If you wanted to save some money, installing a new SSD and more RAM would save you a couple thousand dollars. The new SSD would speed up your "on the side" video projects. If not, then get what you can now for longevity. If it's the 13, it will still be an amazing machine.

LOL!!! The RAM is soldered to the logic board, so that's definitely not upgradable. Upgrading the SSD wouldn't speed things up, since the 2015 MBA already shipped with an SSD. It would only provide more space.

Don't forget you can get student discount at the Apple Store and just have your student ID card with you. With the discounted price, you may consider using that saving towards upgrading your memory, RAM or processor. You may check to see if the school store at your college sell Apple products which may be discounted.

I highly recommend checking out authorized Apple resellers. Apple's student pricing is an insult to many students out there compared with non-student pricing offered by many Apple resellers. If you can wait a bit, you'll find some great offers on Black Friday later this year. I bought my maxed out 2016 MBP at ~50% off from Expercom, an authorized Apple reseller.

I think I’ll be going for the 13” MBP (2.8 GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD). Ultimately I feel that the portability makes the 13” superior for my needs, as the larger screen size isn’t important to me (because of my external display), and I don’t need dedicated graphics. Now I just have to wait for those free Beats...

I'm waiting for the back to school promo too, but I think you should really consider base 15". stats are >>> better and the price is the same or even less than your configuration, depending on the country you live in.
How much that configuration for the 13" costs, Apple discount aside?

I think you are correct, I would still go for the baseline 15" the 13" is a great machine, but basically a gen behind... I have both and there is a noticeable difference in speed which keeps me from getting rid of the 15" which I thought I would never keep because of the size, but you easily get used to it, and the large screen is soooo nice....if you get the 13" don't think I'd go for the i7 tbh.......that is a LOT of $ for a 13"....
