MP 7,1

So I have a offer to buy a 2019 7,1 with no Wifi or Bluetooth working and no gpu for $750. It has 98gb RAM and 2 TB storage. I have a maxed out 5,1 with a couple 580's and a RX6600XT so no issue there. What could be the issue with the WiFi an BT? What WiFi card does the 2019 MP have? Anyone use a PCIe wifi Card with wifi if I can't fix this? What adapter is needed for a non OEM GPU?

Wireless module is on the top of the chassis, you can't source it alone. See this old post of mine:

Cheaper to try to find a compatible PCIe WiFi/BT card like the Fenvi T-919 and make a cable connect the USB D+D- to the internal USB connector near the SATA ports. AFAIK all the PCIe cards that work with Mac Pro will require this adaptation for the BT to work. Maybe a USB BT dongle will be easier…

You need this to power a 3rd party GPU:

$750 does not seem cheap when the Wireless module is broken.

You will likely need the belkin power cable kit.

I don’t like the idea of this purchase.

See if iPowerResale has a fully working one instead. It might be a lot less hassle. How much money is your time and troubleshooting worth?

WOW! Ironically, iPowerResale.com is selling me a Mac Studio for my Non-Profit! I have had a great experience with them CS wise. They allowed me to cancel a order to upgrade a better configured Studio. My hope is they will help us out with getting the 32 core GPU for $1299 as I didn't see the tax listed on the original closeout and got my hopes up.

I plug them as much as possible. I hope they allow me a consideration for my non-profit.

This 7,1 would be replacing my personal 5,1 as I have so many parts. I devote so much time to Men's recovery my job suffers and this $750 is affordable. Yet. your right.

I am grateful for this. Im better off buying a base mini or M2 MB Air from iPowerResale.com and spend more time on my non-profits Studio I am getting from them. My 5,1 Maxed is getting long in the tooth.

With the 5,1 those are relatively common and you can fix things like wifi and Bluetooth quite easily. These 7,1s are super easy to work on but have many bespoke parts that are difficult to find. :(

Have you any guarantee that the storage on the $750 machine and other parts are properly functioning?

Those are my big concerns.

Unless you really need huge storage capacity internally and ability to go up to 768GB ram (depending on CPU) then sad to say maybe a newer M4 Mac Mini could do better if it is for general use?

Thank you for your empathy and consideration. I devote most of my time to a Mens recovery non-profit and this would be the only avenue for a replacement to my 5,1. I loved building my 5,1 to a formidable machine but being locked on Monterey and constantly being shown I can’t load most apps is getting old. I have more storage than I know what to do with on the 5,1 and a TB3 LaCie 2TB external.

My non-profit is purchasing M1 Mac Studio 64gb 1tb 32 core from ipowerresale.com But, it’s not my personal machine. They have been sooo helpful. Have you orders from them?

We and I will be using DiVinci resolve to render/produce videos of personal recovery stories. We reached the ceiling of our budget with that machine. It seemed like a better choice than the base M4 mini pro as the GPU core and Ram is significantly larger.

I wonder how a $800 budget M4 mini for my personal would compare?

Would this not be the same module in the M2 Mac Pro, and be available as a spare part from Apple?

I couldn't find the part number for the 2023 one, but is not the exact same module, 802.11ac/BT 5.0 versus 802.11ax/BT 5.3, and Apple does not sell it separatedly from the chassis.

Btw, could be a main logic board problem too.

I'd not buy this one without testing it on-hands first, $750 without GPU and with no Wireless working is not cheap as you could think at first glance. Maybe to sell it for parts…

So I called Apple and the guy emailed me this to show the seller. Does bricked effect more than the WIFI and BT? I’m not buying it. A studio is what I’m getting.

What does it mean when Apple support tells you a computer is bricked. I thought “bricked” was an analogy.

Apple support would know a machine is bricked. So they just know it won't start up? No serious issue? what is the common fix?

A fully working one is showing at USD$1799:

That's in good condition - which in my experience is almost perfect externally - and my standards are high. That is with a 580X, 96GB ram and W3245 Xeon W (max 768GB ram). A "fair" condition shows as $1199.

Sounds like you should stay far away from from the $750 machine, it might be $750 spent on something with all sorts of unusual twists and turns. I know you want a computer but this to me is setting off all sorts of alarm bells.

As mentioned by others, keep away from this, unless you are a major tinkerer and want a repair project (which will probably give you headaches and cost you, as a lot of components are bespoke).

Apple can remotely, permanently kill a Mac based on its serial number or rather, based on its lack of a valid serial number. I recall hearing about one of the iMac factories was stealing surplus parts, and making counterfeit iMacs which were sold "off the loading dock". They were all bricked remotely once Apple found out about it.

Similar to flagging a car's VIN when it's written off by an insurer.

So this happened! Thank you for helping me stray from the sketch Mac Pro. I was worried about silicons 24 core gpu coming from a rx6600xt in my 5,1. I have to say, the studio looks better than the 6600 on my 4k LG TV! Apple AI is interesting and I hope to utilize it.

I called Apple support with the serial number of the 7,1, this is what they told me :O. Never heard Apple use the term "Bricked!".
