My 24" iMac hums too so I turned the brightness up to max and then use a program called Shades to dim it to where I like it. Now, not only can be dimmed lower than the display control allows (which was still very bright for me) but it doesn't hum either! I knew about both of these issues before I got the 24" but with this program fixing both issues, it makes using it that much more enjoyable, and I DEFINITELY made the right choice going with this instead of the 24" Give a couple years or so, and 24" might be one of the smaller monitors on the market as 30"+ becomes more common!

I do not disagree with any of you saying the iMac is an incredible machine - it is - and it's the best computer I've ever owned! However, I'm just saying that although the machine is incredible, I have yet to experience a "perfect" one that many of the members on this forum refer to. I dont consider the one I have now to be defective - but I acknowledge that it has the screen hum. I would recommend the 24" iMac to everyone - but I would tell them to load a dead pixel checker IN STORE before taking it home - otherwise you might have to fight them at the apple store to change it.

Did you mean that you're glad you went with the 24 instead of the 20? I am also!

Blunt truth from me.

I own both the 24" Imac C2D and the 20" Imac CD.

30% brighter = "meh" -- here is why.

The contrast ratio and color depth on the 20" is FAR BETTER than on my 24". Give me a dimmer 24" with better contrast and color any day.

Add to that, 30% brighter might mean more to me if I were outside in the sun or working in changing light conditions (laptop) -- this Imac may be slim - but it certinally isn't going to be prone to sun / ambient light bleaching, because I'm not going to be outside with it.

If you don't believe me, go to a store with both the 20" and 24" on display, and use the dashboard -- take a look at the "accuweather widget". Look at the "Daily low temperature" You will see it is almost impossible to see on the 24" regardless of contrast / brightness settings -- and CLEARLY visible on the 20" panel with any of the contrast / brightness settings.

Consider that I may have gotten a bum panel - but I have seen this on other Imacs in the store too.
