I have found several articles where it sounds like something similar is happening on a number of 2019 MacBooks, but I just experienced my 3rd shut down in 36 hours. All three times I was in an Adobe app, but I am in an Adobe app 90% of the time - so, I cannot be sure that is the problem?

What has been happening is the cursor hesitates then the Mac just shuts off completely (power light on top goes out). Have to do a cold start. Anyone seeing this behavior? I have not had any problems with going to sleep or waking.

I have the same behaviour on a client's 2013 mac pro. I have ruled out disk, system and ram issues, that leaves me with faulty i/o board. power, motherboard. When not shutting down, the mac passes all tests such as mac diagnostics etc

Is it running Catalina?

FCPX and PP have been up and running 24/7 prior and post to the last OS update with no premature shutdowns. Nothing new added to the interior of the 7,1 over BTO. I have the feeling that's the way I'm going to keep it for quite awhile.

My Trashcan MP started doing this as well (in High Sierra). Thought I had caught a bad security update, upgraded to Mojave and it kept doing it with increasing frequency to the point where it could only stay up for short bursts and barely made it through firmware updates.

It happened in image viewers, 3D apps and sometimes on the desktop. System load seemed to make no difference. Once it seems to have crashed during a power nap wake during the night (even though power nap is turned off it still comes on briefly every two hours or so).

It has been repaired twice now (under warranty). Not sure what exactly was done. Current uptime is 30 days, knock-on-wood. Software has not changed (still Mojave) and does not appear to be the issue. Also no log file entries I could find, etc.

Patience is wearing thin here, parts for a hack have already been chosen. Fingers crossed that it won't be needed.

I paid $200usd for this 2013 trash can 'as is' , and it contained a 2TB new OWC aura pro SSD and 32GB ram, both working fine in other macs.... I think I will part the rest out on ebay rather than try and repair it, then whoever gets the dud part can have a refund (probably either the I/O board or motherboard. I think the videocards are OK...

@macguru9999 Yeah on the second repair on mine I think GPUs were ruled out and it was between power supply, mainboard and I/O. It took them a while to replicate my issue too since running some stress test did not exhibit the problem. I had to go into detail what I was doing with the box and what devices were hooked up and apart from the one crash during the night it all happened when I was sitting right in front of it.

@choreo Bottom line: make sure you are covered with extended warranty and don't be shy about throwing the box back into their faces. Also keep a backup system set up to work with. If its a hardware issue it may take a few attempts to nail down. I think I lost about 2 months with mine in repairs so far.

Just shut down again. I am starting to suspect this is something in Adobe causing this. This time, I opened Illustrator CC2020, when to the application menu to choose another workspace and got the spinning beachball followed by shutdown. This is the message I got on restart:

I live in Adobe CC apps and Microsoft 365 apps. I have had no issue with any of my computers shutting down - whether it's the Mac Pro 2019 (Catalina), MacBook Pro 16 2019 (Catalina), MacBook Pro 15 2018 (Mojave), Dell XPS 13 (Win 10), and Asus ROG (Win 10).

I would assume you are only experiencing this on your Mac Pro and not your prior Apple equipment in your signature? If so suggest to do a complete restore on your Mac Pro. Start from scratch. And when I say restore, I mean downloading the Apple Configurator 2 app on your laptop and reseting the T2 chip on your Mac Pro.

I don't have to remind you to remove everything you added in there in your PCIe slot including additional memory sticks. As well as backup on Time Machine.

Once you have restored from scratch and reinstalled your OS. Don't reinstall anything including your backup. Observe for a day if your Mac Pro is running fine on it's own.

No restart after 24 hours? Time to start installing your peripherals - memory stick. Pause and use for half a day.

No restart? Install PCIe cards and use for the next half day.

No restart after another 24 hours? Do a Time Machine restore.

The point is to eliminate what is causing the kernel panic. Is it hardware? Software? And you can only do this by process of elimination. But do it fast while you are within your 14-day return and replace without having to deal with a repair.

It has taken me ten 8-hour days just to get all my software and settings ported over - doing mostly clean installs, etc. Still not done - have not even started on printer drivers, etc! So won't be able to do all this within the 14 days which ends day after tomorrow. Also it has only been shutting down about once a day - I sometimes can work for hours with no problem, in fact I have not yet experienced two shutdowns within 24 hours so far. It also has been going to sleep every night and waking up every morning without any issues so far. The first couple times it shut down it took me by surprise and I did not really pay much attention to what I was doing that might have triggered it, but all four shut downs have happened in response to a mouse movement or mouse-click.

