Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but the Mac mini is now listed as "Backordered" on Best Buy's website.

Any day now...

It's been listed as backordered for a few weeks.

Actually some possibly bad news: yesterday only two of the 30 BB stores within 150 miles of me that had the mini in stock. Today there are 11 listing it as in stock.

Oddly enough, I just put one in my cart for a store that didn't have it in stock, and they said it would arrive by 7/23, which is the same date it gave for arrival when I did the same thing back at the beginning of July. I wonder if that date has some significance.

Well another red letter day has come and gone and that's another rumour well and truly scotched i.e. no release of OS X Lion, no upgraded MacBook and no upgraded Mac Mini. :(

A couple of very large UK tech retailers have now removed the listings for the Mac Mini whereas previously they were simply showing as out of stock. Not very encouraging.

That would explain this post on applebitch.com then, give or take a few days.

That could just mean they know they're not getting any more 2010 minis from Apple to sell. They would have to take that listing down when/if they start selling 2011 minis anyway.

The Apple online store is currently down! Is it just for a maintenance?

I just logged in to the web store and it was up as usual. Are you referring to the app store?

Can't believe it, most UK retailers are now showing the Mini as back in stock for immediate delivery as of today.

I never joke about serious topics like computer purchases.

To add to Lankyman's observation, the number of Best Buys within 150 miles of me with the mini in stock just went up to 12 (from 3 on Wednesday).

The big box stores around here (including Best Buy) continue to have the old models -- at full price -- for the first few weeks after a new model is released. I wouldn't put too much stock in what they do and don't have in stock. ;)

Was there any shortage for the late 2009 and 2010 updates? I vaguely remember them just coming out of nowhere.

Admittedly not a great sign if Lion is released this week. But it'll more telling when Lion is actually released.

If all other Macs yet to be updated get them to ship with Lion, but not the Minis, then it strongly suggests Apple do indeed have a significant stockpile of C2Ds & will try to squeeze maximum profit from current Minis until those run out. For me, that'll be the green light to buy a refurb.

For now though, I remain hopeful of a Mini update to coincide with Lion towards end of this month.

There's no reason they couldn't just install Lion on the 2010 minis before shipping them. Well, unless they don't want to ship a computer with the minimum amount of RAM to run its OS. Another possibility is that they would upgrade the minis to 4GB before shipping with Lion.

I should have been clearer as that's more or less what I meant. If all other Macs yet to be updated (eg. MBA) get updates to coincide with Lion's release, but not the Mini, then presumably they'll ship Lion with current Minis for as long as it takes for the C2Ds to run out.

If that happens, then upping the RAM is the least they can do, though I suspect that won't be nearly enough for those in the know about the relative value of a much faster processor.

Yeah, I don't think they care much about knowledgeable users; that's not their market. But they wouldn't want a novice user to unpack a mini from the box, hook it up, and then get beach balls every time they try to run Safari and iTunes at the same time, which I suspect would be likely with minimum RAM.

Well I predict it will either rain or go dark before morning and I think this prediction will be a lot nearer the mark than many of the others we have heard of late regarding a Mini update.

I agree that a lot of the "reliable sources" the rumor sites claim to have now have serious egg on their face. However, there are a few facts that I trust are indisputable:

1. Lion is coming out in July
2. Apple doesn't want to ship new computers with Snow Leopard for long after Lion is released
3. The current mini with Lion pre-installed and no RAM upgrade will produce a terrible out-of-box experience
4. Apple does not want to be associated with terrible out-of-box experiences

Taking these into account, there are only three possibilities for the mini's future:

1. It will be completely refreshed with i3 and more RAM etc, after the release of Lion
2. It will be discontinued after the release of Lion
3. It will get a minor spec bump without a real refresh (eg upgrading the RAM to 4 GB out of the box) soon after Lion Day, and will be either fully refreshed or discontinued when they run out of C2D's at the end of 2011.

To my mind, #2 makes no sense given what we know; if they were going to discontinue it it would make sense for them to announce this long beforehand so that people would buy up existing stock.

Also given that the leaked TB Cinema Display images (from Apple's site) show the monitor hooked up to several different machines, including a Mac Mini...it seems uncharacteristic that Apple would depict a new product alongside a discontinued one. Has that happened before?

What keeps making people believe that lion is coming out in July lol? Apple announced it would be released in the fall. To my understanding July is part of the summer and I don't think apple is going to release it the minute it turns fall. As I said before, lion will be released middle/late august and the Mac mini will probably be released around November.
