I ran on the 8 core D700 MP for many years, and now I'm on a 10 core Vega 64 iMac Pro, both with 64 GB of RAM. The iMac Pro is significantly faster; the GPU is 2-3x faster than the dual D700. I notice it in being able to edit basically anything in real time on FCPX - even 8K RedRaw (in better performance mode) and tons of 4K footage without transcoding. Everything is smooth and super fast. My old MP was fast too, but couldn't handle nearly as many streams or effects at once.

It is much faster.

For ProTools though... I am not sure you'd see much of a difference unless you were running huge projects with tons of tracks.

Here's some info directly from Avid

Seems you may notice a decent increase in performance if you're using heaps of plugins. I'm on a 2015 iMac quad core i7 with 32gb RAM and 1tb SSD it's not very often I run into performance issues. I do run all audio and large sample libraries from external SSDs, but it's not that often I run into trouble with needing more power. Having said that, it does happen occasionally, so I'll be eyeing off the next Mac Pro whenever that's ready.

Pro Tools Expert is a good site for info. They tested out a base model with good results

There is no denying the iMac Pro is an impressive piece of kit however the is a BUT and it's a BIG ONE.

What if something were to go wrong with the iMac Pro with it being completely integrated you could be looking at a considerable amount of down time.

So true. I have (slow) backups but I could at least function if it were to go down. Everything is on external storage, and I make proxies for all video in case I have to edit on the MacBook or Mac Mini in an emergency. Ideally there would be another iMac Pro available.

Same issue with the MP though. That thing was almost kind of like a headless iMac Pro anyway.
