There are many theories and I'm NO battery expert, so I cannot challenge any of it. I can share what has worked for me on my MacBook Pro and in fact all the iOS devices as well.
entire 2020, I've used my MacBook as a desktop hooked up to the monitor; thankfully for me and my setup, the power switch was very easy to access; All I've done is turn off the switch everyday in the evening when I close work and turn it back on in the morning when I want to use it; Tap the mouse and it worked just as a desktop.
battery usage has been stable, battery life has been between 85 and 80% all this while as per coconut battery.
And, everynight, the MacBook lost about 10 to 15% of battery; I've kept power nap = ON, so I expect it wake up once in a. while and download mails or updates as necessary.
cannot complain really, after all my mabcook is nearly 5 years old now. and still works super quick. touchwood !!
