No worries I appreciate the reply, I was able to get catalina loaded and was doing the dosdude "undoer" so my graphics weren't laggy, for some reason i got an error when trying to copy over the open GL files, slowly I started losing access to finder etc... basically had to reboot (I know it says not to) for awhile I was atleast able to get my imac to load to an apple logo but now I have a blank screen entirely after resetting pram, I can't access a boot picker or anything to load another OS from my USB, is my imac toast?
Could be a non standard apple Keyboard? See if just holding the letter T brings up the target disk mode screen. Also check for a capslock light

I have issues with the keyboard but for some reason I was just getting a blank screen, time after time, finally after many restarts I was able to get an actual picture and select my high sierra install. Going back to High Sierra, maybe down the road I'll give catalina a shot, no idea why my picture was blank, Thank you so much for the replies.

During my ROM tests, and after doing several hundred flashes, I noticed that the EEPROM chip began failing and was producing random errors in verification. My only option was to replace it. It turns out, that the 8-contact WSON package is sized to match the footprint of the 8-lead SOIC, with contacts in the same physical locations and the same signal-to-pin assignments.

The WSON EEPROM chip used in the higher version Quadro- cards like the K3100M/K4100M is a:
Macronix / MX25L2006EZNI-12G
1594612377549.png

I therefore purchased a SOIC-8 equivalent from DigiKey.com.
Macronix / MX25L2006EM1I-12G, PART#: 1092-1112-ND

I have experience with small component soldering and I used a hot-air station and a microscope at 7x to accomplish this. You have to apply lots of heat to free up the central solder pad as it anchors the chip down firmly. Be aware that you can easily lift a trace and destroy the video card if you aren’t patient. Also note, there are about 9 resistors/capacitors that are near the perimeter of the chip and can easily be disrupted if you don’t have the right tools. I used extremely fine tipped long forceps to guide my removal.

caution: This is not for the amateur. I am not responsible for damage that you may incur attempting this. This is just meant to add to our knowledge base about these video cards.

2. Comparison of new chip that will go in its place:

3. Kapton tape to prevent heat from destroying nearby components:

4. New SOIC-8 in place:
IMG_6130.JPG

5. Functional:
K3100M revival.png

I can now clip-rescue the chip if I brick it with my sometimes overly ambitious expectations. I figure I have ~300 cycles to get it right before I have to do it again!

Cheers!

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone on here who has contributed to this thread.
You have given a huge new lease of life to my ageing iMac!
And spurred me on to join this great forum and become a contributor not just a lurker!
Starting out with a base model 2010 21.5" with an i3 and a HD4670 I'm now running an i7860s a K2100M and a shiny new SSD. (I thought while it's apart why the hell not?!)
I've gone from a Valley Benchmark score of 237 with a lowly 5.7 FPS to a score of 1219 and 29.1 FPS!
It now outperforms my 2015 MacBook Pro and should certainly see it survive as the centre of my recording studio setup for another few years yet.
A complete transformation of the machine for little over £100 outlay and around 3 hours of my time.
Special thanks to Nick for your ROM without which it would not have been possible.
Anyway enough of that, just wanted to say I can 100% confirm that HP versions of the K2100M work when flashed (I purchased off eBay and didn't realise the Dell version is the one more usually sourced)
I flashed it with a CH341A before I installed it so I cannot confirm if it will boot before flashing like the Dell versions.
Secondly for anyone looking to do this upgrade seriously consider upgrading your CPU at the same time while it's all apart. I picked up a quad core i7 for less than £30 and it added maybe 10 mins to the job.
I have some experience taking apart computer based electronics but this was the first time for me dismantling an iMac but following the ifixit guide made things easy to follow.
I first cloned my HDD onto a new SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner, confirmed it would boot with a USB caddy then started dismantling.
I used 4x 10mm M2 screws to attach the GPU to the heatsink to save drilling the mounts and the only slight issue I had was when booting up I initially had no power.
I took the display back off so I could see the diagnostic LEDs, confirmed I had power but no response when pressing the power button on the back. A quick spray with some contact cleaner and all was good it booted straight up!

dears,

i just installed a GTX780m with the vbios modified but when i start the mac i only get 2 leds on the motherboard and blackscreen + reboot each 20-30sec.
can you help please?

I would like to, but this is "it does not work" message makes me tired all the time.

Can you give us more specific information about hardware, software, BIOS version used? This sounds like a badly installed card, a dead card or a missing single PRAM reset after GPU swap. Do you get the boot picker on pressing alt/option on boot.

Did you modify the heat sink to make the card sit flush and flat on the sink?

NVIDIA QUADRO K1100m 2GB installed and patched.
iMac mid 2011 21.5-inch

Catalina installed 10.15.4

I get kernel panics every time when I try to login iCloud.
Finally login goes ok.

Also I have black screen every time when I reboot, but I think I need to install kexts?

Why asking this question when you already found the answer?
Regarding the kernel panic I cannot help right now. But if you go back to the first page and first post you will find the "sleep issue" known to happen with 2011 models using Mojave or Catalina. This is the only situation where I can push my systems into a kernel panic. Apply these extensions, too - if not done before.

you're right.

i use Imac 27 2011 + GTX 780m with the lastest vbios provided by Nick DVB.
i am familiar with the dismantling of my imac and i think i did it well.
i hope the card is still working...

PRAM reset (command-option-p-r) didnt resolved the case... :(

The most important part is still the installation of the card on the sink avoiding any kind of short and having the GPU in perfect contact to the copper part. I had this with nearly every card I touched, lately with a stock ATI 6750M in a MXM-B sink. I had to use an additional 0.5mm copper plate between GPU and sink to avoid shorts of bigger caps and perfect heat transfer of a small card only using 30W.

Getting a reboot after 2/3 of the boot when the graphics will be initialised means often a bad card. Reboot without even reaching this means probably overheating of the GPU (you can check this yourself installing the card just hanging in the slot, but it may boil the card to death, too). Grinding away the upper part as shown on the pictures attached is necessary, not an option.

Hi I believed you purchased on eBay. I probably bought from the same seller as yours but how do I get it to work? Tested on iMac 27” 2011 but keeps rebooting. No display just chime. I purchased 4 cards but all with the same problem.

On a whim a few weeks ago I ordered a K610m from eBay for around $9. Had a chance to play around with it this weekend, and here is what I found.

Original P/N on card was 785225-001. The original BIOS showed NOTHING. No version info, no UEFI info, nothing. View attachment 908152

Flashed it with the only other BIOS I could find listed here : https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/212790/212790
I did this with the Linux SSH tool listed in the WIKI. There was no internal or external display working originally.

View attachment 908153

After flashing and rebooting it immediately worked in High Sierra. Both internal and external.

No Alt Key boot menu and No Brightness control, but secondary boot menus worked as well. Installed Windows 10 and bootcamp drivers, let Windows Update install the video card drivers. Internal video works fully on BootCamp, all the way from the Press any key to boot to this CD text through every part of setup. External video also works on Bootcamp. Oddly, after loading the video driver, even native backlight control works in Windows 10, you can drag the slider all the way down and the screen will go completely dark at the end, just like a supported card in MacOS. It's definitely native, the upper left corner of the rear display is cool to the touch with the brightness turned down and burning hot in MacOS with no way to turn it down.

Here's a few more pictures during the process, including some benchmark scores.

I also noticed several weird things when trying all the different versions of MacOS. High Sierra booted normally as long as no external screen was attached (even powered off caused issues). Below is a picture of the scrambled video if booted with an external screen attached. If you disconnected the external display cable, the internal LCD video fixed itself and you could proceed normally, without a reboot.

View attachment 908171

Also, several versions of MacOS Mojave and Catalina did not boot with video support on either internal or external. Here is the chart so far, it's obviously a work in progress. Also note this was only when booting from a USB installer, ALL of the versions I tried of a full MacOS worked with internal and external with no corruption, ever.

Hi, can someone help me about this kernel panic please ?
iMac 27 2011 quadro k610m brand new flashed with nickey bios
fresh install Catalina, same problem on Mojave and high Sierra.
blue glitches on screen, total freeze and reboot
safe mode started, glitches too but not all the time, system is exploitable, little freezes but no reboot
I tried to remount original ati card but I have the same problems
k610m is brand new, and I had no problems at all with stock card, just wanna upgrade it to install Catalina...

If using dosdudes Mojave or Catalina Patcher, use for your machine recommended
patch functions, but disable "Legacy Graphics Driver / Support" on second boot
from USB...

Well as i can see on this thread k610m card is compatible with imac 27" and the good bios were flashed on..
I didn't select legacy graphic driver on my first install of catalina, after i select it to see if my problems gone away but not...
Remounting original card and boot on high sierra usb key, i directy have artefacts on install welcome screen.
Didn't have any glitching or artefacts on boot menus like disk editor or internet recovery, only when installed system boots... Or usb key booting install..
I had Remount k610m. Same problems and No solutions at all. Strange...

The most important part is still the installation of the card on the sink avoiding any kind of short and having the GPU in perfect contact to the copper part. I had this with nearly every card I touched, lately with a stock ATI 6750M in a MXM-B sink.

It would be wise to read carefully through the first post and make sure you installed the additional kexts that are necessary for these new cards. Otherwise, Ausdersportler will have some stern words for you.

Good luck!

Hi everybody! Hope you're all doing well!

