This is so hilarious. No amount of whinging on an internet forum about what is or isn't included in an Apple product is going to make any difference what so ever.

If the lack of expandability give you the *****, buy a Mac Pro. If the price is too much for you. Suck it up and live with what you got.

Honestly you really expect apple to suddenly change?

If you really wanted to swap the hard drive, nothing is stopping you except for the fact that you may be voiding your warranty and your technical skills.

I'm in the camp that believes if you want a blu-ray player, it belongs under your TV. Why is there a DVD drive in Macs? To install software.

Graphics card? Well, you know what you are buying and that it will never be upgradable. Don't like it? Don't buy it.

stop apologising for apple

going to a store to replace a hdd? what if that apple store is hrs away?
Would be nice if you can pull out the hard drive like the MacPros, just pull out.

+1

This is why I will never consider an iMac while Mac Pros are still being manufactured.
Last week I ordered two 1.5GB HDDs.
Within 5 minutes of their being delivered to my door they were installed and being formatted.

I hate this OCD closed and locked down fetish Apple, Inc have developed.

Yes, that would be a nice option.

Maybe the drawer could be at the bottom along with a RAM drawer.

Currently they have two RAM drawers so maybe there is a lack of space, but it would be a nice way to do it if possible.

2. an actual video card that will be able to handle games at such an insane resolution. Will the ATi 5870 ever be a possibility?

Have you seen the size of the 5870? They're 11 INCHES long, and take up two PCIe slots. Then they need the 75w PCIe power feed, and two external power feeds - in other words, the 5870 power draw can top 270W. That's a rather large amount of power, especially for just the graphics card. Then you have to look at the heat put out under load. There's a reason these high-end GPUs only go in tower cases basically, and not iMacs.

The 4850 is the best mobile card available at the moment. There is no 5850M currently, and NVIDIA haven't launched their GT300 series cards either, with the 250/260/280M cards being quite old now. Basically, Apple couldn't have put a better card in right now.

Changing the Hard Drive is simple. Takes 30 minutes from start to finish. There are several videos on the web showing how to perform this simple task.

I don't doubt this, but I'm almost 100% positive this would immediately void the warranty.

Let me ask again, will an Apple retail store install an HD for you in an iMac without voiding Apple Care?

Thats my view for sure - only argument against is the 'i wanna watch my blu-rays' - but ... that's what i justified my nice shiny >27" telly and >2 channel speakers for :p
