"Pop the glass off with a suction cup and give it a rub."

Dude, is that safe????lol...I dont think I have a suction cup anyway.....

It might be dust, I ran the pixel test again, and it changes colors (its blue against red, etc.)

Ya it is safe, just be very careful and do it in a sterile environment (you don't want to get more dust down there). Best to put on some latex gloves and use a lintless cloth to remove the dust.

Mine's great. A lot of good ones are out there. If you get a bad one, return it. Don't settle for anything less than total satisfaction from these amazing machines!

Well, I returned the one that had a bad pixel, but the one that I came home with doesnt have any bad pixels or a gradient problem, but has the slight yellowing at the corners problem...ugh...guess ill have to see just how much that bothers me before I return it...

24 " Imac Gradient Test

If you want to test if your iMac has the issue. Try this it's simple. Remember to turn brightness down all the way and maximize window to cover full 24" screen.;)

Can someone please link to somewhere that lets us 24" iMac owners test for the gradient issue? I would like to do the test as soon as my new one comes in, so I can return it if need be.

Thanks!

So you have gone from a problem that was not noticeable until you where informed about it, and a monitor that had dust, (that I told you how to easily fix), to a computer with a problem that is obviously noticeable..

Nice..

with all due respect, you don't know whether it was dust or not. It might have been genuine dead pixels.

Is that supposed to be some kind of smart ass slam or something dude?

I didnt notice the dead pixel (close examination with a jewelers loop verifed that it was a dead pixel) until the third or fourth day of having it and I started running the various tests that I had read about. Once I found the problem, I took it the Apple store, if it was dust, I would have been happy with them cleaning it out, no problem. It was THEIR decision to replace it after taking it in the back. The yellow tint in the corners is slight enough that it doesnt bother me, (yet anyway), and it appears that the 24" imacs at the apple store I was at today had the same problem.

"and a monitor that had dust, (that I told you how to easily fix),"

I considered this, but I have no suction cup to do this with, and to be perfectly honest, I think it very foolish to mess around like that with a brand new machine that is under warranty.

In any case, if I but a brand new computer, I rather expect it to have no problems at all, at first anyway. I can live with dead or stuck pixels after a year so, but not in a brand new machine.,

Hi all, I've just registered to the forum but lurked for a long time :) I'm writing from Italy (please apoligizes for my bad english) and I only have a question about alu iMac 24" and all the series of issues it has: if I buy a refurbished one it will be problem-free or not?
I'd like someone who recently bought a refurbished can answer this question; like everyone I want a iMac without problems and the other good thing buying a refurbished one is the lower cost.
I have a good experience with a friend of mine: he was looking for a mac and I tell him to buy a refurbished white iMac 24". He paid 1700 euros instead of more than 2400 euros for the brand-new, but received quite the top bto configuration (500gb hd, 2 gb ram, nvidia 7600), except the cpu, c2d 2,16 ghz, so I think also this is another thing to look at refurbished iMac.
Thank you and bye.

Hot dog! Just to make sure, I just ran the "Gradient Test" on my 24" iMac. It is perfect, just as I knew it was! Man, I knew my karma was due for something good soon, glad it was this!
Condolences to all who have real gradient issues. It is a spendy product, so to not have what you paid for would stink.
My thought would be if you have an Apple Store within 150 miles of you, drive down there and show them in person. I'd hate to have to take care of this problem via the phone/mail.

I decided to take mine back to the apple store tonight. The gradient issue was harder to see in the lighting of the apple store, but it was apparent enough that the manager replaced the imac without any argument. So, thumbs up for apple service.

My new imac looks wonderful. The gradient issue is gone. yay!

After having it for a day, I began noticing the gradient issue IS there, albeit very slight. I can't see it when nothing is moving on the screen, or even when there is a solid color (though I have noticed some dark patches, amost like screen burn). I only see it when I move a window with white in it from one side to the next, then it's quite noticeable.

So, do I return the second imac and try for a third, or just learn to live with it? The apple store is almost 40 miles away, so going out there is kind of a pain in the ass.

Lord, I wish I'd never read this thread. I probably wouldn't have noticed to begin with.

I know how you feel. I have a "slight" gradient, I think anyway. It is kind of hard to tell...I also have some screen bleed near the bottom also.

If I hadnt of read these boards I never would have noticed either.

I dont think either of my problems are worth taking this second machine back (first one was returned due to a stuck pixel almost dead center).

I think I have a stuck pixel also. I've only ever seen it when I ran the pixel test posted upthread.

Maybe I should take it back. The worst that'll happen is that I'll get a new one (or they'll refuse to exchange it again).
