o if you have any apple computer with a newer version of osx then you can use that to download a newer version of osx from there you can go around upgrading your imac OS if you want to try to do it for free. (like your macmin if it's ruining a newer version of osx you can use it to download a version of osx)

i have relay mixed feelings about the external SSD once your spending £200 thats close to 20% of a new imac

for instructions on ram upgrade look here
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2428+RAM+Replacement/5660
nice photos and looks like a simple upgrade (think thats your imac mid 2011)
on ebay you can get ram for you imac fairly cheep, i think you have two 4 gb sticks of ram with 2 free slots (no 100% on that) i see two 2GB sticks for £20 or two 4GB sticks for around £40

thats the cheapest and id gess best/easy upgrade but as your a light user id relay suspect that your better off just upgrading the OS and seeing how things are, skip on upgrades and put the money to the side for when you need to replace the imac.
with osx10.8+ your will have more software to use and maybe even better browser support.
(but some old software may stop working)

one of the nice things about osx is apple dose make it vary simple to update the OS, so it's not a big thing.

Well I did the upgrade...to the 27" iMac. Man this thing is awesome! An added plus is that I think I'm going to try to update the 21" myself. How bad can I screw it up, right?

Don't answer that. LOL.

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate the guidance.

well im happy you where able to upgrade ^^, as almost any upgrade past ram looks potentially a tad complex and expensive.
if you can do upgrade the ram, it will make a difference even to light users to have more than 8GB :D 16GB is good to aim for.

well if you want to do any upgrades look at the ifixit.com guides and as it's your old computer do check ebay for used parts.

How did you perform the upgrade? Did you first upgrade to 10.8 and then to High Sierra?

I "upgraded" from the 21" to the 27". LOL. It was certainly a more expensive upgrade than I was expecting but man this thing is awesome! So fast and more real estate for a display than I can fit on my acre of land.

Oh, you got a new one. Brand new? What is the configuration? Inquiring minds want to know!

Super happy with my purchase right now. Even with 8 gigs of RAM it really scoots along. And the drive is very very fast. I’m just starting to explore the thing.

Satisfied customer so far.

^^ happy that your happy have fun

o if you want use the new imac to download osx10.13, install it on to a usb stick, put the installer on the usb stick, put the usb stick in your old imac and boot from it, then instal osx10.13 on your old imac.

warning if you do back up all your data as it may wipe your old imac
