I wasn't clear. When I wondered if I could have SSD & Fusion, I meant Apple's Fusion drive, not "VMware Fusion". One recommendation above was to have an external SSD. I'd want to wait until I had a Thunderbolt 3 plug to get that. (I tried to find something to allow TB3 devices plug into a TB1 Mac, but failed. I have one that goes the other way so that my devices can plug into my wife's iMac)
I have run the Activity Monitor without seeing any indicator that more memory would help. But adding more memory to this old Mac wouldn't cost much if I could move it to the new Mac. But I don't know whether it would help. (Nice that I have the 27" iMac for this).
I have been hesitant about moving my iTunes and Photos libraries off of my iMac (I deleted the movies a year ago). Partly, this is because I pay for extra storage on my wife's account, and haven't had success making all of my data and devices using her big family icloud drive instead of my own "free" icloud drive. And it's nice to not depend upon being connected.
