Just got the LED Cinema Display; I've been using it with my MBA. Today I got a kernel panic ("you have to shut down your computer now") while playing a video in QT Player and simultaneously scrolling in Google Maps. Yikes. Has anyone else had kernel panics with the monitor?

i have had a similar kernel panic shutdown while streaming a movie from my server within itunes and tagging some photos using "Places" within aperture (which also uses "Gmaps").

anyway i have not been able to replicate this, and i asure you this is NOT a problem coming from the 27" ACD! when that happened my MBA was not hooked to the ACD,.... must have something todo with Gmaps as i never experienced any problems with any version of QT so far.

as long as those kp's not showing up anymore just enjoy your setup,.... i do enjoy mine :D

Duh. The question is whether other people have had lots of crashes while using a large external monitor and putting more graphics load on the machine.

Had mine hooked up to 27 ACD since november, heavy usage across the board, not one kernel panic.

Can anyone confirm whether this works with the new 13inch macbook airs in terms of the cables reaching because the power, mini display and usb are on opposing sides?

Thanks.

Even on my 11", I've ordered USB and MDP extension cables because the fit is uncomfortably tight and I don't want to wear out the cables (which are hard-attached to the display). So I think you'd definitely want extensions for the 13".

It is a tight fit thats for sure, IMHO extensions are not totally necessary though unless your doing quite a bit of hooking/unhooking as it is a pain in the ass.

No it wasn't. You are now redefining the question. In any event, no it would not cause a kernel panic. Duh.

599 is perfect...I'll check the store for the refurb 24 ACD when is the last time anyone saw one on the refurb store?

Couple weeks ago. They come and go very quickly. I think they have an RSS feed for the rfurb store you can use to keep an eye on it.

Ok, so got my compass stands from ebay yesterday. Yes, they are a knock off, but they are exactly like the real one, they must be made in the same factory and these are made in the "off hours" and repackaged for sale as many other items are. Even comes with the little pouch carrying case.

The only difference is this one doesn't have the 12south logo on it. Highly recommended.

Now putting that issue aside, using this stand with the 13 inch air works, works great. However, one thing to keep in mind, which I almost found out the hard way. Its not the most sturdy setup in the world. If you have kids (like me) or its in the line of fire of being knocked over... beware it can and will fold up if pushed or pulled from certain ways.

I'm thinking of going with the refurb to save 100-150...

Is it too risky? Does it really come like NEW condition?

Great idea. Apple refurbs are excellent. The iMac I bought is a refurb and looks just like the brand new i3 I returned. Paid the price of a base iMac and got the 2000$ version, awesome deal. Everything is packaged the same the only difference is your missing the box, (comes in a white box, similar just no graphics on it).

I find it incredible a company like Apple offers ONE display in ONE size....thats kind of nuts. At least back couple years ago it was 20, 24, 30" ACD sizes...why the heck can't they do that now?

I guess it's all about numbers, the market for their stand alone monitors must be pretty small. Consider that the average consumer (i.e. not anyone on this forum) frequently balks at a monitor priced at $1000 when they can pick up a cheapo TN 24" from Acer for buttons.

Macbook / iMac owners may lean toward one for a second monitor because it matches their machine and they have money to burn, but even the simple purchase of a secondary monitor on either of these is a relative rarity for many people.

Mini users will go for whatever is cheapest and Mac Pro users would often go toward a Eizo or NEC or something, which has a more professional pedigree.

I’d be really interested to see what the sales numbers are for the ACD, but you know bigger screens mean more profit :p

In 2010 $999 for a monitor is pretty darn high. Back when LCD was new, they were all expensive, now you can get a good REAL LCD for 500-600 bucks.

$849 free shipping is better..but to be honest I think a refurb should be $749. That would make sense for a monitor that was sent back and possibly fixed.

actually with the panel that the ACD has, 999$ for a 27" is not that bad

I agree but as someone said very few people want to drop a grand on a monitor. I'm one of those people who does like most of us on here.

However I think we deserve at LEAST 2-3 display size choices. 24", 27", 30".

A company the size and power of Apple should have a selection of at least three. No excuses. It can be the SAME display, but just resize it. Cant tell me Apple cant handle that. They can make 3 different imac.s

I don’t have crashes but my 1.86 SSD MBA comes laggy when using my 24” ACD: playing HD movie via VLC as well as HD youtube.

When not plugged into my ACD, my MBA is not as laggy.
