Ouch, I feel your pain.

Believe it or not, I have a 2010 macbookpro, and I have replaced the memory (16 gb) , new battery and that is it. The best laptop ever. Ever!
I am thinking of switching hard drives, maybe getting a faster one. I use my laptop for music production ( amateur).

But I wont buy a new one. Quite honestly, it is ridiculous to pay so much money for a product that it is basically stuck in time. And fails quite often. I think Apple learnt its lesson.... and we lost.
now they are just another tech corp looking for immediate gratification.

This reminds me of Sony. They were the top dog in electronics, with quite amazing products until the late 90s. Then they started producing garbage that wouldn't last.

Unless you NEED to run software that runs on OSX.only, ...I would skip it.
And there are good refurbished mcbooks pro out there with extended warranty options.

I bought a Macbook Air in July 2018 . The machine decided to go off in Aug 2019. Have been to Apple care. Logic board issue probably . May take 300 to 400 pounds to repair. Will not accept for free repair as I bought it from Argos instead of Apple store. Argos wants me to get an opinion from an independent contractor that it was a manufacturing defect. This of course is not easy. Just about 1 year and 2 weeks from purchase: and I had such high expectations from Apple.

Ok so I have this MacBook Pro 2017 13" with TouchBar. The laptop just completed its 2 year in July. I was on a vacation for 15days out of country and the night I had flight I left my laptop 90% charged in a perfectly fine working condition.

When I came back boom the MacBook is not turning on. I have no idea whats the issue. There is no official Apple Store in my country just one Authorized Service Provider. When I visited that store the lady there without any proper physical diagnosis of Laptop told me there is MLB failure and I will have to go for a replacement which is around $500-600.

I have very important data stored on my laptop I cant let it go.

Guide me what I should do? I can sent my MacBook to Official Apple Store in Dubai.

This is why I stopped buying Apple laptops. They simply cannot diagnose faults with their own products, even when they are under warranty. And a 1 year warranty on such a high-end product is obscene. As is no on-site support option.

I have a (well, had, cause it's a $3000 dollars trash now) macbook pro 15 touchbar model bought in 2017. it arrived with a keyboard issue. "J" was not functioning well. I didn't think it was a big issue then. 3 months ago, it stopped working completely. According to repair center, my logic board exploded. It happened 7 months after the warranty expired. In Brazil, this would cost over $ 1000 dollars to repair, money that I don't have. it is over a month's bills money to me. and a brand new one costs over $ 6000 dollars.
Thing is, I don't think I misused it. Judge for yourselves. I never dropped it, never spilled a single drop on it. One night I was watching a movie, put my mackbook in a wooden furniture next to bed and I fell asleep. When I woke up, everything was normal. screen was on, so I closed it, so it could sleep a bit. went for breakfast. When I came back and opened it the screen was not turning on. I tried several things but was not listening to fan sound, so I took it to the repair center. "well, it's dead, no energy at all" said the guy. after several days they said the logic board was the issue and they showed me the picture of the glass around the board all cracked.
I don't have the money to repair it, and I'm lucky I could borrow my old iMac the I had given to my brother. So i could keep working. Or else I wouldn't be even able to work.
I'm so disappointed at Apple that I'm considering switching back to Windows, which I really dislike, or try Linux... after nice happy 16 years using Apple everything.
Apple is not trustworthy anymore.

This is stuff that just shouldn't happen.

I've purchased a lot of MacBook Pros since 2007 and would not expect a failure after two years.
Exactly, my macbook pro from 2007 still works perfectly for a 12 years computer.

There are always hardware failures. To say it "shouldn't happen" it a bit naive. It's frustrating when it happens to us, but it does happen. This is why Apple providers a warranty and an option for extending the warranty via AppleCare.

My 2017 MacBook Pro 13inch (non touch bar) has also died after 2 years and 2 months (just outside the retailers guarantee period). Strangely like another post, it stopped working when I returned from holiday where it was unplugged from power.

I took it to an Apple store whom confirmed it was a logic board fault. They also stated in their estimate that there was no signs of damage and the fault was not caused by customer misuse. The repair estimate is just under £500.

I am currently in a dispute with retailer. Citizens Advice are certain the retailer should repair under Consumer Rights Act 2015 with this evidence. The retailer is disputing the fault can't be proven as inherent.

