OR.. you can go to www.systemrequirementslab.com , its a website that tells if software mostly games will be compatible on your comp. Just click on Can you run it? and itll do its thing and then it gives you a report and it tells which gfx card you have. If it says XT then you have an XT.

ok, LOL, that didnt help the matter....our survey says, "XT" ding ding ding ding!

Im off to bed now. Have fun working out whats going on lol :D (p.s, before i sleep. just went back into tiger. profiler says its a pro. lol. ponder some more, ill check back in the morning)

was it the imac update that did it?

sorry for the noob question but could the update apple released yesterday have upped the speeds of the 2600 pro to match the 2600 xt:confused:

I have already been thinking that this could be an overclocked version like the sapphire hd 2600 pro. Maybe that could be making windows think it is an XT.

That would be totally weird and awesome if Apple was giving the wrong info.

There is still this tingling sensation in me that refuses to believe that Apple has left its former practice of scraping the floors at Ati and nVidia...

by the way is that good that it is a 2600 xt instead of a pro? Not much of a ati man

Usually goes something like this if a 2600 had all these options:

2600LE (light edition)
2600 (regular)
2600pro
2600XT (eXTreme)
2600XT-PE (eXTreme Platinum Edition)
2600XTX (eXTreme-?)

The only changes that were made were to the drivers in OS X. I didn't change the card settings. It wouldn't apply to Windows either.

Apple video cards generally use a different ROM than PC.

This would likely change the way it is identified in Windows, especially by a Windows ATI driver.

Also, we have been comparing the 2600 Pro desktop version to the other video options available. 'Mobility' versions are generally much slower. Possibly, the 2600 Pro is the same speed or even faster than the 2600 XT Mobility.

Well its either a problem with the driver sig, apple made a mistake, or your just lucky. The thing that's weird is that on tiger it says pro. Which card would be better anyway, a mobility 2600 XT or desktop 2600 pro?

It is an XT because that program scans your hardware. Unless the iMac has developed a mind of its own and is outsmarting other programs, idk how the program could be 'stumped' if you will. Someone please enlighten me if im wrong.

My thought is that the specifications don't really match either one because it is already overclocked and has GDDR3 memory. But that is pretty much totally out of my butt.

All that we need now is the clock speeds of the card now. Here's the desktop version. If it is the Mobility HD2600 XT then expect it to outperform the 8600M GT.

HD2600 Pro
Core: 550 MHz
Memory: 700 MHz

Some possible explanations:
1) The Boot Camp driver is misidentifying the chip
(which version of Boot Camp are people booting with when they see this?)

2) The Apple custom ROM is misidentifying the chip
(in the About This Mac Video (More Info...) Graphics/Display info what is the Chipset Model & Vendor description?

3) The chip is over-clocked some how and is fooling the Win32 identifiers
(I don't think this is a likely cause)

4) (You won't like this one)
ATI had a pile of 2600 PRO chips they wanted to unload and offered them to Apple CHEAP with the promise that once they cleared those out they would start supplying 2600 XTs at a better than normal price (or ATI couldn't fill Apple's needs for 2600 XTs so Apple settled for cheap 2600 Pros until ATI could fill their demand) Once ATI is able to supply Apple's needs a 'product refresh' is announced.
This doesn't seem likely either since if Apple wanted to split supply they would have just offered the 2600 XT as a BTO option with a wait time based on supply of the chips.

I'd put my money on driving/ROM misidentifying the unit but you never know. I'd feel better about jumping in if we found out it had 30% better performance than we expect but I won't belive it until I see some real hands on, including in the latest boot camp, tests.

"Sapphire's Radeon HD 2600 PRO ships with frequencies of 700/700/1400, representing overclocked speeds on all fronts. Default-clocked cards call for Radeon HD 2600 PROs to be clocked in at 600MHz core and between 800-1000MHz memory, using either DDR2 or GDDR3."

Fishy to me too... not to hijack the thread but I've been seeing people talking about the X1600 XT being superior to the 2600 Pro... is that true and would this change that?

Yes that seems like the most likely scenario. We'll just need to wait and see if that adom guy can get those benchmarks for us tomorrow. If anyone else has the new iMac that would like to post some, please do. It would help to solve this damn mystery.

I figured it out!

I figured it out! Apple sells iMacs with "2600 Pro" but before long, they will announce the 2600 XT Enabler that you can use to unleash all the power your hardware is capable of. Only $4.99.

This post needs to be resurected

THis needs to be figured out, i feel its important, but I have nothing to add, as I am ignorant to the methodology that should be used to figure it out.

I thought the Pro only had DDR2/GDDR2, it did in most of the review's i've seen, plus apple states the Pro has GDDR3 which i found odd. Somone correct me if i'm wrong
