I'll try continuing with the analogy again.
Since the slots are wired as channel A-A-B-B. It will make sense to keep the width of the road the same for each direction so we put it as 16-4-16-4.
If Mac logic boards can also support Flex Memory Mode as jeboles mentioned than this way of thinking would seem obsolete.

It looks like you'll do fine with 20GB.

Ah ok, that makes it clear, I thought they ever sloted 1 &3 and 2 & 4, so ABAB, so that if we had 16 4 16 4 we had 32 on a channel and 8 on the other. If they are wired AABB that makes total sense as you would have 20 per channel?

IS that right?

Is 16gb more than enough for regular web browsing on the new iMac?
Yes...unless you keep 50+ Chrome browser tabs open at any one time. I regularly was maxed with 16GB of DRAM (MBP 15”) and had 20+ Safari tabs, Mail, Photoshop, Slack, Preview, Excel, iAWriter and Marked open at the same time without any lag whatsoever.

Trying to decide whether I should just order 16gb from apple or 8gb and purchase 32gb from crucial.

Unless you absolutely think you cannot is tall DRAM yourself, I would buy the Crucial kit and go to 40GB for the same price as Apple’s 16GB. With DDR-2666 so ubiquitous now that it’s not like you are dealing with some exotic new RAM or new form factor with a fiddly slot mechanism.
[doublepost=1553731439][/doublepost]On the flip side, those of you trying to use some janky DRAM config because you picked up an SO-DIMM here or there...stop it. Suck it up, buy two matching DIMMs in the same size and speed from a reputable manufacturer and be done with it.

If the way I have worded the above bothers you, please know that you are the reason Apple solders DRAM to most of its laptops and makes it difficult with the rest of the lineup. Finding a good deal on quality RAM is not a bad thing, but throwing in a stick here or there like you are building a jalopy in cousin Eddie’s garage and expecting macOS and the Mac it’s in to run like a well-oiled machine is just a fool’s errand. STOP. IT.

Do you recommend the owc ram or crucial from amazon?

I bought my iMac with 8 GB RAM and added additional 32 GB for ~$210

Go with Crucial. Never had any problems with it.

40 GB is better than 32 GB for the same price roughly :)

Either should be fine. I have purchased from both places before with no issues.

The last major issue I had was with a Kingston pack 4x8GB SO-DIMMs that would not work correctly my Late 2013 27” iMac. I divided those between two 16GB Macs (MBP 2011 and mini 2011) and they worked fine. The 2013 27” iMac in question is less flaky with the OWC DRAM, although I am now having Wake/Sleep issues with it after upgrading to HIgh Sierra and using NVIDIA Web Drivers and CUDA Driver. Basically, it is the only certified refurbished unit I have ever bought where I wish I had returned it when I had the chance. It runs pretty well, until it doesn’t and it reboots itself. But, I digress...

I also have a Kingston USB 3 drive that is slower than molasses, so maybe don’t buy Kingston.

Yes, and we should leave it at that since going more in depth is above my RAM knowledge

16GB is a comfortable minimum.

For regular office use, I would get 1TB SSD instead of 32GB RAM if it had to be one over the other.

The SSD are very fast that it will be hard to notice the computer bringing office apps into the RAM from SSD because the RAM is full (swap used).

Just to follow up here - "old" RAM installed and system up and running.
