3.1--not what I was looking for

I think I am an odd iphone user....I don't have ANY music on my phone and NO games.
I have Documents to Go, a number of productivity apps, some interesting apps like Molecules, OECD, etc.

So when I see that the operating system is updated I look for better battery life, multi-tasking capability, memory management, etc.

I know most people use their iPhones for entertainment and that if I'm just about productivity I was supposed to have bought a Blackberry, but please Apple, think about us as well.
The iPhone is not just about music and videos!
 
What did you expect with a 3.x update? Significant features will be added in whole number releases. Just expect polish and eye candy until then.
 
I don't consider battery improvements polish. Fair enough, though, things like multi-tasking would be a major update.

I'm just tired of this focus on music and videos.
 
Seriously....you obviously bought the wrong phone. You should be looking at a Windows Mobile phone, perhaps even a Blackberry. Both put MUCH less emphasis on music and video and the like, far more on business oriented applications and procedures. Personally, I have one of each (plus an iPhone) and prefer WinMo, but that's me.
 
Give us back 2.1 or even 1.1.4 performance for 2G iPhone users :(
2G iPhone has been ridiculously slow and not enough ram since 3.0

Is that their strategy to push 2G users to switch?

My experience is the opposite. In the Photos app, 2.0 would bog down with only a few hundred photos and it works better in 3.0. Not to mention my photos don't randomly disappear anymore. My games also stutter less in 3.0.

I agree that they are pushing users to switch though. But they do it by artificial crippling. No 2G MMS for example :(

(Well, it's not like 3G users have MMS yet either :p)

The iPhone has always been described and marketed as a combination iPod and Internet enabled phone. It was never designed to be a business tool. What about iPod doesn't scream music and videos to you? You really bought the wrong device if you were expecting a pocket PC.

If you don't like the new firmware, go back to the old firmware. There is ways of doing it and it's not hard.

Do you have any data that shows the BlackBerry device has better battery life than the iPhone?

I use my iPhone as a business/productivity tool as well as a portable entertainment system. Sure, it would be nice if its battery lasted 10 days without recharging, but I know what to expect from smartphones today. :)

All modern-day operating systems have a way to time-slice the computing resources so multitasking is possible on a single-CPU computer. In fact, the iPhone OS does multitasking. Otherwise, it would be impossible to listen to music while browsing the Internet on Safari. ;)

The thing is, my backups are upgraded to 3.0, which can't be restore back to 2.1

I want to keep my sms and notes.

I wonder manually SSH the SMS and notes folder will work or not.
But I guess the database file has been upgraded..
 
what's so wrong about someone wanting the iphone to better tick the "business use" box? i mean, it has exchange compatibility, it has a cisco vpn client built in... those 2 features alone shout "use me in a business environment" and are a good starting point. neglecting any share of a market as big as the phone market isn't really a good idea. look at RIM, thanks to the iphone they advertise the BB to the regular user and not just business users (see the U2 advert...). apple should be building up the iphone feature list and doing the same but to business users and not just regular users. win win situation.

Given your needs then it sounds like the iPhone isn't the device that best fits your needs. Perhaps you should consider another device.

This is a .1 update, its not a major revision and in fact like most other .1 updates, its primarily a bug fix. Multitasking is a major feature that would require a rewrite of the OS and the UI. Plus as stated that they won't do multitasking because of its impact on battery life.

Speaking of battery life it appears, even though its still early, the battery life has improved. A lot or a little I cannot say but reports seem to indicate its better.

Memory management goes in the bucket of major rewrites

The iPhone is not a blackberry and it never will be and from the sounds of it, you already realized that you should have purchased a blackberry. The iPhone is a consumer device that provides productivity tools but general its geared towards the consumer who wants music, videos and games. btw, there's nothing wrong with that. You just need a phone that better fits your needs.

I'll add that 3.1 did offer business users improvements - they worked on exchange functionality including improving calendar syncing.

True, but first and foremost the iPhone is being marketed as a consumer device, not a business device.

iPhone DID think of people who use the phone other than audio/video devices.

It is quite capable of multitasking and infact does so. It's the power consumption involved with multitasking that had apple deciding to restrict it's use. Has nothing to do with it being only one CPU/ALU/CORE/etc (whichever depending on your hardware knowledge)

I'm not at ALL a bb fan (have one for work and hate it), but to give the devil its due, it does have much better battery life than my 3gs. Part of that is because it has much slower hardware and can't play complex games, but yeah, it has better battery life even ignoring those points.
 
I agree with the OP to a point. While I was not expecting 3.1 to be a big upgrade, I feel that Apple needs to get on the ball and start focusing more on business type upgrades in order to compete with Blackberry than making all these small, entertainment type changes. I believe that Apple would gain a lot more users if they were to make changes to be competitive with BB.

Many people that are not die-hard iphone fans will tell you that the iphone is for entertainment, and the BB is for work/business and IMHO, that should not be so. The iphone should be an all around device if that is what they are going to market it for. Apple has plenty of ipods and the touch for entertainment.

I do have a lot of music on my phone, some games, etc. but my main use of my phone is as a PHONE with other productivity and useful software applications such as organization, documents to go, calendar, calculators, email, contacts, yellow pages, etc. While the iphone DOES fit my needs, for business as well as entertainment now, I would also like to see more upgrades based around business in the future such as the OP mentioned. Battery life, better email, etc. need to be focused on instead of consistently focusing on video recording, ipod features, itunes, photos, games, etc.
I cant imagine ever switching to a BB for multiple reasons, but I really hope that Apple gets on the ball within the next major upgrades before something else better and more comparable to the iphone does come along.

It all started with the acceptance of the fart app. The users swayed the path of the phone. So severe that the iPod touch lost its update path and became a video game device all of a sudden.

Oh, I didn't realize blackberrys, winmo and android phones all have multi core cpus. Oh, thats right, they don't and still multitask. Please, if you're going to make a comment, don't make one that makes you look foolish.
