I ordered my 13" MBP the day of WWDC. I went with 16 gigs of RAM and 1 TB SSD. Its a great unit. I could probably get used to using the TB more often, but that is just my laziness to try new things.

I have noticed that if I walk away from the MBP, it goes to sleep after the normal amount of time, but it still uses a massive amount of batteries when in sleep mode, it can burn 100% in a matter of 5 or 6 hours. If I close the lid, it won't use any.

Is this normal for the Kaby Lake processors? I have 2 other MBPs (2011 and a late 2013 with SSD) and they do not exhibit this battery issue.

Thanks,
Don

Is anything other than power adapter plugged into the system when this happens?
Is Power Nap enabled or disabled?
I am guessing you already tried the SMC & PRAM resets?

(I am guessing you have already done this but) have you verified in power settings that the system is set to automatically go to sleep and not just power off the display when on battery? If it can nuke the battery in 5-6 hours, it sounds like the system is not going to sleep at all but rather is just turning off the screen.

This thread would normally be of interest if the MBP was losing say 5-15% overnight regardless of whether the lid was closed vs. open, but because your MBP will consume a full charge in 5-6 hours, and because this only happens when the lid is open, I am not sure how much it applies because it sounds like the system is not going to sleep at all (it seems unlikely that enhanced notifications would consume that much power in such a short time.)

I am not sure I understand anything you said! Haha. My Display was set to turn off at 2min.

I called AppleCare and made the following changes.
1. Enabled Power Nap While on Battery
2. Under System Preferences > Notifications, I turned on Do Not Disturb for "When the display is sleeping"

I will see how it does with these changes and report back!

I get around the same battery life on my machine. Brightness is at 69% (11/16 on the slider).

Ok. First test. Charged to 100% and walked away for two hours. Battery dropped only 2%. Seems like the problem was fixed. Not sure which one of those two options "cured" it, but I am much happier!

Do you have anything plugged into the computer, such as external hard drives, USB-to-ethernet adapters, other USB or Thunderbolt devices?

In power settings, have you verified that the system is set to automatically go to sleep? By this I mean:

With my system, even when on battery the computer is configured to turn the display off after 10 minutes, but it will never go to sleep. (it looks a little different with Sierra as this is El Cap)

The reason I ask is because your battery is draining so fast that it sounds like your computer is NOT going to the classic sleep mode. Rather, it sounds like only the display it turning off or a long period of time elapses between when the display turns off and the system goes to sleep - the MacBook has different 'sleep'/power preserve settings/modes such as: display off (uses most power), sleep, and hibernate.

I did not have anything plugged in at all and typically just Chrome and iMessages open. I made the changes below and so far, all is good!

How has battery life been overall? How many hours do you get on a single charge?

Its still very early to calculate after my adjustments. I will revisit in a week and update you!

New 2017 MBP i7/16g/512g - 4 days in. Migrated from my 2013 MacBook Air. I know I have indexing and other new activities but after one hour or use (Outlook, Word and PowerPoint) my battery shows 91% and 6hrs 20min remaining. I'm hoping I get closer to 9+ hours. Otherwise, I'm happy I updated. Love the screen, the Touch ID and some touch bar functions which will get better with more software integration over time.

if your system is brand new, it will consume more battery till it indexes all data.

on my first day it went from 100 to 85 while sleeping. Now a week old it stays at 100% when sleeping.

i get mixed 5-7 hours of battery life with all my photoshop, web browsing and little video production.

Also remember, if you are a webmaster and have google analytics open all the time, the laptop will consume all battery in a matter of 2-3 hours. so any tabs who refresh automatically consume more battery.

Hi Doth, I've just received a brand new 13" pro, similar to your spec and right away I noticed the poor battery performance. I've changed the settings as you had done so, which seem to help.

However, I'd like to ask you how your battery life is doing after several months of use? My machine is still new and I want to know what I can expect myself. How satisfied are you with your battery drain?
