Just found this good free official gaming benchmarking software (FFXV for Windows).

http://benchmark.finalfantasyxv.com/na/

It's simple, just select High Quality, 3840x2160, Fullscreen, then Start to enjoy some gaming scenes, and wait for the result.

It's a real gaming benchmark, not the artificial one like Unigine Heaven.
It's free, so everyone can run it.
It's simple, not many setting allowed, so, easy to compare.
It's demanding, so, a good test for the iMac

I feel an iMac is a fine gaming machine but only when approached as a secondary function. More for the casual gamer. I’ll play games like Cities Skyline on occasion (until it was released for the PS4) and it did ok.

I used to play Elder Scrolls Online. And that is when I ran into problems. Since ESO is an MMO it’s constantly upgraded including the game engine. They upgraded it to the point of it becoming unplayable or at least to the point where I was losing my competitive edge (wild fps fluctuations and tons of texture pop in). Although I called them to complain, technically I couldn’t do anything short of buying a better Mac. $3000 for medium/high graphics with a new iMac vs $600 (at that time) for a boss ultra graphics 60+ fps video card.

Then you need to consider its design in general. Monitor is great for everything but gaming (no active sync, slower response time, etc). The keyboard and mouse aren’t good for competitive gaming. First party driver support is slow and lacking, it’s not uncommon for their to be a GPU update for a specific game title and good luck with that with bootcamp. Speaking of bootcamp, Windows is where all games are and if the game is available for both often time it’s better in Windows anyway.

I found myself trying to make my Mac in a Windows PC.

I love Macs and they can certainly game however there are better alternatives if your main intent is gaming.

I’m not calling out your Mac because it’s a beast and I’m jealous I can’t justify the expense (too pooooorrrrr!) but to illustrate my point above for gaming I could build a better scoring PC with the cash in my wallet.

Thanks for the reply! I'll read that but I'm still stuck on the choice of either getting a really good pc or just getting an iMac.

I am giving up my iMac and going the Hackintosh route as it sooo much cheaper and powerful. Only downside is not having the 5K monitor but will be using a 43" 4K TV as a monitor instead but it will also have an Xbox X attached to it which you sadly cannot do with the Apple monitor.

Going to be a easy to boot up and select Mac or Windows - sticking both on a separate M2 ram drive so it will boot very fast.

Just make sure if you pick an iMac not to have a fusion drive.