They have offered a partial contribution to the repair in good will, but it seems unless the manufacturer explicitly declares it an inherent fault (where they would have to provide a recall anyway), the retailers are trying to slip out of their responsibilities under law.

Would be interested to know if anyone else manages a successful Consumer Rights Act claim.

As for Apple, this product isn't of satisfactory quality, especially given its price compared to the rest of the market. I disagree with comments that people should buy AppleCare. At this premium price, the product should be backed with a non fuss guarantee/warranty for a reasonable period expected of a laptop (i.e. 5 years).

Perhaps if many failures are now starting to occurr for this 2017 Macbook Pro product, a product recall may be coming...

I have a late 2013 MBP that the main logic board failed a couple months out of AppleCare coverage and had to pay the $500 to have it fixed. Within a month it failed again and was still having charging issues (wouldn’t charge/heated up more than normal during charging to the point the charging port and cable burned), so it went back in for more work that was covered since it was within the 90 days. This was 2 years ago and it’s been perfect ever since, well, until I dropped it and cracked the lcd the other day.

I have a MBP 2017 4 port USBC that I was using before boarding a plane. I put it to sleep manually and placed it in my carry on. After 2 Hr flight it does not even power on. Apple Store says that its the logic board (is there anything else in it). To their credit however, under my countries consumer laws a minimum 2 year warranty (inside by 2 months) is applicable to it due to the price. Apple only give 3 months warranty on their replacement boards. They will not support Apple Care for their own warranty replacements. I'm checking my countries laws on consumer warranty repairs because 3 months does not seem appropriate for a $700 repair item (thats the price quoted before discount to $0).

A friend has just called me with a similar problem - April 2017 MBP 13inch retina machine which the Apple store has told her has a failed logic board and will cost £460 to repair. Seems to be happening rather a lot.

Update: I'm getting it fixed by an independent engineer but it's still going to be expensive - around £250. He says Apple will only cave in and admit a fault on these machines if there is a class action.

I have the 2017 MBP without touch bar, with 16GB of RAM. All of a sudden, the laptop wouldn't power on or take a charge. I suspected logic board failure, and took it to the "Genius" bar for diagnostics. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with it either, but also thought it was probably the logic board. They wanted to charge $500 to send it to the repair facility for further diagnostic work. Additionally, when either the logic board or SSD fail on this particular model of the MBP without touch bar, both components need to be replaced simultaneously. I argued that this is clearly a design flaw for a less than 2 year old computer to basically self-destruct. They wouldn't budge and said that it was out of the manufacturer 1 year warranty.

This is ridiculous, to invest $1700 on a laptop expecting it to last 5-6 years, and having it blow up due to poor engineering. Is this is quality of products that Apple has come to accept? You would think that they would admit to screwing up, and offer to foot the bill for repairing the machine.

Has anyone else had a similar issue with Apple? I'm at a loss here, as I'm worried the laptop will just end up blowing another logic board if I pay to repair it, as this seems to be a major design error. As a lifetime Apple user, I am incredibly disappointed with the quality of products Apple is selling, and the customer service is just awful. I don't think I will be purchasing any Apple products in the future. I'd rather buy an XPS and put Linux on it. Apple really dropped the ball with these new model MacBook's.
Yes!! I’ve also had issues and luckily bought AppleCare or it would’ve cost me $635 cad to Fix and replace the logic board. It’s just my husband and I and I mainly use it to do normal personal on line home use. I bought it custom built July 2017 to have this happen Dec. 2019. I can’t imagine what I would do without having the Apple care. $80 beat spent that being said I had a Toshiba Laptop for over a decade and gave it to my sister for light use while I wanted to switch to Mac because I love my iPhone. The Toshiba Laptop is still going although it needs a 2nd battery but the motherboard still going strong! Toshiba products were best made product including their TVs which we still have. I pray that we don’t have the same issue once it’s replaced. It apparently comes with a 3 month warranty on the new one which makes absolutely no sense to me as three months doesn’t say much for their product and considering I paid for Apple care and it should be good until July 2020 and I can’t even buy an extension Apple care. Ugh!! It better last me a decade!

apple has had flaws in every single MacBook they have every made eevery single year. and they have gotten worse. I have never ever bought one since 2008 and never will. Tell me how bad does a company have to be where their own computers FRIES their own CPUS because of the hardware design. you will be better off never buying these pieces of **** again. Especially now that apple has designed the 2019s to where if your T chip breaks... you cant fix it without completely getting a new motherboard.....

