Well, the story has a happy ending. I went to purchase a MacBook at the local Apple store (Old Orchard) and I received very nice service. I asked to have the machine opened in the store so I could test it before I walked out of there. I ran the disk verification and monitored the temperature for fifteen minutes. This MacBook ran at around 50C with eight or so programs open at once. It never got hotter than 54C. Remember, my first MacBook was in the 70's under a similar load.

It took three tries, but I now have a beautiful machine that seems to work well and be problem free.

Glad things worked out-I also got stuck with a lemon. First the keyboard died after 2 days. Sent back to Apple for repair. 3 days after getting it back, the screen wont turn on at all.
They are going to replace it, but I have to send it to them again. As for exchanging it at the Apple Store, they told me they could not do it because I purchased it thru a reseller, even though it was shipped directly from Apple to me. What BS!-its the same company!
If the new one is a lemon too, they will probably lose a 15 year customer.

That sucks... but I wouldn't swear off Apple so quickly. Other people are having this issue too.
I think that the reseller is causing a bit of a problem with the support and care. Apple may have shipped it directly to you, but they still have to deal with the reseller purchasing it on your behalf. There is probably more behind the scenes than we know.

Clayj,

That is a great idea, but I purchased the unit through Amazon. I don't want to have to go through Applecare/Apple if I can just return it to Amazon. I think I will get a desktop now so as to avoid these problems. I have had three Apple desktops prior to this MacBook and none of them had a single issue.

it doesn't matter where you bought it. you are still entitled to march into an Apple Store and demand a replacement on the spot. returning it to Amazon is not the fastest way to get this situation handled.

So when the Apple store people tell you that no, they cannot give you a replacement for a machine you purchased elsewhere, what do you show them to proof that you are in fact entitled to do this?
