This is what I am really hoping for. If Apple can best the Pixel's absurdly good night mode, I will be pumped. I have a newborn and I want to be able to take good pictures of her in all lighting.

Have you seen night shots from the P30 Pro? It makes the Pixel seem a few generations old.

No, I haven't. I didn't know that. It makes me hopeful though. I read a report back in June that Apple is working on their own version that'll be better than the competition. Whether it makes it on the 2019 iPhones or the 2020 is yet to be seen.

I just buy whatever is nice when I decide the time is right for me to upgrade. I don't overthink it beyond that. It's not a life-changing decision. I'm also totally non-plussed by 5G. I don't think it will improve my experience in the slightest. 4G is plenty fast enough for what I use mobile network data for - Apple Music and Podcasts.

I might upgrade this year or I might not, but the decision will not be based on what may or may not happen a year later. I have better things to worry about than whether or not I have the latest phone

Words of wisdom!
On top of that, if my local providers don’t finally come around with a flat fee for mobile data the only thing 5G will do for me is to empty my plans allowance even quicker- which is really only a benefit for the wireless carrier.

That’s fine but it doesn’t meant his years isn’t great. It’s just not what you want there’s a huge difference.

Good distinction. And that’s basically what it is, others complaining about the 2019 iPhone seems ‘boring or lackluster or not innovative’, but that’s just means that it doesn’t appeal to them, it doesn’t mean it won’t appeal to a demographic out there that sees the value in the 2019 iPhone, which no one really here knows exactly what it has to offer yet, aside from the triple lens camera seems obvious.

Either way, tech forums are also a place where others are very critical of the iPhone (Which is fine), where generally the consumer just selects the storage/color when upgrading, and doesn’t really care about things like A-Series processors/Ram/camera design, etc.

The desire want to buy a new phone is solely up to the buyer themselves. For the longest time I was against upgrading this year but now I am on the fence. I got the XS and got my mom an XS as well in October of last year. After about a week I found an XS Max and returned the XS and was sold and content. Then my attention turned to the XR and guess what? I ran out and bought that phone. There are some of us who have to have the latest and greatest. Also, I have been focusing on photography more and more with my iPhone. I am interested in the camera specs on this years phone. Nevertheless, Apple knows that they have a slew of devoted followers itching to buy their latest and greatest products that they have on deck. 5G or not their devices will be bought up in droves.

I get it... But let's ease up on the optimism a lil bit.

We all honestly need Apple to have another down year with iPhone sales so they can get their act together with pricing.

Don’t you think we should wait to see what Apple actually has in store for pricing before you say get their ‘act together’? Not to mention, I don’t think they’re pricing will be reflected that much this year for changes, look at the competition, has their pricing changed with Samsung? It hasn’t. As I said before in another thread, they’re not necessarily altering the pricing that much, as they will alter their services/trade-ins for the iPhone as mentioned by Tim Cook in January.

I get and to be fair I don't "really" wish any ill will on Apple, however another down year with smart phone sales wouldn't hurt.

Original iPhone’s Edge was truly unusable. My next upgrade was to the 4, which was amazing in comparison. The 5? Holy s***. I guess that’s where we are now for the most part.

I personally don’t need 5g. For anything. I suppose some people do. But maybe it’s a marketing thing instead of necessary.

The speed will amaze people I’m sure. But MacRumors loads instantly for me as things are now.

Coming from an iPhone SE I'm really looking forward to this years upgrade. This is the upgrade I've been waiting for, since it addresses the last shortcoming (camera) that matters to me.
I couldn't care any less about 5G, I'm 99% certain it won't become relevant for mobile devices within the next 5 years, when AR will be mature enough. It's only about coverage, so as long as providers keep improving LTE it's all good. Obviously it's different for laptops/tablets, but that's another topic.
I would've been happy buying an XS, so everything that comes this year on top is an added bonus (I wish the ToF sensor made it into 2019 though). Therefore Im perfectly happy with the value offered. But it's not my primary computing device (not even my secondary), so there's that...

Theres **** tons of people like me out there. What many in this forum describe are luxury problems for the most part. To people like me, upgrading the phone every year is just absurd (we dont have an upgrade program in europe). So I'm sure among these people the new iPhone will sell perfectly fine.

I don’t expect iPhones to suddenly start selling much stronger again. The average consumer gets one every couple of years now and the yearly craze is long gone if it ever existed for the common buyer (highly doubtful anyway). The only strong growth in smartphones is likely some cheap manufacturers eating somebody’s cake in the entry and medium tier market like it is for cheap laptops for years already- both areas in which Apple thankfully doesn’t participate in the race to the bottom.

The market is saturated and really groundbreaking technology that would stir up the market massively is not in sight. Just incremental improvements from evolution to evolution.
