Do you also experience lag/stutter in iTunes?

I have many times the library you do with zero problems, and have had this library for many years. Since your reported slowness isn't really being reported by others it seems to be an issue with your own files or drive, not a 'bug' in iTunes. Best of luck with it.

Other people have reported lag and stutter issues in this thread and the current poll results have it split 50/50.

A self-selected poll featuring 16 votes (I don't think I even voted) says nothing really. If you have a real problem go to the Apple Support forums but you probably will only find similar outlier problems, not anything endemic to the release itself. But I can tell you that with 36,000 songs in my iTunes library (hmm, I thought it was less!) it's as fast as when I had 360.

Thing is; for me at least, the lag only happened in this view, all other mode don't lag at all:

So it seems some are affected by this bug, some are not. This "arbitrary" isn't uncommon for a bug.

Just to make it clear: I'm talking only about album view, the other categories are fine.

Just a brain fart; could it have something to do with the resolution of the album artwork?

You could try deleting the iTunes Album Artwork Cache Folder in ~/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork; that’s the iTunes folder in the Music folder in your home folder (the one with your user name and the house icon). It doesn't delete the art, only the cache.

Delete the Cache folder, empty the Trash, quit iTunes and relaunch it. You’ll notice that iTunes lags a bit when displaying a lot of content - it has to extract the artwork from the files, and this takes a bit of time. But over time, the cache will be rebuilt, and this can fix some issues with album artwork displaying incorrectly or being slow.

If you often add music or other content to your iTunes library and remove it, I’d recommend deleting this folder from time to time, if only to save space. It will contain cache files for items you’ve deleted, and it can take up a lot of space.

Still, complaining here are making up surveys is suboptimatal. Go to the Apple Forum I linked to for assistance.

I also thought about that. Who knows? I do have some high resolution album arts in the ID3-Tags.

Could be, I often record via QuickTime and save the files as aiff. After converting them to MP3 or AAC I delete the old AIFF Files from iTunes.

I‘ll give it a try later.

Quit iTunes, renamed the cache folder to cache.old and let iTunes start again. Definitely sped up the album view but the unfolding is still laggy, not that it bothers me much. I use the songs view anyway.

That is common. It was better when I tested High Sierra a while ago. However, things are pretty snappy on standard resolution displays. It seems to be an issue with the retina displays.

Deleting cache causes no improvement.
I deleted the entire album art „for fun“ and then album view wasn’t perfect, but a lot smoother.

Same horrible UI lag for me as well, on my 2017 iMac 5k. My 2012 rMBP has no lag whatsoever on the exact same iTunes library. So I think it's affecting iMacs, whether due to resolution or 10 bit color, I don't know.

Edit: When I set the resolution of my iMac to 5120*2880, the lag is much much less. But can't use the computer with that small UI elements obviously.

Same lag on my 2015 rmbp. Only thing that helped a little bit was changing the color profile. I just wrote three reports to Apple but I got no answer.
