I've been reading the 20 v 24 inch thread and wonder what people think of the differences between the two base 24 inch models.

0.26GHz might not be worth £225 (US$450) but does the better video card and bigger standard HD make it worthwhile - or is it just a vanity model to persuade people to open their wallets a little bit wider.

(As a total aside, typing in that processor speed reminded me that my first PC was had a mere 0.025GHz processor)

For the difference in processor speed, it is not worth that much, but what are your needs for graphics cards and Hard Drive storage, like what are your regular actions that might require a higher end graphics card or larger hard drive? And if you are a gamer, then the graphics card and processor speed might be helped by the 3.06, but if you are not, then my best suggestion would be the 2.8

Lots (and I mean LOTS) of photos and photo editing, and a moderate amount of video editing.

I also have to use Windows quite a lot for the freelance work I do, and while that runs quite nicely on my 2.16GHz MacBook I do rather resent the drive space that my VMs are taking up.

I would see about upgrading the Hard Drive individually and see if you can get it for a cheaper price than the 3.06

I went for the 3.06 with the 8800GS card and if I'm honest, the main reason I shelled out the extra money over the cost of a 2.8 + 8800GS BTO option was because it took the machine over the "magical" 3Ghz speed that Apple promised years ago for the G5s. I doubt very much that there is much real-world difference between the two processors but if you can afford it, why not? If not, then you will still be getting a very capable machine

Ditto - I wanted the 3GHz label.

The only issue with the 3.06GHz one is the HDD. I have had a ton of that model of HDD, and they always fail after about a month of use.

If you game a lot, games in the future might require minimum 3GHz speed. That might make a difference in the decision.

Nothing much at all

Its all bragging rights.
the 200mhz wont even make that much of a difference in gaming
my old amd gaming comp that is a dual core 2 ghz runs assassins creed at 40 frames on highest quality at 1280x1024 resolution with a 8600 gts 256 mb graphics card

2,8 GHz/8800GS or 3,06 GHz/8800 GS will be a difference of 5 FPS or so in games, maybe less. The 3,06 GHz just isn't that much faster than the 2,8 and it will certainly NOT last any longer than the 2,8 GHz.

For that reason, I've ordered a 2,8 GHz/500 GB/8800 GS iMac last week. I still have to decide what to get with the saved money, 4 GB of memory or AppleCare. I think it will be extra memory. :)

you cannot seriously say that the 200 MHz difference will give you 5 extra frames. lol, you would be lucky to see a 3 frame difference and more than commonly only see a 1 or 2 frame difference.
seriously the 3 Ghz model is just bragging rights for apple because they finally got a 3 Ghz processor in their imac.

Cant wait to see what apple will do when they get a 3 Ghz processor in the macbook pro
Party Time!!!!!! :apple: :D

I'm exactly in the same position, should I buy the 2.8 or 3.06 model, I would both configure them with the 8800GT GPU and a 750GB HDD.
I think the difference must be noticeable right, especially in the future?

In motion the future always is

Its a very small difference
it takes a real big pc freak to see the difference
in the future there wont be that much of a difference when it comes to speed differences
in 3 years when you prob buy a new one there will be probably a 3 ghz octacore processors
well maybe

but most people buy the 3 ghz model just because it is reassuring that you have the fastest available model at the moment

But the difference must be bigger than the difference between the 2.66ghz 20inch and the 24inch 2.8ghz, or am I wrong here?

If you have the extra money buy the 3GHz. Think of all the extra cool things you can do with 200Mhz. It's also worth a few watts to upset the global warming crowd :)

I was facing the same decision. I decided to order online and get the 2.8 and upgrade the video card for $135 and the hard drive to a 500GB for $45.

I don't think $180 is worth the 200 MHz

Oh.... see my new thread... FedEx lost my iMac....

The difference is small, and will always be small. :) Nothing wrong with buying the 3.06 though, just not for the reason that it will last longer because it will not.
