I’d rather buy a brand new Air than a refurbed Pro. Ironically that is what I did.
I bought a refurbished 10.5 pro maybe a year and half or more ago and it’s been really good at a great discount..they really do a good job with their refurbished items, couldn’t tell from new. See what happens next year with the Air, should have many left over parts from the pros and more ram…Apple is very good about keeping designs close to use up past inventory then they move on…they actually make the most bang for the buck than anyone.

I’m sure they are great but then not everybody needs a Pro iPad. I’d sooner buy a new Air than a refurb personally.

Not everyone needs an iPad Pro, but the better screen and speakers are things that people who don't need a Pro can appreciate. Hence being able to get those features and 128GB for around the price of a 64GB Air.

It’s all subjective though as I said. I’d rather have the Air for the advantages that has. Speakers, screen and storage aren’t an issue for me.

At the end of the day, an Ipad is an Ipad. The suffix doesn't mean much except more flashy (120Hz display). Yes, the M1 chip is great but so is the current chip in the iPad, even the A12 chip in the 2018 pro. I don't get any more abilities on my 2020 pro compared to the 2021 air, software is limited :( but I'm not sure why apple does this.

As far as I know, the Air's only advantages are color bodies, Touch ID (which is not insignificant), and a little faster at simpler tasks but slower at complex tasks.
Your right, but i would rather have the newer, more efficient 5 nm A14 bionic chip with its more advanced neural engine rather than the almost 3 year old A12X/Z chip (they are very good chips though, but old gen).
