Hey guys,

I got a 2020 iPad Pro 11" last week and noticed the space grey aluminum finish was chipping off the front in not one, but two corners out of the box. The first one didn't bother me that much and I may have let it slide, but the second one is particularly noticeable especially under light and was very hard to unsee once I saw it and became quite annoying. I've started the return process for it and have ordered a silver one as a replacement, which I think will hide such damage better.

Has anyone noticed anything similar on theirs?

Thanks!

As someone who used to have an iPhone 4 with some scuffs on the antenna, I think scuffs will still be noticeable on that colour

You're in your right to replace it, but for such a tiny little scuff on what I assume was an otherwise functional tablet, it wouldn't be enough to me if it's only visual

These devices are very expensive, so I don't blame you for returning it. It should at least not have chips out of the box.

I went with silver for this reason and because I liked the color slightly better.

The space grey color tends to crack and chip. Return it for a silver version.

Yeah, I've owned several iPads and iPod touches in the past (never had an iPhone before oddly enough) and they all arrived in perfect condition. This is my first Apple device which came with visible defects so maybe I've been fortunate up until now lol. I prefer the silver too though it wasn't available originally but I'm hopeful it'll come out of the box without any issues.

My first one had a little scratch in the upper left corner where the glass is let in to the frame, which was really annoying because it was reflecting in the sunlight, so I ordered a new one via Amazon (it was also a little bit cheaper :D ) and send my original one back to Apple.

It arrived and I found a dust speck under the screen and a scratch on the frame, so I contacted Amazon and they directly gave me a part refund without replacing it, but everything what I could see was the dust speck, so I called Apple and they shipped an express replacement for me. (I have Apple Care+)

I've received my replacement from Apple yesterday and I have to say, finally, this is it! :) Perfect screen, no dust, no scratches. Also this one has a brighter display than the one before. :) On the other hand with the refund from Amazon I made a really really good deal, but that was not my intention, the Amazon guy just refunded without even asking, so it is okay for my consience.

So I finally got my silver replacement after a long delay and it appeared to have some scuffs/dings on the out of the box as well. However, I was able to get rid of them unlike on the space grey and now it looks perfect! Hopefully the silver colour holds up better over time.

Happened to me with a MBA - maybe we're sold refurbished items without being told. Of course, exchange it for a new one!

Do you have any proof?

I write "maybe". I wondered how that defect could have made it through quality control. Dent looked like a someone smashed the frame against a hard edge.

Also, there were clear dots of spit on the screen which have not been cleared off properly. Even though the computer has been packaged like fresh and unused from the factory.

Anyways, no questions were asked when exchanging the device.

After using my silver replacement for a day, I noticed a dead pixel near the bottom right corner, to further add to my dismay (see attached photo). Needless to say, this one is being sent back as well, and a third one is on the way from Walmart.

Has Apple's quality control deteriorated over the recent past or am I just really unlucky to have been sent two lemons? Never had such problems with any previous Apple products out of the box in the past so this is kind of alarming to me. ?

Apples quality control has been lacking for years considering the prices they charge and the image they portray of themselves. That said they are churning out millions of devices so defective products can slip the net. I'd prefer them to slow down a little and do better quality checks on the end of the production line. I genuinely think they allow a certain amount of defects to go through as "most" people won't notice/return.

My opinion is jaded though as I've had alot of bad experiences with Apple products. I'm "unlucky" like that ?‍♂️. This is one of the reason I never bought the newer designed ipad pros despite wanting them because I'd likely end up with a bent one! Still waiting on a better structurally designed version.

I just found a dead pixel on mine as well..... It’s extremely small and in landscape top center. I don’t think I am going to streas to much about it as everything else on the iPad looks good! Don’t want to take a chance sending back and get a replacement that’s got more issues. Still a tad annoying!

my first iPad pro 2020 had a defect on the usb port. at first i didn't wanna go through the hassle and waiting to get a replacement but this was a very expensive machine so i went ahead and sent it back to apple. refunded, and got a replacement a week later. perfect condition.

Mines perfectly balanced. Also heard of couple cases, where the power button was significantly loose.

3rd iPad, another damaged/defective one. Dent right behind the top left speaker grill which you can easily feel when holding it in landscape mode.

? How did your iPad exchanging adventure end? Did you get another replacement?

After my next one arrives damaged this week (I’m calling it now), I’m probably gonna abandon getting a new Pro altogether and get myself a Galaxy Tab 6 instead.?

When you get the tab make sure not to use it in low light with a dim screen. I’ll take a scratch or small nick/dent over an uneven screen experience any day of the week.

All gens have had issues, but I think the Air 2 and iPad 4 were probably least problematic. My 3rd Gen Pro was problematic with touch screens here and there and cellular models bending too often, (mine has like 3 super tiny micro dents on the side,) It probably came that way as I keep the iPad safe and sound on a few microfiber cloths. But the point being... Apple needs to do 2 things: use 7000 Aluminum and figure out how to go back to doing a better job anodizing space-gray devices.

I personally am fine with the aluminum we have on all iPads, macs, and whatnot, but I am not fine with stupid engineering and design.
