24" iMac.... what does 30% Brighter Really Mean?

I'm confused. What does "Brighter" mean? Would this be too bright? I do a lot of color proofing and although I don't expect exact color from the display, "30% brighter" would not necessarily be a good thing for me.

So, what does it mean? Is it literally 30% brighter than..... what? The 20" iMac? My old CRT monitor? Can I make it not brighter at all? :cool:
 
It means that mine is running at about 35% brightness, and it's still twice as bright as my 22" ACD on full. Just adjust it to whatever you like.
 
Thanks for the info, Skunk. I think I'm still undecided between the 20" & the 24", and so am looking for excuses why the 24" would be the wrong choice for me. And also wondering why it is so bright.

I've done a forum search for 20" vs. 24" display & did not find much. Anyone know of any discussions (or can give advice) about the subject?

If you have the room and can afford it get the 24". And it is brighter because it is bigger so they can fit more stuff in it ;)
 
Any other time I would boast about the 24", but considering your needs, I would suggest the 20". The 20" has a professional quality display; the same used in the 20" ACD. The 24" is beautiful, but it's not considered "Pro". I'm not too picky about color, so the 24" is perfect for me.

Is the 24" panel not the one rumoured to be going into the ACD?
Regardless, the 24" is pretty nice and the brightness is fantastic; 1080p looks great on it. :)
 
one thing i'd like to add is that at night, my 20" is TOO bright for me sometimes. it just hurts to look at. i shudder to think what the 24" would be like for me...
 
A bit OT, I think you should definitely wait until WWDC on June 11, and who knows what kind of iMac upgrades could come...

I find my 17" iMac is a fair bit brighter than my 2007WFP. I tend to turn the brightness down to balance out when I'm doing split screen video work.
I have found myself keeping my DS Lite's brightness at 3/4, and my iPod 80gb at 50%. Short of a direct sunbeam smashing into my screens I'm happy with them not at their max.
 
My 24" is extremely bright. It doesn't burn my eyes though. But it's way brighter than any monitor I've ever used. Even if I wanted to lower the brightness I couldn't though, my iMac hums when the display is dimmed.

I have heard of that problem with several of the 24"s, nearly all of them. My 20" has the perfect brightness, and when I turn it down it does not hum. Just thought i'd throw that out there.
 
If you have ever heard of candle power it is the same concept

The 24" imac has 30% more candlas (units of light/like candle power) per a certain area than the other screen

Well, I'd like to add that my 24" imac doesn't hum at the lowest brightness. I got mine last month.
 
A lot of 24"s don't hum, but a surprising amount do. Just do a search, and you'll see that there are tons of iMac owners with the dreaded hum. I've never once had the desire to turn down the brightness of my screen - in fact, even when you do it, it doesn't even make it that much dimmer. Don't worry about the hum - if you buy the iMac and it hums just take it back.

Also, with my experience, I believe that the flawless, perfect iMac does not exist! Every single iMac I have encountered (in the apple store, at futureshop, at bestbuy, plus the one's I've had) have all had some sort of defect: dead pixel(s), noisy superdrive, humming sound, whining sound, bad ram, bad hard drive...etc. I had to settle on this iMac because I was so sick of returning it. It has the hum, but it doesn't bother me. If I lowered the screen brightness it would drive me mad though! Until someone shows me an iMac with zero problems, then my position still stands. The perfect iMac is probably out there - and a lot of people may think they have perfect iMacs, which is good, but the truth is that not everyone knows these defects. In fact, there are probably tons of people who dont know about dead pixels, and who probably woudlnt be bothered if they had one anyway. So to them, their machine is perfect. To me though....

My 24" is perfect, and displays none of the issues that you cite, nor any others. It just works, and does so beautifully and silently.

I also have a 24" and the screen is flipping bright. I use a program called Nocturn @ night. But the screen really is awesome. One downside it does hum whent eh brightness is lowered.

This is my second mac within 5 years and did not have return either of them. I ran a pixel test (I do this with all my computers) and it has no hum. I really can't find anything wrong with it so I'd say I have this perfect mac you're alluding to. Unlike some of my PC laptops and desktops, I've found nothing wrong with the worksmanship. This mac is a dream..it's literally the best value purchase I've made in a long time (when it comes to computers).

If your mac is too bright at night, you should turn on a lamp or provide another source of light. With your screen as the only source of light, it will put a strain on your eyes and give you headaches - this goes for any monitor or TV.
