I found one available on ebay in the US:

Look at post #36 in this thread for three options. The ebay listing expired but was relisted here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/18AWG-Dual...Splitter-Power-cable-for-Mac-Pro/153027951416

Thank you - yes I saw this cable but delivery is several weeks from China. I was looking for something in the US a bit sooner than mid August delivery and found this one which despite the confusing description of "MALE HOUSING W/ FEMALE CONTACTS : seems to be the correct cable.

I ordered one from Aliexpress.com

Thank you - I did check all the previous links but those availablel seem to be in China with a month+ delivery. Looking for quicker delivery and found one ultimately with a very confusing description but I think it's the right one:

"2 x male mini PCI-E 6 PIN combine to 1 x male PCI-E 8 pin -15"

This question keeps coming up, over and over.
Order the one from China (when I got mine it was about £12, so bought 2).
Came in just over a week, despite the 3-4 week estimate.....:)

If you find another one in the meantime closer to home then you will have a spare.

Re the Sapphire RX580 cards, has anyone tried the Sapphire Nitro+ RX580??
Power inputs on this card is both 6 and 8 connectors, with a note that using the 6 is optional.

Quite a few using the Nitro+, and yes the 6pin is optional, you can simply use power the 8pin and use the card like the PULSE (except it will block slot 2).

One further question, will any RX580 do the job?
In other words, why the Sapphire, is it just the build quality?

I don’t know but I don’t think so. Any non reference RX580 may not work. It’s been like that for many years, e.g. single slot variant usually not work, or XFX HD7950 often not working on cMP (despite HD7950 has Mac Edition card).

We suggest Sapphire PULSE is becasue that’s the Apple recommended card, and it’s been used in the Apple eGPU developer kit. So, 100% supported.

Great, thanks again.

MINI vs FULL SIZE 6-pin power connectors?

I'm also looking to do this install. I ordered the RX 580 Pulse (in stock at Amazon for $299), now I'm looking to order the right power cable. I've seen all the comments above about the **mini** 6-pin cables being the correct ones rather than the full-size 6-pin connector. That said, when I open up my MP 5,1 case (picture below), I'm pretty darn sure the GPU power cables are full-size 6-pin, not the mini ones.

(The GPU in the pictures is my current Radeon 7950, with 6-pin to 8-pin adapters on both of the two power cables.)

Am I crazy?

The 7950 has two power connectors on it. The RX580 only has one 8-pin connector. You need both of the mini-6 pin connectors on the mainboard to provide sufficient power to the card. As such, what you need is a single cable with dual mini-6-pin male connectors on one end and one full-size 8-pin male connector on the other. Your existing cable setup will not work.

This is the correct cable (and apparently the only one in stock and shipping in the USA):
https://www.ebay.com/itm/DUAL-MINI-...r-cable-FOR-Mac-Pro-MADE-IN-USA/263827994483?

I spent an afternoon looking for the cable and eventually found this on another post. The guy who makes them is Dr Hung who is a PhD in electronic engineering - he makes the cables as a hobby and will make any cable you want. Super fast shipping to - he is in NJ and I am in Los Angeles and I got the cable in three days.

I can't quite remember if my PULSE RX580 come with a dual normal 6pin female to single 8pin. If yes, then you can use that with your current cables.

But if no, then you will need a new cable anyway. You can buy normal dual 6pin FEMALE to single 8pin (because you already has two mini 6pin to normal 6pin), or dual mini 6pin to single 8pin. It's your choice, but you will need at least one of them to power the card properly.

For info, You CANNOT just connect the 8pin to a single mini 6pin source with your current cable. That will 100% trigger the shutdown protection when the RX580 is under stress.

Many thanks to all for the replies.
If I understand correctly, the male PCIe power sockets *on the motherboard* are 6-pin mini male (it didn't occur to me to look at the motherboard itself! ), so if I was going directly from the motherboard to the RX 580 Pulse then I'd need a dual-mini 6-pin to full-size 8-pin cable.

However, since I (apparently) already have existing mini 6-pin to full-size 6-pin cables on both sockets, I can just use them and attach a dual full-size 6-pin female to 8-pin male cable (which is easily available on Amazon)... I'll have some extra length if cable in my case, but as long as I can figure out where to stuff it, that should work fine to power the RX 580, right?

Thank you!

Yup, exactly right.

Hi all,
Just wanted to circle back on this. My card and 2x 6-pin to 8-pin power cable arrived this past week, and I did the install this morning. Success!

One interesting note:
I use two monitors, both with DVI inputs. The RX580 Pulse has only one DVI output, so I plugged the main monitor into that (which fired right up just fine) then used one of the HDMI outputs on the card (via a cheap Monoprice HDMI->DVI adapter) for the secondary monitor. When I plugged the HDMI cable into one of the Pulse's HDMI outs, the card dropped signal to the main monitor! (I did this twice to make sure it wasn't a coincidence.) I had to reboot the machine, then plugged the secondary monitor into the Pulse's OTHER HDMI out, and then both monitors worked perfectly.

So I guess the card only likes to have screens plugged into certain ports simultaneously?
Anyway, all's well that ends well. I'm up and running and happy.

(P.S.- My card also came with no cables in the box.)

Why is there an "xxx" and not the real name of the card?
Any Ideas? Is this normal behavior?
Because he's running Sierra. The card shows up properly in High Sierra 10.13.6
