After spending almost $1500 on my XS Max I am back to the two year upgrade cycle. Maybe three years if the 2020 phone isn't a big enough upgrade.

How so? Face ID works quite well now. I don't care if it can see through a Halloween mask, that won't get me upgrading.

Everyone thought TouchID gen 1 was amazing, and it turned out to be garbage compared to gen 2 once that came out.

and people actually complain about face id gen 1, nobody complained about touch id gen 1 so there's going to be quite the improvement when face id 2 drops

Myself likely as well. I just don’t see the need to upgrade every year like I used to, and I was one that would stay up past midnight to pre-order. As much as I enjoy the iPhone and the keynotes, the iPhone executes everything I need and more, and I’m thankful for iOS providing five years of support, which in theory, I used to be completely all about the hardware, now for me, it’s all about the iOS experience moving forward.

The vast majority of users on this forum seem to be on

1) An X, Xs, XS Max
2) XR
3) Bought an 8 recently due to the familiar form factor
4) Holding on to 6s/7 due to cost

The rumors seem to suggest that the XS, XS Max and XR will all get somewhat minor upgrades. The XR may go to a dual camera system, the XS Max may get a triple lens camera, but otherwise no major upgrades have been rumored.

If this is the case, will the majority of people on this forum skip upgrading this year? I don't see any other outcome.

I’ll be upgrading to the XS Max in 2 weeks and now with my government discount, I can upgrade to the 2019 at anytime even if I don’t pay 50% of the device I upgraded to before.

No I brought the Max in November so no upgrade for me this year. I'll probably buy a new watch and maybe an iPad Mini or new Mac. I'll probably update my iPhone in 2021 at the earliest when 5G begins to take off.

Anyone else hoping they just ditch the X series and release the iPhone 9 (an upgraded 8 phone). This is what we all want, even though some won't admit it.

Not me. After having my X since launch day, I don’t like the look of the 6/6/7/8 series and if Apple were to revert (which I highly doubt) back to the 6/7/8 series, I wouldn’t be upgrading in September from whatever phone I have then.

Love my sunny yellow XR but I'd upgrade to a newer version of smaller form factor like SE in a heartbeat. Otherwise I'm sticking for a few years to the XR. I prefer the smaller device for ultraportability and ease of one-handed use, and really only upgraded in 2018 to XR over concerns how much longer newer iOS would run on SE. I do love simplicity of Face ID for access, would't like to revert to TouchID: my fingerprints seem to end up unrecognizable in too many scenarios, dry air, extreme cold etc.

I’m skipping this year. I liked the X but I jumped on the chance to pick up the larger size X Max. Perfect sized phone for me and since I have AppleCare, will try to push it for three years

Better angles (when flat on a table for eg.). Faster unlock. Faster auto-retry after a failure. Option to not swipe up.

I think the iPhone 8 is a good phone, but I disagree. A lot of people like the OLED screen and FaceID.

I don’t think he was serious.

pretty much this

cant wait for the annual bazillion didnt-upgrade-self-justification threads crapping on every model except whatever one that person has now, had before, or will have in the future

Can’t wait? o_O

I left both of those behind when I upgraded to the X in 2017.

Most people did. Those who didn’t know they will at a time when it suites them. Those wanting that ugly, dated & screen-inefficient form factor back are ultra stubborn primates :D

that would be like going backwards... Imagine going back to that upper and lower bezel look that's been around since 2007.... Are you also hoping TV makers go back to CRT models with the huge backs?

I was just thinking last night that this might be the first year I don’t upgrade. I really like my XR, and, unless they do something pretty drastic with it, I will be keeping it.

Going to OLED isn’t an option for me (I tried the MAX and the headaches weren’t worth it), so I just hope LCD screens will stick around a few more years.

Maybe.

But I also thought that 2018 would be a year that skipped. :)

Let's see what they come up with. I'll try to hold the line, but if they really come up with something good, it might be irresistible.

My iPhone X was great, but adding Band 71 plus the very nice XS Max screen made it too irresistible.

I have more money in the 2018 models than normal. XS Max 256, plus the new Smart Battery.

That's a lot of money to spend, so I'll really try to hold the line.

But, dammit.... I've said that before!!

if Apple comes up with a dynamic iPhone be it with New Hardware or new capabilities I would consider updating. However if the iPhone just has a better camera, a new color or a speedier SOC I might pass
I’ll be looking at the WWDC in a few weeks to see what the ‘other’ new phones are going to look like

That's actually a really bad analogy. Many like myself find the iphone 6/7/8 design to be superior to the X series for many reasons. The bezel argument went out with tie dye.

I'm on a X and skipped last year. Not sure if I will skip this year or not. I may upgrade to whatever comes out but I'll only know when the time comes closer. I've never gotten on with the larger plus size phones and got rid of both the 6+ and 8+. However now that I have an Apple watch and not be quite so tied to my phone I may give the bigger one a try again. Just a thought at this point as I love the size of the X but my aging eyes like the Max. I also held the Max in the store the other day and for some reason it doesn't feel as big as the Plus phones felt.

To each his own I guess, I for one was happy they finally updated a design that was around since the very first iPhone.

depends on the modem for me. I really hate iPhone XS Max compare to VZW iPhone x

Probably will upgrade watch possibly . Airpods definitely. I’m good with XS Max til 5g.

I would probably wait a year or two before upgrading my iPhone XR. It’s absolutely amazing. There are some minor improvements that would push me towards upgrading.

1. Faster and more power efficient SOC. My interest are especially geared towards greater sustain gaming performance and better computational photography.
2. More battery life. The best thing about the XR is it’s amazing battery life. If they push out an XR that is thicker, possibly one that has the camera flushed with the back panel of the iPhone, and in the process give us 2 x current battery life. That would be awesome.
3. Deeper and wider camera sensor. Hopefully as big a jump as last year, 30%.
4. A 120 hz LCD panel.

Things I really hope they don’t change

1. Single lens rear camera. I absolutely love wide angle portrait. It allows me to tell a fuller story with each shot. Also I find myself using portrait a lot more as it now works in both low light and tight spaces.
2. The same LCD panel in terms of resolution and size, it’s a great choice. Stick to the same retina PPI. It’s practical and sensible. Saves battery, reduces resources requirement which means less heat generation and more fps for people that game on their iPhones, like me. This is the perfect retina screen I was hoping for while I was rocking plus size iPhones.
3. Colors. I really really love Dinoco blue.

I would say my line of thinking is with yours. My iPhone will serve me easily for the next four years, I’m sure I’ll upgrade before that, but it likely won’t be necessary given the performance features. I would rather spend my money on the Apple Watch, AirPods, maybe an iPad mini if updated in the future as well.
