Hi there.

Just want to say I recently upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard Prerelease about a week ago and I don't have had any problem since then. I still have a few glitches when the graphic system is overloaded but it recovers eventualy and my iMac has not been frozen until now (with a moderate speed setup in SMCFanControl).

Maybe just lucky, maybe there was anything wrong with Leopard.

My white 2006 20" iMac is having screen issues which were diagnosed by Apple as failed video card, which requires both a video and logic board replacement. $900. I put in SMC Fan Control, and that seems to have helped (at least for now). I'm out of warranty, so I'm not looking forward to eating such a large bill. After research, the conclusion I see is that the iMac (white especially) doesn't dissipate heat well, and also the white specifically had some bad capacitors.

Lessson learned: Only buy an iMac with applecare, and sell it before the 3 years is up. Period.

Hi everyone!

I've been having some graphic glitches on my 24" iMac (late 06, 2.16 C2D, 1GB RAM, NVIDIA 7300 GT 128 MB) and I'm really starting to worry.

I think that the problem started to happen around the time I installed Leopard on it. I even upgraded to 3GB RAM to make sure that that wasn't the problem but no go, I'm still getting the occasional glitch (well, sometimes it's more than occasional.

I'm afraid that my GPU is toast because if that's the case am I suppose to just throw the iMac in the trash? Keep in mind I live in Portugal where there is still no official Apple Store and my 2 year waranty has just ended in October 08.

What are my possibilities? I already had to replace the Superdrive (stopped working) and the hard drive (needle was clicking constantly on the HD) but it was all under warranty.

I'm afraid this time it's "bye bye" to a 2000€ computer that is just 2 years and 3 months old.

Here's a screenie so you can see what it's all about, this screenshot was taken just 15 minutes ago.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Nym, you still have the problem?? I have Imac 24 (Late 2006), some strange lines started to apear, when navigating the internet, or playing dvd...My Mac is still on warranty, let's see what apples have to say...

PS: I am from Portugal..Porto.

I'll update my issues with my white iMac. Took it to Apple, and the said the HDD is failing, and that although diagnostics don't show it, the lines say the video card is failing.

I cracked the case and replaced the HDD myself -- there was certainly an issue, because the system is back to being snappy(tm). I also installed fan control a week ago, and haven't seen any lines since (of course, the fans are also spinning faster now). When I changed the drive, I cleaned out a lot of the dust build-up.

After I installed the drive, I booted off an external drive -- which didn't have SMC fan control loaded -- and the lines came back. When I was done rebuilding my new drive with Leopard and added SMC fan control, the lines are gone again.

Bottom line -- it's too hot inside the plastic case. Whether it's "just a matter of time" before it failes or not I don't know. But SMC fan control will at least buy you some time.

Fixed with new 7300 GT card

Owners of the 2006 24" iMac should not despair: the glitches and crashes are caused by NVIDIA's 7300 GT card (ROM version 3021). The cure is a new 7300 GT (ROM version 3022) or a 7600 GT.

First off, my post only applies to the 24" iMac models from late 2006. Not the 17" or 20" models or the later (black with glass) iMacs. If you have a 24" 2006 iMac with video glitching, your problems will only get worse until you get that graphics card replaced. Still got it under AppleCare? Run, don't walk, to an authorized repair shop and get it fixed! Otherwise, be prepared to buy a new graphics card and spend hours fixing it yourself or pay someone else to do it for you.

welovemacs.com has the 7300 GT and 7600 GT cards available

$200 or $300, your choice.

techdc.com has a wonderful (but brief) article on the graphics card replacement process, complete with pictures

I used that article as a starting point for fixing my iMac. Their pictures are better than the ones I shot, but they didn't include any other details of the process. If there's interest, I'll post the 11 step process I used and perhaps that will save somebody else some time and frustration.
