Would Apple make the next MacBook a premium model again? It could return to an entry level offering to compete with chromebooks.
I don’t see a point in offering a standard “MacBook” at this point. The Air already covers that portion of the market, and is only a slight bump to a 13 inch MacBook Pro, without big gaps between it and the rumored 14 and 16 inches.

They bumped the 16" MBP to 16/512 as the base config. I don't see that changing.

Personally, I'd like to see a 15/16" MBA for consumers who may want a larger display, but don't necessarily need the beefier CPU.

Now that the refresh is coming out, there may be some new configurations. Who knows.

If a Macbook Air M1 8GB RAM can crush a Macbook Pro 16" Intel in lots of tests, then it might be smart of Apple to have Macbook Pro 16" MX with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD as a base model. So you can buy a 16" at a lower price. If you need more power, you can choose to do it.

The new Macbook Pro dont have the touchbar that had a $200 price increase. The new screen will probably give a price increase.

So, exactly the pricing of the Macbook Pro 14" & 16" will be interesting to see how Apple does.

Base model.
Macbook Air M1 8GB RAM 256GB.
Macbook Pro 14" MX 8GB RAM 256GB.
Macbook Pro 16" MX 8GB RAM 256GB.

They'd get a 13" Air. And yeah, it'd be a new category.
The Air is a less capable and lower end MacBook. I believe that the 13” MacBook Pro is Apple’s second best seller. I don’t understand why you think it would be a good idea to eliminate the smaller high-end MacBook. I don’t think there is any chance Apple will do this.

Is Macbook Air M1 "less capable" and "lower end" than Macbook Pro M1?

Can you elaborate on that?

100 nits less brightness. Apple claims better speakers but this is disputed. Studio quality mics. It has a fan to keep from throttling. The M1 Air definitely throttles. It has a significantly larger battery and several hours more battery life. There is some claimed difference with HDR but that might be a mistake on the spec page.

In the future I expect the MacBook Pro to have 3 or 4 TB/USB4 ports and additional ports. I don’t expect that the Air will get the same.

The majority of users get by with the Macbook Air M1. There are lots of tests on Youtube that show the small differences between Air M1 and Pro M1.

Then you can spend $300 upgrading the Air M1, or a gift for your wife or just buy beer for that money.

I think we will end up with...
13" Air (current design, this will be Apple's "cheap" laptop)
14" Air
14" MBP
16" MBP

Considering how capable the Air is, Apple doesn't really need a low-end two-port MBP.

Made this just for fun based on rumours and some speculation (although need help adding the right specs)…

Fuming that these fake computers won’t let me put the best chip in the 14”.
