I have a weird issue with my ipad, when it’s plugged and charging the screen is much less responsive. whether it’s clicking a link or typing on the keyboard it often takes multiple repeated presses. Typing is hard because it’ll miss letters that I have to back and fix. If I unplug it, lock the screen, then unlock it everything is fine. When I first upgraded to ios13 it seemed to improve, but has gradually returned With subsequen updates. I have changed charging cables with much relief And it seems to happen on any charger. Any ideas of what is happening and any fix ideas other than taking it in?

Which version of iPadOS 13 is your iPad Air 3 on?

Bad charger or bad electrical installation

You're probably facing a hardware failure of the iPad touch screen. It's quite a well known disease affecting all modern iPads. It usually starts with unresponsive screen while charging and then it continues when you screen becomes unresponsive for a while no matter if you're charging it or not (look up "iPad unresponsive screen" on the Internet).

Usually happens after 3-12 months of usage.

If it's like so then please beware. It happens to all modern iPads and Apple denies any replacements if you're outside warranty. If you're still inside warranty window I highly recommend you to replace your iPad with Apple AND do the extensive testing of the new iPad that you just received. People here reported problems with 2nd, 3rd and so on replacements. Unfortunately that's modern Apple.

That's exactly what happened to my last three iPads.
I had to go several times to the genius bar in each case (I had to restore the software first, then I needed to show it to them again, then I had to fetch the replacement a week later).
They never admitted that this is a very common error, even when another customer was having the same issue with her iPad, sitting with me at the same table at the genius bar.
If you are having this issue it might help to record it on video and show it at the genius bar. Don't forget to make a restoration of iOS before you go, otherwise they could turn you away the first time and you need to show up a second time.
Very frustrating.

Set the iPad on a table while it's charging. Touch its metal bezel with a single finger on your off hand while operating the screen with a single finger on your dominant hand.

Is the screen more responsive?

Somebody should really make a list of these known issues that Apple isn’t addressing.

1.) It would tick Apple off and out pressure on Apple to address them. Could you imagine someone walking into an Apple Store and being told the same line of BS. And the consumer responding sayping, I found this list on macrumors.com (or wherever that has a decent name) and it’s weird I have this exact same problem they are saying is common?

2.) Less of these posts flung all over the board. But depending on this site’s philosophy, more posts even if they are redundant might be better for them because it’s more content.

Yep, no surprise my Air 3 is showing up with touch irresponsiveness. Barely two months in.

🤬

I recorded it this morning though.

At this point, I think learning to draw traditionally is my best bet. Every iPad I've purchased and returned etc. since 2017 (No matter what model) has come up with this.

It's ridiculous, and so is my faith in Apple.

two months is to late to return it?

It’s still under warranty.

Are you gonna call Apple Support? Let us know what they say?

I'll try to return it tomorrow morning, I have other items that are going back that I bought more recently too.

This all is I need with Real Life bearing down on me so hard.

If I return, I'll post. Apple Support over the phone won't do anything.

Apple Support would not accept the return for refund even with the video only exchange, but the manager at the store let me return for refund another legimate reason: the arthritis in my wrists was flaring up when using the iPad.

I guess it depends on the store manager and just be really nice. Make sure you have a video of it.

As for me, I am out. Silly that I tried 10 times with the iPads since 2017, but there you go.

I wish everyone good luck with their returns and their iPads.

@kazmac - Thanks for the update. What the manager did was, good for you, and I’m glad he took care of you. But I’m thinking it’s bad for the user base at large. Because it sounds like the manager was careful not to process a return based on what is a common problem a Lot of people are having to deal with.

It’s like the manager found a way to make the customer in front of him happy without upsetting his supervisors above him?

Which would be fine. Except his supervisors are taking a position which isn’t fair to the customers at large.

And kazmac, I agree with your decision to just go pencil and paper. I try not to adopt technology until it is mainstream and proven. And apparently these iPads just can’t handle how you use them. Paper feels better to write on than an iPad anyway. Even Tim Cook would acknowledge that.

Oh I get that completely and I agree 100% about the manager not addressing the major flaw of iPads from 2017 on.

They absolutely do need to address this touch irresponsiveness issue (and they should have with the gen 3 iPad Pro), but I am still thinking heat generated from the A chip and charging are both culprits, as every single iPad I attempted to own got ridiculously hot (downloading movies on WiFi, drawing in Procreate, or multitasking) and then the touch screen irresponsiveness started. Heat without decent vents, very thin chassis and gluing the touch components in is not a good thing.

The build "quality" of the iPads and other malarky has soured me on Apple, which stinks because I loved using Macs to create. I do not trust buying a Mac from them now given the disposable nature of the iDevices. It's sad that I cannot use any iPad to draw, as the art been so much fun and therapeutic for me. Having to quit Procreate in the midst of a drawing, pair and unpair the pencil and restarting the iPad is not a fix.

I truly hope Apple wakes up and fixes the touch irresponsiveness problem, but I have a feeling they will not do this until the Wall Street Journal, and/or class action lawsuits about it force them to.

I do hope everyone in these threads gets a working iPad that will not develop these issues again, but honestly, that's a pipe dream at this point.

Good luck to you and everyone else who is having issues. I wish I had better news on this issue. I've ordered more traditional art supplies and will get cracking on that Nature Journaling class this weekend.

You should create a thread for that point alone. It would be interesting to see how that would unfold... 😏

I thought that was a given? I’ve only tried writing on an iPad with a third party stylus just before the Apple Pencil came out. But the way it felt rubbing this rubbery tip covered with some fuzzy material across glass, I was like “wow, this will never be like paper!” And then I’ve only heard comments here and there since.

I’m sure Apple has improved the experience with all the research they do and with the extra time since I’ve tried it. But have they gotten it to the point where some people prefer it over paper?

This would be the first I’ve heard of it if so.

There are some screen protectors out there that mimic paper.

Ironically screen protectors make the screen much less responsive https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250226155

So the "built-in" hardware problem with unresponsive touch screen becomes even worse. iPad is becoming a true disaster product for Apple.

I can't take you seriously anymore.

Yeah, the whole situation is ridiculous.
1. iPad can stop responding to touch after a while, basically breaks
2. Apple denies the problem exists because they don't want to lose money.
3. The denial is on the corporate level, their repair hardware tool doesn't detect it. When it goes to repair it doesn't get repaired.
4. Consumers receive broken products back and it's getting worse, because more and more people dump their non-working hardware
5. Add a screen protector problem (48 pages of discussion, you can also google it), same way denied by Apple

Here you get a ridiculous loop that generates more and more broken iPads that will be never repaired and get back to customers over and over.
