That was my case too, I run two exact FHD 24" monitors and in clamshell mode, I was able to run at around 8W. Now I have to enable low power mode or it runs at 15W in the same config.

I'm on the same boat, so I just put my 16" on sale :| Will upgrade to 14" or M1.

You can't run more than 1 external monitors with M1

I have updated today to Monterey a bit earlier, obviously though the beta programme. I have an i7 with 5300M and I'm a bit disappointed by the new low power mode feature. I'll explain with some details below.

Setup: 2 x DELL P2419HC monitors connected via USB-C

Low Power Mode OFF
  • Clamshell mode - 13-15W
  • Lid Open - 13-15W
Low Power Mode ON
  • Clamshell mode - 3-5W
  • Lid Open - 5-7W
In BigSur in Clamshell mode I was getting 5-7W without compromising on CPU performance. I don't know about you but if your using clamshell you might get the same results as me, a bigger power draw (13-15) for the same way of working. If you're working with your lid open you'll definitely see some improvements.

LE: I was getting those numbers on idle.
What application are you using to see these figures? (13-15W 3-5W etc.)
I only have the Activity Monitor and it only shows a window with graphic bars and no numbers, it seems.

Exelban/Stats or iStat menus. The statistic is GPU or Radeon High Side. iStat has more features but Stats is free.

Nice! in big sur I see constant 19-20w, that's about 25% improvement

So with Monterey (the latest version) it’s around 6W with the lid open and one extrnal monitor. However if you just play a YouTube video in one of the monitors (I believe more GPU is needed for rendering it) the power consumption on Radeon High Side goes up to 12W :( Haven’t tried any other software that requires GPU to kick in since I mostly do programming.

They reduced it to 6w with lid open and to 12w with dgpu acceleration from constant 20w and you are sad???? Common man, your expectations from old apple/intel/amd platform are too high IMO ;) be happy that it’s improved so much or buy a new hardware…. ;)

I’m not sad, not fully satisfied I would say :) Power mode feature give us a significant improvement ? in terms of Radeon power consumption. Just saying that with 12W fans are audible runnig 3.5K rpm at least with my setup.

Yeah, I’m so interested in trying Monterey when it will go public.

If we want apple to have a 20w->6w GPU fix without throttling CPU. We need to let apple know. The more people send it the better.

Can everyone here send fix request to apple?

My feedback request to apple is high power model use GPU 6w fix with CPU unthrottled

I sent in a request and urge others to do the same. I'm not optimistic it will make a difference, but certainly the odds are better of something happening the more people that write in.

It looks like if I drop-down refresh rate to 50Hz on both monitors I can get 5-8W in LPM OFF.

they really fixed it!
Nah, doesn't feel like a fix for me, before I could get those W numbers without adjusting the refresh rate of monitors, now I either have to use a lower refresh rate or LPM, the only thing that is "fixed" in my case is that now with laptop screen open I can get 14W (LPM OFF) or 8W (LPM ON). Whish to get this LPM switch somewhere in the menu bar tho :D

I'm still trying to sell this laptop, but so far no success.

Yeah, just checking, you could reach those numbers with the lid closed and one monitor connected? Right?

If so, then it is a “somewhat fix” for me, now you can set it up with lid opened, 50hz and one monitor connected :)

But I agree, it would be more awesome to set the refresh rate higher but I think we need to be a little reasonable here. It is an old hardware now.
Mine makes money for me still, so I’m not eager to sell it and replace it with m1. It is snappy, good battery life, with egpu it can endure tortures full day without fans going loud. I’m planning to use it for many more years :)

In Big Sure 2xFHD Dell monitors lid closed 7-8W without adjusting anything.

Now, 2xFHD Dell monitors lid closed LPM OFF - 15W. To get this 7-8W I have to either use LPM or drop to 50Hz, you can see on those screenshots that there are 2xFHD Dell monitors.

Whoa, sorry I haven't seen that, maybe they are trying to balance it somehow, bummer.
If in my case things will be worst, then I'll downgrade to Big Sur and wait how things will change in time...

Yeah, so as I said the only thing that is fixed for me is that I can use the lid open laptop with external display turn the LPM ON, and get 8W on GPU in big sure I couldn't do anything so the GPU stays on 19-20W.

But I rarely use my laptop in that set up most of the time I use it with the lid closed and connected to 2xFHD external monitors.

I upgraded Mac OS Monterey. With a 4k 60hz external display which is connected with type c, Radeon High Side draws 15W. It used to draw 20W constantly when I was using Catalina/Big Sur.

Btw, I use my monitor with a 1440p scaled resolution.

When I was tried for the first time there is no difference with the low power mode. After I unplugged the monitor cable and then plugged it, I activated the ''low power mode''. Now it draws 7-9W.

Finally, after 2 years of waiting Apple solved the problem.

I have never heard my machine that silent.

I just updated public Monterey right now and the issue is still there.

19W with low power mode hdmi connected to 120hz 1080p
I think your problem is in 120 HZ monitor. Set your monitor to 60Hz, Turn On Low Power Mode and "the fix" should be there. :) I also have installed 12.0.1 and with LPM with lid open and 2K LG connected, GPU is drawing 6-7 watts.

Same here. 16" base model, 4K 60Hz 27" monitor. Lid open. Low Power Mode.
It goes between 6W and 7W. Sometimes I see up to 10W.

Temp is around 66C. Fans around 2,200 RPM.

I must say, this makes my MBP 16" a much nicer machine. Now I can actually use Teams and my computer won't go that hot.
