I would return it. Apple clearly is clueless to fix this.

Seriously after many months they are either in denial or are clueless.

They are also refusing exchanges now after 3 replacements. They are telling people to live with it or refund it.

They told me I got the best screen apple has lol.

I would just get a full refund as it is just not fit for purpose. You are right, this would be unacceptable on a $500 machine, letting alone one that costs five times as much.

It took Apple several years to admit the last few big repair programmes, like the failing Seagate HDDs from 2006. They still deny that there is anything wrong with these iMacs, so I would just bear in mind that although they might one day decide that they repair these screens out of warranty, but if it doesn't happen, you might end up with an expensive repair job after the warranty period or with a cheap machine that not many people will want to buy.

Updates

The Apple customer relations guy I've been working with is very helpful and sympathetic. After I sent him the picture, he agreed that it wasn't right and stopped suggesting that this sort of thing is normal.

He asked me to verify that the latest firmware patches were installed (which they already were), and then mentioned something about escalating with the engineers as he was under the impression that this issue was fixed...

As an aside, is it even possible to get a screen at a similar resolution without going dual-link DVI? Was looking into my options as far as 27" (< $500) screens go, they all seem to top out at 1920x1080...

Apple = cheap Chinese Junk

True, but not always is it China. Take my Dell Latitude D620 for example. It was made in China by Foxconn, just like Apple's ****. When Apple's Intel notebooks launched, there was an issue with someone applying too much thermal paste. Apple fanboys blamed it on foxconn saying "Thats what happens when an 8 year old makes a computer" Sad, but my Latitude has the correct amount of thermal paste on it. I was impressed on how they applied it correctly. The problem is, the paste is crap, but same goes for Apple. Manufactures use cheap crappy paste that hardens. In fact in the MBP Service manual, it Apple even tells the Genius Bar, and other Authorized Apple Repair Shops to use ONE SYRINGE OF THERMAL PASTE. All Apple needs to do, it keep charging the same premium for their underpowered hardware, and use the money they get from their customers to pay for QC. Apple is the one losing money here, they are repairing these machines and swapping them out. If they had QC, they might be saving money, and their reputation. I have an iPhone 3GS now because I was going onto my 8th iPhone 3G replacement due to uneven glass. Customer Relations said the 3GS had better build quality. They were WRONG! They are wasting money refurbishing those 8 iPhones. I Paid $499 for my 3G. For $499, you would expect a PERFECT iPhone. Funny how all the non Apple iPhones have perfect build quality, but not amazing iPhone OS or 140,000 Apps.

So after waiting an entire month on a repair on my original 27" iMac that was yellowed, Apple decided to break me off a brand new machine, claiming that the issues were resolved.

Serial number: W80072YZ5RU
Name: iMac Intel (mid 2009-i7)
ModelCode: imac_mid_09
CPU speed: 2.8GHz
Screen size: 27 inch
Screen resolution: 2560x1440 pixels
Factory: W8 (Shanghai China)
Production year: 2010
Production week: 07 (February)
Production number: 3433 (within this week)

Look at the attachment and tell me this is acceptable for a $2400 computer...

Don't know what to do at this point - refund, I guess. Good thing I can just bring all my stuff back over to my G5 using Time Machine after migrating to 10.6... What's that? I can't because of the whole intel thing? Great!

Is that yellow at the top also?

Update

So, using the machine over the weekend, it also has a flicker problem... The bottom right corner or right edge flickers for a few seconds at a time, at random intervals... I've already checked, the firmwares are all up to date.

Still waiting to hear back from Apple guy, but I dropped him an email telling him the thing flickers, too...

Why do I feel like I'm beta-testing Apple's hardware???

Thank you for posting this. I am sorry you have had to go through it. I am personally sitting on $2000 + right now waiting for this screen fiasco to end. Why do I get the feeling that Apple is just trying to sweep this under the carpet like it is a small bit o dust? I would like to say that as of this point in time I make $7.50 an hour. I had to sell my Canon Xl2 camera (that took me two years to pay for) and save money from my tax return plus sell games, movies, computer software, etc on Ebay to put the money together to buy this computer. Without a doubt I am REALLY paranoid about this purchase.

Aside from all of the above mentioned money issues, I am the previous owner of a G5 that had a bad logic board. I dominantly do audio recording at home and the fan in that beast was horrible. I didn't buy Apple care because it was not available in FL at the time of my original purchase. So I was stuck with a Mac jet engine for audio recording. I'm about to buy my 4th Mac. I want it to be a memorable experience.