I have gone through this thread over the pas few months in preparation to upgrade/install a new GPU to replace my dead AMD card in my 27" imac 2011. I decided to go for the wx7100 and it has arrived and I have flashed the BIOS with the AMD GOP driver.
Then I installed catalina using dosdude1's tool and that also went pretty smoothly.
So far so good, at this point I was getting display with a secondary monitor connected but not without, so I went and got the open core loader and installed it to an SD card, it seems to be working as I now have display on my internal monitor and *some* brightness control, which I have read seems to be normal.

However I have run into some other issues with installing the kexts, I downloaded and unzipped the kext files from @Highvoltage12's post and replaced the file for AMD GPUs in the folder. then I dragged them to the desktop (without lilo and whatevergreen since I am using OpenCore) and launched the kext utility. When it looked like it was done doing things, I dragged the kext files into the window and I'm not sure if it gave me an error, but I realized I hadn't done the gatekeeper unlock.
So I closed everything, moved the kext files back to the folder, ran the gatekeeper unlock with hackintool, and then launched the kext utility again and then dragged the files into it. This time it came up with the result pictured in Highvoltage12's post. So I figured Great! Succes! I rebooted the computer and then tried putting it to sleep...well that's where I realized I must have done something wrong, because it won't wake up after I let it get to sleep. If I shake the mouse a few seconds after the screen dims it will come back up, but if I let it for more than 15-20 seconds, it doesn't wake up, and then presents me with the OpenCore boot selector screen, and that errors out and freezes. At that point I have to hold the power button and do a cold boot.

I do seem to have successfully enabled quicksync though, if tha helps at all.

So what have I done wrong? I'm pretty sure it's something dumb, I'm not a pro with macs at all, more of a PC guy honestly, but I wanted to bring this thing back to life. Anyway, if anybody has some insights that would be great, sorry for the novel :p

Thanks

We published a guide about using the catalina loader. read it, reinstall catalina and install the extensions step by step using the guide and @highvoltage12v extensions. You will find the guide...

Strange...
Just a recap:

- before the change the original ATI card and the complete system worked well.
- after change to K610M you have glitches and problems
- swishing back to the ATI and you have the same glitches and problems

Probably a different hardware problem (not the cards) you created during the first GPU swap? Check memory and cables seating and card seating in the MXM slot...you see me a little bit out of options. Whenever I have glitches with a card it turned out that some hardware piece was dead.

You are sure to have a clean install of both cards on the sink?

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I found what I missed, I had exracted the config.plist for the AMD cards before booting with catalinaloader, but I had not modified them using the configurator, I guess that's why I got internal display but some other things aren't working...I knew something was up, I kept seeing references to the configurator, but when I opened it it was empty because I hadn't loaded a file.

Do I really have to completely reinstall though?

Hi I believed you purchased on eBay. I probably bought from the same seller as yours but how do I get it to work? Tested on iMac 27” 2011 but keeps rebooting. No display just chime. I purchased 4 cards but all with the same problem.
Having four cards and all are not working - I bet there is another problem with your "black screen" issue you can solve after reading the first post and the first page, again.

How could one figure out remotely in what step you missed what extension to install or command to apply? And when you tell me that you have enabled QuickSync (the Intel iGPU H.264) in a system with an AMD card you must read a lot before even trying the reinstall....

Of course: If you had created a snapshot before touching the system with patches or patched extensions you could simply go back to this snapshot. But I bet nobody is doing this here.

haha, I bet you're right about the snapshots! Thanks for the help, I realize that it is difficult to debug things remotely over a forum, that's probably why this thread has 300+ pages.

I did the quicksync kext because in the post I was following about the kexts it was suggested to do so, post 3271.
I ran the app that Highvoltage12 suggested (Mac X video recorder) to verify before and after, and before there was no quicksync and after, there was intel/nvidia/amd lit up next to hardware encoder.

So I was missing the sleep checkbox in kernel, and builtin picker mode, with poll apple hotkeys (which would explain why they weren't working)

I saved the config and rebooted, and I get a new boot menu now, on an all whit boot screen, but it seems to be working. I have put the computer to sleep and woken it up successfully. I don't know if you would still recommend reinstalling though.

Thanks again for all your help! :)

Please read the long guide linked on the first page about using the Catalina Loader...you are taking so many short cuts, you will never get the card and the system really running.

So I got 80% through with putting a K2100M into a 2011 21.5" iMac, and found that I have fried my SSD in the process. I did get a nasty shock at one point when I thought I had pulled the power cord but hadn't :(. I tried plugging in an old hard drive but it doesn't seem to be recognized by the Mac or when booted into Linux. Have I killed part of the logic board? I get four LEDs but no backlight (haven't tried again), no hard drive, and fans spin up pretty quickly. I can boot the USB grml Linux image from the guide and see it on a second monitor. Anything I should check before I give up?

Reset your PRAM, hold ALT key at boot (try booting with a Dosdude1 bootable USB).
