Time for Apple to start eating some of these costs. There’s been precedent for this in the past — component price increases but keeping the device at the same price.

They’re starting to price themselves out of the market in some product lines, and sales are being affected, based on their recent quarterly call.

They’re a $2 trillion company. Time to take one for the team — the loyal customers who aren’t multi-trillionaires. “We didn’t raise prices, and we think you’re gonna love it.”

"One of the new production processes is the use of a two-stack tandem structure, which has two emission layers, thus doubling brightness and quadrupling OLED display lifespan. All of Apple's iPhones use a single-stack structure, and Apple's rationale for requiring two-stack panels for iPads is that tablets tend to be used for longer periods."

My first thought was that Apple were going overboard. But obviously the statistics they collect from there devices indicates there is a method to there madness.
Still use a gen 2 ipad as a rotating photo display. Needs to be always plugged in due to the state of its battery.

Dont be so dramatic.

Americans could use different messaging apps if they wanted so no one here is locked in to iMessage.
I guess I don’t know why we Americans would use something else. It would open us up to security issues. iMessage works fine. I don’t think most of us give a damn.

They want to keep the number of zones the same so that e.g. a movie doesn't look worse on the 11". Which means the zones must be physically smaller than on the 12.9". And apparently that's too difficult.
Videos arguably look worse, brightness and contrast wise, on the 11”. I don’t think that’s the reason why it didn’t get MiniLED.

What's the big deal? I don't mind a $20 price increase for OLED ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They'll probably cut costs on the SSD or RAM speed or something

I couldn’t care less about OLED but also would not care for an iPad that goes even higher in price than it currently is. The iPad is (to me) an overpowered even bigger iPhone with the option to have an overpriced stylus.

I am okay with OLED on my phone because the screen is on only when it needs to be, then it’s locked. Still, after a year of use the pill on the bottom and the status bar icons are burnt in. iPads are used in more static apps and so are Macs and I don’t think I’d buy a Mac/iPad with OLED, and especially if that’s a more expensive option.

A movie already looks worse, brightness and contrast wise, on the 11”.
Yeah, but if they go to the trouble of improving it with mini-LED, they’d probably want it to be at the same level as the 12.9”. At least that’s what I believe to be the most plausible explanation why they haven’t implemented mini-LED on the 11”. They had already talked about that it wasn’t easy to make the zones sufficiently small for the 12.9”.

Why couldn’t they cut the same LCD sheets to a smaller size, thus keeping the same sized zones? Just like with the 14” and 16” MBPs.

I considered upgrading my wife's iPad Pro 12,9-inch with the next release. But considering how all pricing in the EU is already bumped without any price increase in the US, I suppose this will make it a no-go for us. She loves the iPad Pro as her primary device, she is currently using the first iPad Pro 12,9-inch with Face ID. But these prices are getting rather ridiculous for what you are getting.

It's an effect that the screen shows the brightness looks too bright with the text. My m1 has it worse than my older ipp 12" has. Some people might not notice it.
Oh THAT. I know what you mean. I didn't know the word for it.

Easy to see that you don’t have one. Miniled is great of the iPad.
Had one and returned it, not worth it in the slightest and you know it.

Blooming round the edges of the display is way too distracting and if it was Samsung or someone else the media would have made a big deal out of it.

I’d be worried about burn in on these panels , seen so many horrible examples of it and 9/10th the manufacturers say it’s within tolerances and won’t do a refund or even replacement
