Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably priced external sound cards. I looked at Griffins iMic. Any others to consider. The popping is driving me crazy.
Kyan

I use the hotusb1 usb sound for my Grado headphones. Works perfectly and dead silent.

Sometimes you can pick them up for about the same price as the Griffin.

search evil-bay for hotusb1

Possible fix for tinny sound problem

Hi to all

I have a brand-new, three-week-old iMac 24" 3.06 (early 2009 version), which has developed the same intermittent fault described in this thread: tinny portions of sound (3-5 seconds long) in all applications (iTunes, DVD Player, VLC, QuickTime). It has been driving me nuts! I called AppleCare but they weren't much help. A potential fix for this that I have stumbled across is to go into Audio MIDI Setup, select Properties For: Built-in Output, and change the format from 44000 to 96000. I am test-running it at 96000 at the moment and it seems to have fixed the problem - for the moment, at least! I think this is a software fault, rather than hardware (I am loathe to send off my iMac for repair just three weeks into its life!), so hopefully an update to the operating system will solve the fault once and for all and I can go back to 44000, which is what the setting is supposed to be. I'll let you know if this "fix" turns out to be illusory. If you still have the same problem, please give this "fix" a try (you could also try the 48000 setting) and let me know how you get on.

Cheers

I have the same problem with a brand new iMac 24"

yes, Liquidatore, the fix you suggest does cure the problem PARTLY on 96 000, it is still there but less apparent.

it's all very well bringing the machine back to the shop for a replacement, but that's a bummer AND I have all my iTunes, Photos, etc on the current one. will they copy my files from the old to the new one.

I can't say I'm not disappointed with Apple too.

Incidentally an iTunes file I downloaded (1812 Ouverture by Tchaikovsky, Royal Philharmonic) has two faults in it: intermittent sound. not very good Apple !

iMac issues, issues, issues!

Hey, does anyone who has the 24in iMac have any problem with the sound from the speakers? Sometimes when I listen to music on iTunes I will then get a screeching sound for a few seconds then it will go off. Anyone that can help I would appreciate it. I bought it refurb about 3 weeks ago, so its newer.
Thanks

:eek:Well, I don't have that issue, BUT my 2 year old iMac literally wigged out. Yep... started with the logic board, then the entire hard drive. It got so wild, that APPLE CARE sent 2 big guns who drove over an hour away to my house (on them), and STILL they could not fix it! Go figure. Glad I had Apple Care... Got a BRAND NEW iMac! :p

Possible fix for tinny sound problem - get sound card changed

Hi, Anthony. In the end, I just had to take my iMac to the repair centre and have the sound card changed. That has solved the problem once and for all, without me having to change to another new iMac. Best of luck!
