Little bit off-topic, but did someting quite different today; don't know wether this is done before.

Bought a 2011 i5 2,7 really cheap, with a defective screen. Initially i hoped th videocard was gone but no.
Tried replacing the backlight board, but no luck either. At first the left side of the screen was rather dark, and eventually all of the screen goes dark. (could see the image with a flashlight tough)

Had a new 2009 screen lying around, with a small scratch on the screen, but offcourse none of the cables will fit to a 2011 iMac. so I opened up the topside of the panels and inside the flatbed connectors are the same, so I switched the circuitboards & cables and yes it worked! i only had overseen de bluetooth connector at the left side, so now I still have to switch a part of the frame. (just unscrew).
Good news, it means we can switch screens between 2009,2010, and 2011 27''.
 
@The_Croupier - I plugged the iMac into a monitor, and have the same artifacts results. Two things I noticed- I did have 3 diagnostic LEDs out of 4. Also, the external monitor boots to black unless I do a PRAM reset, and then I get the checkered login...not sure if that matters. Thanks.
Led 4 is lit when your internal lcd is connected and working so that is normal.

And yes as @herrdude said, and as I suspected, your 780m is defective.

You could try to disassemble clean it up and reapply quality thermal paste or bake it but the card IMO is on the way out.

I followed these steps for installing the RX480 card :


1- Disable SIP (cmd+R , terminal : csrutil disable and reboot)
2 - I created the OLCP on a USB drive and Catalina Loader on an SD card to copy the EFI folder from the USB drive to the Catalina loader SD card.
3 - plug USB key containing the High Sierra installer
4 - plug Catalina Loader SD card
5 - Select "Catalina Loader" as startup disk
6 - swap old GPU card, by the RX480 (already flashed)
7 - Reconnect the internal screen
8 - Start the iMac and select the High Sierra installer
9 - Do a clean install of High Sierra
=> All works very well

But I have a problem with the SIP, it is still enabled and I can not disable it : why ?
I did step 1 again, but when I restart the iMac and check the SIP via the terminal (csrutil status it's enabled!)
As long as everything work, that's of no concern. In fact, the beauty of OCLP is that you can re-enable SIP for intended system security and running FileVault.

But it would be a waste to have RX480 running just HS. The next step is to install Big Sur to another SSD. And make sure on PRAM reset, the default boot device is the HS partition/drive to ease latter troubleshooting if needed.

@herrdude ...bummer...so xanderon usb boot uses the 780M GPU? I assumed it was using the onboard GPU while flashing, and there is artifacts in that single user mode. How is that possible?
You could try booting to linux and disabling the dedicated GPU.
 
Hi can someone help please just installed opencore legacy patcher big sur on IMac mid 2011 everything works good but if I wanna use messenger or what's app or other apps that need camera or microphone access it won't let me do it. The apps don't show up in privacy.

Hey there. Here’s my contribution to the thread.. hopefully lol.

I bought two cards to test out on my iMac, a Quadro K4100M and a FirePro M6100. Both cards work on the iMac albeit with a couple caveats.

The FirePro boots up with no bootscreen, however give it some time, High Sierra eventually boots and we get an image on the screen. Apparently the drivers are already baked in as the card gets detected as “Radeon HD 8xxx”.Haven’t gotten a chance to test in Catalina.

I have the Quadro in another machine with a Catalina install. No bootscreen, and the screen doesn’t turn on at all. However, I was able to remote into the Catalina install and it detects the card as a Quadro. However it doesn’t detect a display. I suspect I have to edit the dcb table, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction for that.

other than that, both cards under windows will not run. Boots into code 43 I think it was. Again I didn’t really go that deep into testing. I’d like to continue to contribute so just tell me what to do and if it’s within my scope I’ll do it.
So a M6100 works "out of the box"? What happened since then?

