Hi

Well I got a a new OSX dvd (well it was a copy and not an original one) I started by just running the bootcamp drivers again and that did not help, so I decided to reinstall Win7 and I still have the problem where every so often the display locks and the I get the message "Display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered"

Am I looking at a hardware problem ???

Hi. I'm having exactly the same problem as the original poster on my iMac 27" i7 with Vista 64 - the screen hangs, then goes black and comes back with a message saying that the display driver crashed. I'm also experiencing yellow dots, pink bars and all sorts of artefacts.

I've uploaded Boot Camp 3.1 which hasn't made a difference and have tried the latest ATI download but this says that my driver is up to date (it's version 8.661.0.0). I'm seeing later drivers mentioned on this thread but the Catalyst installers that are available seem to think 8.661 is the latest. I even uninstalled them and then tried using the Catalyst installer again but doing this no graphics card was picked up and it was only coming up as a generic VGA, until I re-ran Boot Camp 3.1

Does anybody have any ideas what I should try next as it's driving me bonkers :)

Just adding to my previous post, it seems that the problem goes away if I run in 1920 x 1200 in Vista (no need in OSX, it runs absolutely fine in that which is why I'm convinced this is a driver issue and not a hardware issue).

i have not visited these forums for some time and am suprised some people still have problems here is a screen shot of the driver i'm using wich has fixed my issue

Hi there, thank you for replying. I guess my question is - where did you get that version of the driver? I downloaded the latest driver directly from ATI last night and this doesn't update the driver installed for me as Catalyst says that 8.661 is the latest version and so it needs take no action. Very confused by this.

Right well *touch wood* I think I've solved this now by manually installing 8.681 drivers after it turned out that ATI's Catalyst installer just was just saying that the drivers installed were up to date. Now seems to be stable in full resolution. Hopefully :)

Hello,

I've got the same problem mentioned in this thread. However I wasn't really able to find the solution here..

These are my specs:

2.8GHZ QUAD-CORE INTEL CORE I7
8GB 1066MHZ DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB
1TB SERIAL ATA DRIVE
ATI RADEON HD 4850 512MB

I installed Windows 7 using bootcamp. I fixed the black screen problem by deleting the videocard driver using Prompt.

I installed the Bootcamp drivers provided on the OS X cd. Then I installed the newest displaydriver from the ati website.

Now windows seems to be working. But every few minutes the screen flashes black and afterwards I get the following error:
"display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

Also the keyboard and magicmouse don't work.

Can anyone please help?

ATI are flakey graphics chips on Windows (Not sure about Macs). Wish Apple used some decent Nvidia GPUs.

Solution

I had this exact same issue. After using Apple's USB flash drive driver package to get Windows 7 to actually install, the display would freeze repeatedly, often with pink artifacts, and then the driver would stop responding, then recover. In case you haven't managed to fix it yet, let me share my solution with you.

1. Disable Aero effects temporarily (will decrease frequency of crashes).

2. Download ATI Mobility Radeon 48xx Series drivers for your version of Windows 7 32/64-bit (MUST be Mobility Radeon), located at:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

3. Run the EXE and allow it to download the remaining driver package (will be another EXE). Save the package to an accessible location.

4. Run the EXE you just saved. It will unpack into C:\ATI\Support\. Once it's done unpacking, close the Catalyst installer.

5. Pull up Device Manager (found in Control Panel on Windows 7), expand display adapters and right click Radeon 4800. You want to update the driver.

6. Point the driver search wizard to C:\ATI\Support (include subfolders).

7. Once the driver is installed, the version should be something like 8.712.0.0, and you can restore Aero. Problem solved.

If you want to ensure that this problem does not surface on subsequent installations of Windows 7, you can replace the ATI drivers on your USB flash drive with the ones you just downloaded. Delete the old files and drag the new folder over. Keep the unattended installation script in the root.

anyone have help on this issue please, this thread is not being frequented much, so maybe you guys found a fix?? please help

Had exact same issue, pink blocky artifacts and card kept stalling and recovering making effectively making Windows 7 unusable. However, instantly remedied situation by installing a slightly older GPU driver and all issues were resolved and all games run perfectly.

Unfortunately I've just boxed up my iMac as I've got the builders in for the next couple months and I can't recall which driver it was. Best thing to do is look at the ATI card properties and check what driver you are running (likely the bundled driver with BootCamp 3.1 which is Vsn. 8.681 - this also effects the colour depth - note the gradient banding on the standard Windows 7 screen) Now select "Install New Driver" and when it asks where to find the driver ensure you select your computer (don't let it go online to search for the latest). You will now have a list of all the previous drivers that have been downloaded. If you have it try driver version 8.661.0.0 and see how you go - if you're still getting the issues try the version previous to that (this is the on I am currently running but cannot recall it's version number) I have a feeling it has a 4 in it - possibly 8.641.0.0 or 8.461.0.0 or something like that. I'll check at home as I did make a note of it on a notebook but house is in disarray so chances of finding the notepad are slim.

Hope this helps - if people try this solution let us know how you go.

Hey spcdust...thanks for the reply, i think im using the 8.661, i never installed Bootcamp 3.1 because of the issues (banding Ect). All i did was install windows 7 with the SUSB drive in for some driver updates that fixed the "Black Screen" during instalation. Then in Windows i ran the "System Update" which may have replaced the drivers. Games run perfect for some reason, but windows 7 ( when surfing the web or just normal use) does the display reboot very very often). Id love to know what driver you used to fix it...thanks for your help :)

I am not sure if I am too late to respond but this is what worked for my imac that i discovered on another forum (somewhere):

Installed Windows 7 64bit via bootcamp 3.0
run all the drivers from the Mac O/S CD
Update Bootcamp to 3.1 (download and install through Windows)
Rollback the display driver in device manager to 8.661.0.0 (this is the original)

This has been running perfect for me for about 8 hours of use.

Hope this helps.

My system:
imac 27" I7
8gig ram
ATI Radeon HD 4850
1TB hard drive
