Hi all,

I'm planning to buy the Mac Pro from oversea because of the availability and the cost, but I wonder what the weight and the dimension of the shipping box?

I will appreciate for any reply in this topic.

Thanks

I can measure the box tomorrow if someone else doesn’t get to it before me, but UPS clocked the weight at 82lbs.

29x20x31 (inches) and 82 pounds.

edit: that's just one configuration, weight may vary a small amount with different cards etc... This one had two MPX modules (GPUs) in it.

One person reported that the box/container itself weighed close to 50 pounds. Personally question why a Pelican-style case was not used as the shipping container at that point. With wheels, many are under 30 pounds and meet or exceed ATA specs.

Thanks for your offer. Which configuration did you get?

It is a huge box and it would cost me a fortune to ship it. The volumetric weight of that box is 130lbs, that's too much

Imagine if they use Pelican- Style case to ship, how much they will charge the customer for the case? I would say around $1k since the cost of the pelican and the weight of pelican added for the shipping.

You must be kidding me though. If I ship it from oversea, I would be paying all the shipping costs just for the packaging?

As shocking as it sounds, a Pelican case would be around 15 lbs lighter than the box Apple designed and take a better beating through shipping. Injection molded ABS is lighter than the engineered cardboard type double/triple box they’re using.

Not joking . I was shocked when my Mac Pro 7,1 arrived . Firstly , UPS required no signature for delivery of a $6,000 computer and secondly , I wondered why the driver struggled so greatly climbing up the stairs to my door . It must weigh some 83 pounds .

This is a positive sign that there's so much packing material. I saved the boxes for both the MP (sandcrawler aka cheese grater) and 30" cinema display. I flew with them multiple times as checked luggage. The only thing I did was spray paint them black and reinforce all the edges with packing tape after each trip. I plan to keep the box it arrives in for future transport.

This is not the first posting with a weight exceeding 80LBS. When I first heard the number, I though it was for both the computer and display. Now it appears it is only for the MP.

Rylym, curious why you're worried about the shipping cost. Apple ships if for free (as do other companies located in New York).

I think the Apple team that designed the packaging must have read countless postings on the forums about how , "My Mac Pro 2,1 looked just sooooo pristine in the eBay listing , but when it arrived it look like Godzilla used it as a chew toy ...," ad infinitum .

Case separations , permanent scratches and bent handles were legion with the 2006-2012 models , as the chassis were aluminum .

Most likely no one will steal the package.

Since the total dimension exceeds 62", then how do you check it in?

I just moved to Malaysia a couple months ago, and notice the price difference between the USA unit and Malaysia unit is around $ 500 and not including all the 6% cashback from Apple card. Therefore, I was thinking to ship it to Malaysia

The old sand crawler MP weighed considerably less than 50LBS in the box. The new one is clearly a lot bigger and heavier.

There appears to be an Apple Store in Malaysia. What price are they quoting?

My courier told me that in all of his time he hadn’t seen such a cumbersome and heavy box with no handles. no Wonder some MR members are seeing their MPs dropped from carts!

They are charging $6279 for the base model. The more you configure, the bigger the price's difference

I assume he must has a strong back

No problem! It's a 12-core, 48GB RAM, 2TB SSD, Radeon Pro 580X GPU.

I'm thinking to get the base model with Radeon Pro Vega II Duo with 2x32GB of HBM2 memory. Are you planning to upgrade the 580X GPU?

I'm sure I will at some point, but no immediate plans to. I ran a few tests with some games and the graphics performance is much improved over my 2018 15" MBP, and my older Mac Pro. So, despite the age of the 580X GPU, it's still basically an upgrade for me. I probably would have opted for the 5700 if it was available, but the other options were more than I wanted to spend. At the end of the day, it's not something that will impact how I use the Mac Pro on a day to day basis anyway.

For those of you who received your new Mac Pro, could you please weigh box and let us know how much it weighs?

just the box or the box with everything in it? UPS had the full weight at 82 pounds but I still have an empty box here I can weight later if you need just the box weight (internal box that is, not the cardboard they wrapped around it).

I weighed the box with all of the inner boxes and plastic wrap (but without the Mac Pro or accessories), and it came in at 25.55 lbs.

This doesn't include the shipping box with it's big foam inserts which I'm guessing adds a couple extra pounds. I'll grab the scale to weigh that one later.

I have already used the box several times to transport my Mac Pro. It’s fantastic if you ever need to move the computer around.

Agreed! I typically save all of my boxes, but this one is super nice and definitely worth saving. Unfortunately it’s so big, so those with less storage space might not love it. :p