I've been using my 2014 MBP daily since 2014 and it's a great laptop and I expect to get ten years out of it. There are a lot of happy MBP customers out there.

I have a Late 2013 15" retina, a late 2009 white macbook, and 2 unibody macs and a mac mini. Besides the retina and one unibody mbp none of the others had warranty repairs or post warranty. The retina had multiple issues and was replace by apple, the replacement too had a screen issue and then top case issue but beyond that there have not been any repairs post warranty. Only recently the battery gave up and i felt annoyed that apple would not keep stock of a consumable part and we just cannot get the oem battery anywhere.
That said we do not have apple owned stores here just resellers and AASP some are very helpful, one of my friend had a logic board change within apple care and a few months after it expired the logic board gave up again. The tech told us to call apple and see if they can help in any way. In the end apple made an exception cause the board was changed prior to expiry of apple care.
Reading most posts online I was of the idea that to buy macs its more sane to take apple care use it for 3 years and sell it off before any expensive issue crops up. I have no clue about the reliability of their recent macs and i really would wished apple would have kept batteries in stock, it is a rather pain finding a decent third party battery here.

I have a 15 inch retina macbook pro and the logic board just died. My country's laws are 2 year warranty and it's been only 2 years and 6 months.

This is the third macbook pro that i've had through the years the last one also had a faulty motherboard that was replaced twice!!! One thing for sure, this is the last apple product I'll buy. I'm going to migrate to linux.

In the meantime I'll try complaining to get a rebate on the 730€ (!!!) repair cost. Apple has become a synonym with unreliable. Never again!

So it's outside of warranty?

Same story here. 2017 MBP touchbar. Was using it and it just turned itself off, never to boot again. That’s pretty much my office and all my work. I guess since we let them charge 1000 dollars for a phone this laptops started to look expendable. I’m also pretty much ****d with the pandemic and the lockdown in my country. I’m desperate.

Same EXACT story as above. 2017 MBP w/ Touchbar. Went out and wouldn’t turn back on.

The certified Apple technician verified it needs a new Logic Board.

Will end up costing me $570 (Parts & Labor).

Yes - I had one last Christmas from a customer I support - Apple store in the UK quoted £460 which I thought was outrageous. I sent it to an engineer I use and he got it done for a bit less but it was a real pain of a job - seemed to be multiple things wrong with this machine - the ic controlling the cpu, the SMC chip, another internal fault on the board and an issue with the LVDS cable. Complete nightmare. Apple really needs to do better.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record... I purchased a 2017 mbp w/o touchbar in May 2019 (got it on sale for $1k - thought it was a great deal). By October it wouldn't charge or turn on, so Apple replaced my logic board and top case w/ battery at no cost to me. It stopped working again in February, this time with repeated kernel panics. They've replaced it for a 2nd time and advised that if and when it happens again, they would replace mine with a refurbished machine for free, even if outside of my 1-year warranty (which ends in a week). I don't have Applecare btw, and their refurbished machine guarantee does nothing to comfort me - if it's another of my same model how will i know it's not faulty. I was in the middle of an intense certification prep program when it went out that 2nd time and it was entirely too frustrating. I know it sounds insane, but I'd rather buy a 2019 or 2020 model with Applecare to save myself the headache. For anyone interested, I'm planning to sell my 2017 mbp to GoRoostr https://goroostr.com/ for $450. It's more than Apple and Best Buy quoted me.

I have a 2017 and after luckily I bought the Apple care and end of last year 2019 I had the logic board replaced. I too am worried it’ll go again as I don’t know what they put in the computer. It appears that there is an issue here that Apple needs to acknowledge and give more than Reg warranty after replacement and add additional warranty to Apple care. For the amount I spent getting my computer custom to my needs is happy that I always buy the AppleCare. I just hope it doesn’t go. I had a 2009 Toshiba Laptop last over a decade and it’s still going strong albeit a little slower. It’s thee best computer product that I’ve ever purchased and has proven time and time again. Only thing that’s ever need replacing was the battery and that was maybe $75 cad. I love Mac and have every Mac product known to their line! They better take care of us clients with such and apparent known issues.
