A camera would be nice in some ways I guess but I personally wouldn't really care that much one way or another. It would be interesting though to see if they make some changes to the iPad prior to it's official release. I guess we'll see if your cousin is a good source. ;)

I don't think that after years of R&D and just a few short hours after Apple announces the product and a ship date that Apple decided on a fundamental design change. This would require retooling of the line, a new procurement process and would likely delay it for at least 2 months or more.

I suspect the case and boards are already designed for a camera, to be added in later iteration. They may not have wanted to promote video VOIP initially, (the decision to support voip over 3G was announced after the iPad launch) or they may have had a last minute glitch, or maybe hardware supply issues...who knows?

I noticed that on the leaked picture of the device that were posted the day of the keynote, the support enclosure it was in seemed to have room for a camera at the top : that little round thing in the casing that looked like the home button... I don't know if that means anything to anyone...

Front-facing camera would be kinda nice... I agree with the stability issue that was raised but I would sure appreciate the ability to chat over iChat or Skype with it... and so would my mother (10 000 km away, she qyuckly learned how to use hers !).

For what I gather it would be 2nd gen or 3G model ? And there I was thinking of buying one with wifi to replace my trusty iBook G4 (Roger) who is pretty much dying a little more everyday.

Too late. That have to be well into manufacturing (some may already be in shipping) in order to have them on shelves in 2 months. It's likely that the units shown were actual production units (not prototypes) that were air shipped from China. Shipping from China to US takes almost a month then customs takes a a week or so. This doesn't count China factory to China seaport time or US port to distributor then to stores time either.

They don't ship this stuff on the water. It all goes via air and get's pre-cleared through customs. My iPhone 3GS came straight from China in a consolidated shipment with hundreds of other iPhones. From ship to my door was just a few days.

What? No. Shipping to them is not as slow as shipping to us. They would need 3 weeks max. I HIGHLY doubt they are shipping.

Maybe I'm just naive, but wouldn't it be weird to be shipping things that had not even been approved by the FCC yet? If something were to go bad with that, they'd have a lot of money down the tubes.

Yes the 2nd generation is done and is shipping already (before the 1st generation (It was taking too long) )

I agree with that... you never know how things can turn out...

My guess is that major changes would be made on the software... not the hardware.

AND there is still the question of international agreements for iBooks etc. It would suck to ship it (for example) in Canada (go Canada !) without that feature which is, for me at least, one of the selling point of the device.

:D

And some people say I'm the cynical one :D

I wouldn't be surprised if plans were already in the work for 2nd Gen though...

This is why you guys are always disappointed. Unrealistic expectations and when reality hits, no one is impressed. When has Apple ever introduced a product only to come out with a modified version during launch? Whatever you see during the presentations is what you're going to get in retail version.

Whats next? multitasking?

It's more of a living room device to me.

Like a magazine or book.

Agreed.

I really don't understand why a camera is so important. I've got a camera on my Acer netbook - and I've never used it.

I personally would prefer not to have one on the iPad.

Apple will do with the iPad the same as they did with the iPhone, they're going to release without basic features and add them to newer models. This is how Apple gets users to upgrade and buy AGAIN.

No question the next iPad will have a camera, maybe video chat, possible Flash support, multitasking, etc.

It's a business. You can't launch a device with everything because you won't be able to launch a second version. You hold features back and add them slowly...like every 12 months

this would be in line with the FCC approval delay....i know if i had a huge project ready i wouldent talk about it until the FCC approved it....i think apple has the FCC approval but are awaiting approval on some additions.

who knows....

That's an interesting point ... but as you say, who knows. I wouldn't get my hopes up, although for me even if I thought there was really good evidence I still wouldn't have my hopes up because I really don't care about a camera or whatever else. As is, I'm pretty excited.

sorry but this aint gonna happen. To change the design model and then produce 1M units in 60 days is super hard. Not to mention, it still needs to be tested and go through quality control. They have to be insane to change it now.

I still would like a forward facing camera for video chat.

Why would apple push video chatting so hard, then just give up.

Looks like it isnt going to happen. Front page shows what is supposed to be a camera gap so as people have been saying maybe it was dropped at the last min!
