Why not just use HDMI and keep your TB port free?

Or a Mini-display to DVI adapter if you must use the TB port.

I think there's been some issues driving the U2711 at 2560x1440 using hdmi.

Any reason to not just use a standard display port cable (mini-DP to DP) since the U2711 has DP?

If the new Mini doesn't get Sandy Bridge, the "Don't Buy" label should be permanently applied to it in the buyers guide.

He's correct, HDMI can't display all the pixels at the U2711 native resolution. At least the versions of HDMI on Macs and probably on the Dell HDMI input.

Which means there's no sense updating it to a more expensive processor and more RAM and all the other spec increases you guys are claiming it will have.

If you can get away with selling the C2D version with 2 GB RAM and no Thunderbolt for $699, why ruin a good thing?

As for the concerns that C2D processors may not be available at some time in the future, I'm sure Apple knows better than we do when that's going to happen. And remember Intel only said they're no longer marketing C2D, not that they are ending production. It seems likely Apple is going to stick with C2D in the Mini as long as they can get away with it.

the thing is, the C2D's willnrequire a compatible on-board graphics solution and will need to remain at a competitive price if they are to be used for another 12 months. Production of them will wind down and the i3 and i5 chips will cost less. They also will not require Apple to keep buying on board graphics from nVidia. Throw in the fact that Apple can buy in bulk for the 13" MB Pro, the Macbook and the Mini and it's a safe bet that both the MB and Mini will be refreshed before the end of the year.

My guess would be Septembr / October for both of them, so Apple can shift their remaining MB and Mini models in a back to school promotion.

sigh... I forgot about the Back to School promotions. There goes my hopes of a June Mac Mini update :(

Mini hasn't been included in back to school promos in the past (based on the quick google search I just did). Have you seen something about apple changing that this year?

yeah, as danielsmu said, the Mac Mini has never been included in the back to school promotion, probably because it doesn't make Apple enough money to warrant it.

I'll sleep better now..thanks, it makes sense maybe it's not as much about the money as it is that students these days all seem to need/want portables (can't blame them)

True. My uni got rid of all the desktop PC's in the open access areas and made them all 'wifi zones' instead because you could literally count on one hand then number of students in the university that hadn't got laptops, however, the B2S promo does include the iMac and Mac Pro so still think it's about the money :)

I have a few quick thoughts:

1. The only reason I am interested in a Mac Mini is because Apple's iMacs have glossy screens and after having owned a 24" iMac for 3 years, my eyes are having MASSIVE issues. I noticed it right away when I first used this computer. I had previously had the first Intel 15" MacBook Pro (matte screen) and never had a problem.

It is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that they are using these glossy/glare screens. This is nothing new.

2. I am angry that I won't be able to have well-performing graphics (the Mac Mini refresh will most likely be the Intel HD 3000 graphics chipset, which is garbage as Intel graphics always have been).

3. Having now been a Mac user since early 2006, I am going to look into Windows again. Apple, you have royally pissed me off with your need to control everything and tell everyone what the best way is, even when it's not. It's a shame, because I greatly prefer Mac OS X to Windows, but I greatly value my eyesight over anything else.

I look at Apple's glossy-only screen option as a PERSONAL ATTACK on my health.

Either way, I hope this next Mac Mini refresh comes sooner than later, as I have a brand new MATTE monitor waiting for a source.

Whoa take it easy there! I do agree with your points that Apple should offer a matte screen option, that the HD3000 is a bit of a bore, and that the Mac Mini refresh should come fast. But yeah, a PERSONAL ATTACK on your health? That seems a bit overreacting.

You're right. It's obviously nothing personal, but that's how I feel, haha.

Just frustrated at my options:

- Mac Pro: Way too expensive, form factor is too large.
- Mac mini: Underpowered, not refreshed yet.
- Windows/PC: No Mac OS X.

So, I don't know. Thanks for all the info in this thread.

Many, if not most, academics programs "require" a laptop or a portable (such as iPad) these days. Back when I was in college, my requirements as a Freshman in Fall 1997 for just a desktop all of the sudden changed to a laptop when I was a Junior or Senior in 2000 or 2001. That was a pain to all of the sudden have to find money for another computer so soon, but it sure was cool to be able to use the limited Wi-Fi on the drill field and engineering buildings when all of the other students envied us. Yeah, the Wi-Fi cards at the time were school issued, so it was pretty much limited to engineering students at the time.

These days, computer labs aren't necessary due to the laptop academic "requirements." It was definitely smart on the colleges to implement it.

A5 with iOS....

Sort of a larger AppleTV with extra memory....

And kill off it's use as proper computer, no thanks. If that happens I don't know where i'd go. I hate glossy iMac screens and MacPro is far too much of a beast for me.

I suppose the only alternative would be a Macbook, but that's a dumb option for a desktop environment.

Refurbished 2010 Mac minis now available on the apple store again. Let the clearing out stock rumors begin...err...continue...

This is nuts. Why are people suggesting Apple remove the optical drive? One of the biggest reasons to remove the optical drive is to conserve room, mainly for portable devices like netbooks. That is, they drop them to make the device smaller and more portable. Furthermore, Apple markets the Mac Mini as something you can hook up to the HDTV. If they removed the optical drive, this would eliminate people's ability to watch DVDs on their HDTV via the Mac Mini.

The mini already has the ODD removed, it's called the mini Server...

As long as they give us the choice, I'm happy.

[DEATH to the ODD on notebooks though!:D]

I ended up buying a Mac Pro for the exact reasons you've mentioned -

1. All in one iMac form factor sucks, *Screen GLARE*
2. Mac Mini - Not powerful enough for the way I use my machine
3. I'll admit, Windows 7 is good, but OS X has a UNIX foundation, no registry, and you don't have to worry about catching spyware by just accessing the wrong website.

I'll add 4. I'm used to a traditional PC "desktop" form factor, and having multiple internal drives. All 4 slots have at least 1TB drives to hold my stuff from over the years, and so far, I'm not willing to give that up :)

Back on topic, I'd really like to see the Minis update pretty soon, as I'm trying to switch my dad to a Mac, and he doesn't believe in buying expensive computers, so it's Mac Mini, or back to Windows...

And he finds the price point of the Mac Mini fine? I mean things will be better after the refresh, but you'll still be paying a premium for the hardware just because it's from Apple.

At the last update I was hoping the mini would grow taller instead of thinner. Give it room for the optical drive and two hard drives. In fact add enough to the height so that some jacks and ports can be on the front. I won't buy an iMac and can't afford the Mac Pro. If the mini would grow just a little in size and features it would be perfect. If Apple neuters it even worse than it already is I don't know what I'll do.

They should just come out with the same hardware that is in the new iMac with CPUs up to 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 and AMD GPUs up to 2GB 6970 but with USB 3.0 ports along with one Thunderbolt port. I paid $99 for a 2TB Seagate ext USB 3.0 HDD back in Dec and it will be a long time before Thunderbolt ext HDD get to that price level so replace the USB 2.0 ports that are on the current Mini to 3.0 that also work with 2.0 devices.