Edit: So I bought a FirePro M6100 for only 40 USD with 10-Day shipping (is it allowed to write prices down?). The K4100M or K5000M costs around 150 USD, so much cheaper. And the performance should be the same (but with 2GB RAM). "Thanks to the very high clock rates of up to 1,100 MHz for the chip and 1,500 MHz for the memory (6,000 MHz effective, 96 GB/s), the 3D gaming performance is slightly above the Nvidia Quadro K4100M or GeForce GTX 860M." I've always wanted to try a 21.5" (09/10) LVDS cable to test this on a 27" 2009-2010 lcd to 2011 logic board without any disassembly or swapping boards.
Don't know if it would be long enough though.

For AMD GPUs, it is better to have the OCLP on an SD card for easier trouble-shooting and update of the OCLP.
ALWAYS keep a HS partition on your default boot drive, i.e. the first partition on your drive that your iMac will boot on default upon PRAM reset. If there is anything wrong with the new OS, you can always boot back to HS (natively supported) to work for a solution without a black screen.

Just use a dummy active connector for the external mini-Display port. I use this:
But any active display adapter should work to trigger the internal LCD display on booting.

Can I use Dosdude1's macOS Catalina Patcher to upgrade to Catalina and then, use Patched Sur to upgrade to Big Sur? I know it would be terrible because of the fact that Accelerated Graphics will be disabled, but can I upgrade to a Metal GPU for the iMac 2009 to fix that and hopefully get Big Sur? And lastly, the most important question:

What Graphics Card, compatible with this iMac would be compatible? But even more important, which would have no boot screen issues, brightness issues and would be as cheap as possible?

Read the first post on the first page of this thread and please do not shoot the messenger - your system is currently not really supported. Using another board with an i7 will work, not sure if it will be cheaper to start with a gpu dead i7 model.

Edit:
Since we have OLCP no one here needs to use any longer @dosdude1 or Patched Sur after the metal upgrade. Using OCLP makes these (under the hood of OpenCore) undistinguable from a fully supported system. You will find the update options with OCLP on the first post, too.

Next time make some more pictures and describe the process, this is a real nice finding! Would love to add it to the first post.

Just ordered the cheapest upgrade I could find for my Late 2011 21.5" - a K610M from Aliexpress 'imac version'... let's see what turns up :) Not too fussed about ultimate performance, just want something a bit more responsive than the 256MB HD6750 so I can run Catalina or Big Sur. Looking forward in a strange way to some blind BIOS flashing haha

Not that blind. You will use SSH from another computer.

Hi guys... I have been using Patched Sur since 11.0.1 until now (Im in 11.2.3) in my mid 2011 27inch imac with NVIDIA K3100M, but I will now dive into the OCLP greatness. 2 Things drove me this path; OTA and Security. I am now building the bootable installer. Wish me luck brothers!

As I tried to run OCLP Patcher 0.1.0 in Terminal, I encountered this error when building the Opencore EFI from option 1:

My iMac 2010 is running Catalina 11.5.7 unpatched.
Just want to share my own experience with OCLP that converted my dosdude patch to OCLP.
I hit this exact same error when preparing the USB stick for the actual iMac12,2 on my PC hackintosh.
In the end, I went to the actual iMac12,2 running Catalina using dosdude's patch to run OCLP Patcher to build the Opencore. It went through without any error. I was able to get the EFI part installed nicely to the USB stick (with Big Sur). I then boot up my iMac12,2 with the USB stick to install Big Sur without any problem.
No black screen, no nothing.
All went well.

OCLP has included a hardware detection. It assumes to run on native Apple legacy hardware. If you fool the app on an hackintosh or sometimes even on a real Apple system using OpenCore (and hiding it’s real nature) this detection can fail. Using the CLI or setting all parameters according to the target hardware should always work, i.e. you can run it on an iMac11,1 to generate a iMac12,2 configuration and vice versa.

La carte est fonctionnelle!
J'ai acheté une carte graphique K4100 pour la mise à niveau, normalement cette carte devrait fonctionner.
Mon problème est, que j'ai un écran noir lorsque je l'allume et qu'il reste noir. Les ventilateurs fonctionnent mais je n'ai aucun son au démarrage et aucune combinaison de touches ne fonctionne.
Avez-vous une idée de mon problème?