^^^^I had this issue when visiting a certain site. Since I stopped, No More. I use Photoshop and Acrobat and no issues there:

As far as moving from my 5,1 to my 7,1 Mac Pros. I simply moved my drives over, updated the OS drive to Catalina and voila. Reinstalling everything is not for me.

I have not had to unplug my Mac to get it to restart. When it shuts off, I just notice that the power button light goes out. As soon as I hit the power button it immediately shows me the Login Screen and after entering my password it reloads my desktop and extensions. So it is not like a full restart (with apple logo and progress bar) - it is more like a log-out with powering off.

In my case its just this one client mac pro, and its not software, BUT, is there a way to revert to older firmware ?? I would like to see what that does as his problems are alot worse now he has tried catalina, but as i said reverting to mojave now makes no difference.

10 x 8-hour days to move over your stuff? Not to discount the work you did, but porting over from my previous Mac took me less than half a day with a straight migration. I didn't do a clean install and had zero shutdowns. My point being if this is hardware related, you might have to act fast. If it's software issue, that may or may not take awhile to figure out if you don't take the time to remove and reinstall one by one.

If I were in your place, more than one shut down and I would have told Apple to replace my Mac Pro by now or be stuck with trying to have them repair it. But it depends on your comfort level in letting go the computer you invested in and waiting for another.

In your initial post in this thread you mentioned that you are having problems on a client's 2013 Mac Pro (i.e. 6,1 trashcan design?). If so, this thread is in reference to the new 2019 7,1 Mac Pro.

I visited the website you said was shutting down your computer. Nothing happened to mine. I'm thinking it's a coincidence or a scripting issue that's triggering a panic.

I am sort of wondering if what I am experiencing might be related to the W5700X card installed - especially since it is so new?

See Hotshoe's post #24 & #36 here:

If it ends up the graphics card that would be a lot easier to replace than trying to box up and ship the entire Mac Pro back to Apple - especially since they may not be able to find the source anyway.

Good one. After scanning through that thread you linked, it does appear to be the GPU. I'm hoping it's just a driver compatibility issue that can be easily patched. I would contact Apple so they can tally another person to the issue and get a fix sooner than later.

The OP of that thread needs to update the heading though with the incorrect video card he indicated.

Just to clarify: the issue I encountered on my machine and assumed to be the same one that was referred to in the first post is that the box shuts down without any trace of kernel panics or obvious error log entries.

Seeing the kernel panic report posted above then to me this is not looking like the same issue at all.

To clarify - this thread was started by the OP with regards to the 2019 Mac Pro 7,1.

After discussion, it appears to be an issue with the newest GPU offering W5700X - either a driver or card but is unknown at this point.

Per conversation of another poster along this line, Apple Tech seems to be aware of the issue.

2019 owners with another GPU are not experiencing this issue.

Looks like my Mac Pro finally died a fiery death 14-days to the minute!

I had two "freezes" in Illustrator yesterday where the cursor just stopped on the screen right after launching a small file. No keyboard or mouse responses - had to hold down the power button to force a shutdown. In both cases the machine started back up without an apparent restart sequence, more like it had just logged out - where it came back on asking for my password? Worked on the computer all day off and on with no problems waking from sleep.

Tonight at midnight, tried too wake the computer up by hitting the spacebar and two if my three monitors showed the blue power light come on, but no screen image and finally said "No Signal" before going back into standby mode (amber light).

Tried a forced shutdown and powering up again - went through what looked like a startup sequence with the Apple logo and progress bar on the left screen (as usual), then "nothing". Left and center monitors said "No Signal" and went into standby mode - right monitor never responded at all.

Forced a shutdown again, then started up holding down the "D-key". It ran through the diagnostic routine for one minute then said Mac was fine on the left screen. Selected Restart - appeared to restart, but again never got to any screen images or login screen - then all monitors went into Standby mode.

So I guess it is dead?

Went ahead and removed a couple PCI cards I had added a couple days ago and unplugged everything from the back except the power cord and one monitor. Tried to restart, and same thing... Apple logo, progress bar, followed by "No Signal" message on monitor.
