27" iMac too BIG?

Hey all-

I was wondering if anyone has stepped up to the 27" iMac and actually felt that the screen might be too big for their use.

I currently have a 23" ACD which has always been comfortable to me. I plan on using it as a second display for the iMac. I do not plan on watching movies on the screen other than casual home video editing.

I'm assuming that most instantly get used to the increased size, but looking at it in the Apple store it just seemed HUGE. It's tough to get a sense in the store how it will feel day in and day out.

Of course, if things like eye strain don't really seem to be an issue then the increased screen real estate is always nice.

I'm actually curious about this too, is the 27" too big? Would love to hear some first-hand feedback on the new 27" iMac in everyday usage!
 
I've only used it in the Apple store, but at least there it was way too big for me. I actually had to move my head from side to side in order to view everything. I guess that in your home, you could position the screen at the ideal distance so you can enjoy the size without the trouble.

The size also makes it look a bit bulky IMO. I liked the looks of the 24", but the 27" somehow feels too big for the imac design, giving it an awkward look.

I was considering a 27" imac until using and seeing it in the Apple store, but now I'm leaning towards a mac mini and a seperate monitor, probably 24-25", which is the ideal size for me.
 
I had the same question . . . until I bought one. The screen size is great. It is nice to be able to put up multiple web pages side by side or have two documents, or and combination of other multiple programs, at the same time. Before this could only really be accomplished well using a multi-screen setup.

Unfortunately, my screen suffers from the yellow tinting that sometimes creeps into the iMac screen, but I am hopeful this issue will be resolved shortly. The displays have the ability to be amazingly beautiful and I highly recommend the extra space. Even if the computer side of the iMac becomes outdated, the large screen would be great as a second monitor or even stand-alone monitor.
 
Is 27" to big for games? Not at all. Is 27" to big for video editing? Again, not at all. Is 27" to big for viewing movies? Yet again, not at all.

So it boils down to what you are going to use your computer for.
 
I have it, and no it's really not too big.
Well, it might be to some, but it's fine for me.
I think that for people who are used to working on a small screen, this might be a really big leap and might feel like it's actually too big, but with time, you get used to it.

But personally for me, I think this is the most amazing screen I have ever used. It's seriously amazing in every way, unless you get the yellow tinge.
But yeah, really, I recommend this.
 
I´ve had the iMac 27" for a week now.

Yes, at first it might seem too big but what you got to think of is that you don´t have to see the whole screen at the time like you would normally do when looking at a TV screen.

You only need to see the part of the screen where you´re working. Because of the increased resolution and more screen space it will be the same as watching a smaller screen at the same distance but with an aditional part if you know what I mean. I do, however, find myself using half of the screen when browsing the web. Sometimes I have one window open for the web browser, and msn or other applications beside of it which can be usefull.

The screen is too big to watch movies at a close distance IMO, especially with poor youtube-quality. 27" is best for aplications like Final Cut Studio etc. I´m very happy with the size but you have to adjust to it like I said above. If you don´t really need larger screen space I would probably go with a smaller screen (taking your needs vs the prize difference into cinsideration) even though a 27" has a big WOW factor. With gaming I really don´t know. If you can sit futher away from the screen maybe it´s all good.

So again, the screen is good for providing more screen space but I don´t think I would wish for a larger screen in the future. I´d rather have two monitors then.

Another thing is, I find the zoom function extremely usefull if I for some reason want to sit futher away from the screen. I just hit the ctrl button and scroll the mouse in and out if the text is too small. (It zoomes in the hole screen picture, not only the browser).
 
i had one here from a mate to solve the issues like installing windows for him
first i had to move the desk over a meter away from the wall (sloping roof) so desk in the middle of the room , had to turn my head all the time to see everything , and it was more the annoying , its easier with 2 small screens
as with one huge one , i simply dont like such a big screen , as a tv yes ,but certainly not as a monitor maybe its good for people with visual impairment
so they can work on it with 800x600 resolution , but for now my eyes are ok so no need for a big screen
 
The computer and screen are both terrific.

I love mine.

The only bad thing about it is adjusting to my MBP 15 after using it for an extended period of time.
 
I think its just something you need to get use to, because although the screen is bigger, the text and stuff that it displays can remain the same size, I just see a 27" screen as being more work space. I sold my 24" and looking forward to getting a 27" (haven't gotten one yet, waiting for an i5 refurb or possible refresh ;)). With the extra space I can have more work space for graphic editting or even when I'm just browsing the internet, I can have two full pages running at the same time or a webpage and maybe a video playing on the side and such...
 
I have had my iMac i7 since December and although I had problems that are now cured (Flickering screen.) I love the screen size and the overall speed of the i7!

It pains me to still use my 17" iMac to do work in OS 9 programs that I need to use. It's so slow and the screen is so small. :( :apple:
 
As long as you don't make Firefox full screen, you'll be fine. Otherwise you'll feel like you're watching a tennis match when you read pages.
 
Too big for my taste but obviously it's a matter of personal preference and what kind of work you need it for.
 
I posted this in the other thread as well -- I don't think the screen is too big but I think the resolution is too high. Everything on the screen is way too small, in my opinion. I'm so unhappy with it that I've ordered a refurb 24" LED Cinema from the Apple Store and will be selling my iMac and buying a new system soon. I'm not sure if I'll get a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro. I'm just waiting for the refreshes before deciding.
 
Bought mine last Saturday. The wife went with me. She got to the demo models first and said, "which one are you interested in?" I said, "the 27." She found it while I was looking at something else and yelled, "OMG! This is big!" I started in her direction and before I reached her, I said the same thing. I started calculating how it would fit on my desk, then gave up...no way will it fit. I wanted it anyways, just because I always tend to compromise on a major purchase...as it was, I couldn't go quad since I was on a strict budget. So, I bought it. That's the biggest computer box I ever carried out of a store, and I had a LONG walk that my wife was laughing about, since I decided to park way out instead of trolling the lot for a closer space. I got home, unpacked it at 11PM, and was situated in 20 minutes, after making room for it. The next day, my daughters saw it and were like, "WHOAAAA!" Now I'm having to fight my oldest daughter to get off and go to her own computer.

I don't think it is too big. It's big, but that's a good thing. Up until this point, it was very rare for me to have a browser fully open and still have ample room for another browser or shell window...I can't even do this at work!

About the only thing I don't like about it is that it makes my other monitors look pitiful and washed out.

Right now, I have it on a folding table that I use as a 5' long lab-type desk. I've verified that it will NOT fit in my desk's cubby...not without a fight. I guess it's time for a REAL desk.
 
I'm using a 32" Samsung LCD TV with my Mac Mini. I don't think the 27" would be too big. At the same time, I wish Apple provided a 21.5" option for the quad cores, a 32" and 40" option :p
 
They'res no too big in this world, like they'res no too rich, well maybe a 42" is too big for a computer, but 27" is still ok, i'd say 32" is the max you could take to use every day
 
I gotta say, 27 inches is perfect.

Coming from my 20 inch iMac-- which was a very nice, intimate, screen and form factor-- I feel as though I am looking at a ship's lower-deck portal window with the 20 inch G5 and I'm Kate Winslet looking out at the horizon from the stern of the titanic with the 27 inch iMac.

I'm finally getting that quality desktop-studio experience with the bigger screen.
 
Too Big? Not!

I initially thought that when I moved from a PeeCee w/ a 20" screen to the 27" i7. However, it's nice to be able to run 2 or 3 programs on the screen at one time.

Civ4 also looks real kewl! :cool:
