No, summer 2011 is the time to buy the new iPhone. Duh.

Been waiting a whole year to get a new laptop. The new MBA is just the excuse I needed.

I have the money, have no use for an iPod touch and will just download Lion and try it out before I decide if I want to buy it or not.

Besides I always by the family pack of OS updates (got plenty of macs in my household).

Mac to ppc
ppc to intel
os9 to OS X
Phone to high speed Ethernet
Ethernet to wifi

These are big changes as it meant the old would be obsolete. Next year will see usb3 and FireWire improvements. Think that's it for revolution.

Intel's Sandy Bridge CPUs should be available starting next year (not sure exactly when, but next summer for new Sandy Bridge Macs seems about right). Sandy Bridge will be a pretty nice upgrade for the portable Macs, it will likely mean the end to the Core 2 Duo-based MacBooks and Mac minis. Not sure what Apple will do about Intel's integrated graphics, it will still be a roadblock to leaving the Core 2 Duo architecture and the third-party chip sets (i.e. NVIDIA) but I suspect that Sandy Bridge will represent too much of an advantage for Apple to continue with the Core 2 Duo designs.

Thus, I think the only good reason to wait until next summer is the likely availability of the new Sandy Bridge CPUs (for MacBooks and Mac minis).

Thoughts?

There always are many excellent reasons to wait. Better technology is always just around the corner.

There's really only one good reason to buy now: You could be dead tomorrow.

If money was even an issue here, I wouldn't be buying a MBA right now anyhow. As stated before, and pretty much common sense, if your waiting for the "next big thing" you will always be waiting, technology moves way to fast to sit around and think when you buy something in 6 months it will be the "best" for another year. The MBA will shine for a few months and then everyone will be waiting for the next gen model.

I upgrade pretty much every year. I obviously don't buy near the end of a cycle as Apple has been fairly predictable when they update machines aside from the MBA which has been way overdue. None the less holding off for 7 or 8 months in hopes to save 130 bucks has zero meaning and brings no value to me. The amount of time saved and money earned from having a great laptop for work now will make me many times over the 130 bucks down the road.

Time and productivity = money in my world. I'll take the tech that makes my life easier, and gets the job done faster.

Plus if 130 is an issue, maybe buying a 1200+ laptop isn't' the wisest idea in the first place.

+1!

Sandy Bridge is the real reason I'd wait till the Summer of 2011, unless you *need* a laptop right now. Core2Duo ULV to Sandy Bridge LV or ULV will be a ~2x jump in performance.

And hopefully we'll also see the return of the Backlit Keyboard. :D

Sandy Bridge's IGP should be at least as good as the 9400m, and probably better - and hopefully good enough that Apple can ditch Core2Duo (which will be 7+ Months into EOL territoy by July) and have all the MacBooks (Air/Pro/White) into Core iX processors by WWDC! (Especially with Lion Coming around that time too!)

When it comes to buying MBA, I think it is best to wait. Thoughts?

Stunning logic, you should be a consultant.

"Yes, I recommend you wait 9 months when more advanced technology will be available."

"But in 9 months, wont there be more advanced technology 9 months after that?"

"Yes."

"What will you recommend I do in 9 months?"

"I will recommend you wait another 9 months."

Brilliant.

Why would we want to downgrade our GPU's performance and lose out on OpenCL and VDA that are only supported on the nVidia parts ?

Especially seeing how the current Core i3 fares against the Core 2 Duo parts.

I would never buy a Mac with Intel graphics. It's what kept me off the platform for years.

I can already feel the laser beams are going to come at me from early buyers.
This is not a laser beam, but rather simply my take on the topic.

There is _never_ a perfect, nor predictable time to buy. Ever.

I have purchased far too many computers. I speak from first hand experience. There are simply too many variables that have nothing to do with what is being offered now or in the future.

Let's remember that it's the people that are using the machines and not the other way around. Thus it's all a matter of what you need, when you need it.

As simple as that.

To live your life around waiting , hoping, wondering.. what's coming up and when is pure lunacy.

Just buy the bloody computer when you need it and use it. It's a tool, not a fashion accessory to be seen with.

I love how everyone is reminding me about there will be something new around the corner. That was not the point. I said wait because apple updates software every 2-3 years. Upgrading software costs 129 dollars and this always has been the case except sl. iPod touch, new os, i3 processor upgrade might be worthwhile to wait. Fine enjoy ur purchases.

I don't have a MBA so am not biased here.

Look at the MBA Buyer's Guide. A refresh is definitely not going to happen by summer 2011.

Snow Leopard was cheap. Very cheap. It will be more like $40 or so for Lion, Apple OS updates are nowhere near as expensive as Windows.

And for the iPod Touch deal, yes you can save some money by getting a free iPod, but it's ages away. Hardly worth it.

IIRC 10.5 was something like a $129 upgrade. SL pricing was an anomaly.

I'm buying now (or very soon). Selling my current model MBP 13".
In 7 months, I'll probably be lusting and obsessing after the new MBP and be selling the MBA. Or updating the iPad. And then there's the iPhone in July.
I'm not rich. By selling before the current model gets old you get most of your mony back

Not everyone is a student. There will always, ALWAYS be something around the corner.

Once you join the waiting game, you will always be part of it.

I agree Hellhammer and by the way I LOVE your name! I am gonna name my next WoW characer Hellhammer, it just rolls nicely :)

Also OP, these discounts of which you speak are complete and utter BS for adults who don't have kids, or know kids or aren't students.

It's a nice warning FOR students, but as for adults, for the most part we can afford to buy our toys now and any upgrades as they come.

Indicating that people are foolish for buying things isn't applicable to everyone.

I will just buy another Mac right before the announcement and get lion for $10 :)
