Datamem has 2 gigs for $168. That's $18 more for product sold by a known seller.

I'd say newegg would be a reputable source and wouldn't jeopardize their name by selling crap. But then again ya never know :D

I'm confused. How is it that apple can charge $300 for a 2GB upgrade from 1GB RAM on the high end 15'' MBP when this way is so much cheaper?

what am I missing here?

People will do it my friend. There are some people who find that "Hey, I'm spending 3k on a lappy, what's an extra $300?" There are also some people that don't necessarily know how to install their own ram even though there are instructions. I can see why people would but I wouln't

I would agree with that statement. I would think the same applies to the harddrive, in many scenarios. However, when I was purchasing my MBP, the $ difference between the 5400RPM and 7200RPM was only $100, so I went with it. Granted, I could have probably found one slightly cheaper, and had 2 drives for the price, I counted that difference as more of a convenience factor, of not having to search, purchase, wait for shipping, and install.

However, I did run with this RAM purchase, and now my MBP is running very smooth with 2G :)

I agree that newegg probably isn't going to sell junk. So I ordered the 2 Gigs the other day. I'll post again in this thread regarding performance as soon as I have something relevant to say. Oh, and as this is my first Mac I'm going to have my buddy @ the apple store do the install for me. (I suppose that means on his own time b/c I don't imagine Applecare covers installation of somebody else's product in their machine). But I do intend to ask.

Yeah newegg is a very, very well known seller. I feel much better ordering from newegg than pretty much anywhere else. Plus I recieve stuff the very next day after I order. I had some problems with a pc motherboard I bought through them almost a year after I bought it and they(newegg) took care of it and gave me a new updated version of that motherboard. Their customer service is second to none.

Is this memory guaranteed Mac-compatible? And what kind of warranty does it come with?

I didn't see a mac compatabile guarantee. However of the 33 reviews the 9 I read for the Macbook and Macbook Pro all gave it 5 out of 5 stars and (according to the reviewers) were used by people who felt highly capable of installing RAM.

As for Warantee, that was $20 / each stick for 2 years of coverage.

do you need a special screwdrive to install the RAM? this could be a deal breaker :p

anyone get only 1 stick and upped their MB to 1.5GB have any thoughts to share about performance?

I ordered the memory for $150... works great.

What pees me off, though, is that when I pulled the lefthand 'spring-lever' to pull out the existing ram, it got dislodged. It is still in there, but it is not grabbing anything anymore.

I yet need to talk to an Apple rep, but I am pretty sure they will blame me for the problem. Anyway, we'll see.

I probably won't want to take the ram out again (2gigs), but it kind of feels cheap when something like this breaks so easily.

I have no doubt that Newegg is reputable. However, they often sell products that are from fly-by-night companies with questionable quality. Newegg also does not guarantee compatibility with any laptop. In addition, Newegg acts as a middle man. If your memory breaks you have to send it back to G.Skill, and god knows if they'll actually honor a warranty. For $30 more you can buy directly from a reputable manufacturer with a known track record who will give a lifetime warranty.

But I believe the DMS with lifetime warranty is $218... which is what stops me from buying it. If I could get the lifetime warranty for just $30 more I wouldn't think twice about it.

I purchased 2 GBs from Omni for my MacBook for around $150 shipped and have had zero problems with it. I was a little hesitant about the company but I took a chance and they came through for me.

I think it's funny that they say they're a "Registered Apple Developer". Just about anyone can register as a developer. All it takes is a trip to Apple.com.

Hey CanadaRAM: I'm a registered apple developer, how about hiring me? ;)

Seriously, people. Why risk buying from companies with an unproven track record just to save a few dollars?

Just go to resellerratings.com and look up the company in question under "Store Ratings".

Received mine today, just installed in wife's MacBook. Seems to be working fine. I did run memtest and everthing tested OK.

Warning: I hope I didn't make a mistake, but my wife had her first crash. Machine wouldn't boot afterward. I had to reseat the RAM and it seems to be fine now, but if it happens again - GSkill is going to feel my wrath :)
