Sounds great. A detailed how-to for newbies with all the files & instructions would be even better. I've yet to find it anywhere, I keep gathering bits of info here and there. I'll end up writing one myself if my experience is successful... :)

BTW, concerning the 6-pin cable: do I absolutely need to get one at Amazon/Newegg? No chance it's bundled with the card?

AFAIK the bundled cables normally do not fit the motherboard side of Apple's solution, which basically looks like a smaller version of the graphic card plug.

For example my recently purchased Gigabyte 6870 comes with a cable having two Molex connectors (the power connectors on e.g. old PATA/IDE drives) on the "motherboard side"...

Ah, the condescending Google-it injunction. I'm surprised it didn't come sooner.

I've read most of what Google comes up with, and then a bit more. I had a couple of specific questions for which I was hoping to find a polite answer here. But this is evidently the wrong forum for that sort of thing.

I'll try somewhere else, t---k you.

speaking of flashing, my brothers been flashing 6870s for a studio we work in. He has simply been using " Romcreator " to make the new bios and then he uses " Zeus 2.3 " to flash the card. All in osx. He says he turns off all his apps and running processes when he does it. But until now with xfx brands, the cards hes flashed using these 2 softwares are working perfectly fine.

(btw i should really make an account, i keep posting with his.)

anyhow yea those 2 apps did the trick for him in OSX enviroment.

if u have windows, i think the process is : GPU-Z to save the original bios ; then back into osx using Romcreator to make the New rom & theeeen going back into windows to AtiFlash the new bios to the card through dos. Google the instructions , theyre easy it seems and all over google.

really is simple it seems, since all the ground work is done for us all.

after he flashes them , we all have bootscreens n everything. Nothings broken yet.

Do you mind giving me a detailed guide?
I have the XFX 6870 and those two apps but I am not sure where to get the patched rom file. I would be very appreciative if you could walk me through it. I have read on the netkas forums and it seems very scattered and I cannot locate the info I need.

oookay then, ...

u want a backup of your rom. windows gpu-z does that fine.
throw the rom over to osx.
open either zeus 2.3 (the one that works for me after READING one hundred pages in other forums) OR Romcreator (my own brother swears by it).
take your backed up rom and follow the instruction in Zeus or Romcreator to create your new rom in osx.

Then some people manage to flash theyre cards with that new rom, using Zeus (again for some reason 2.3 seems preferred). They turn off all theyre running apps and go for it.

Reboot and voilá , amazing miracle, boot screen.

Personally, I choose to flash my card using ati-flash in dos, simply because thats what im used to and i feel its safer (running processes triggered in an os, leave me to fear an "interuption" during the flash). But seriously, im not gonna write instructions for that. Theyre all over the net. Seriously all over the net. Again ati-winflash & zeus 2.3 are working for alot of people.

In anycase, i have run into situations where i have to force the flash. I do so confident in the fact, that i have a backup of my original rom and my old efi card which i always can fall back to.

Ive also had cases, where i have used someone else efi´ed rom, for the same card (brand&model), that behaved strangely. Could be many, many reasons. Ive also had issues with a rom and reflashed the same rom, to find stability. Why? Dunno... try.

Guys seriously: The Info is Done for you! I mean netkas.org did all the legwork and its all there. I dont know man... there must be 10 guides on how to flash a 6870 on specifically that forum. Here for example, i just pulled the last one posted : http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,692.msg9200.html#msg9200

The thing is when ya keep askin the peeps that make all this possible for us, to rewrite the most basic guides over and over and over again; What you are doing is consuming theyre time, where they could otherwise, be making new great discoveries for us. It comes down to complaining about not being handfed.

Look, its a trial and error process, but the thing is, it really is easy once YOU TRY. Expecting a FULL guide written all over again...and again and again, by every person who mentions "i flashed my card and it works"....Before you even try with the instructions about....is just...well....amateur.

If you are offended by this P L E A S E buy a card done for you by Macvids or get an apple card .... PLEASE! It will save yourself alot of mental pain.

So to "Sum" it up as you "ask" :

Windows - GPU-Z save existing rom.
Send rom to osx (dont care how, mail it yourself if that works)
Open EITHER - Romcreator or Zeus (2.3 seems preferred)
Follow the instructions to make new rom.
Make new rom.
Save new rom to your preferred location.
Preferably somewhere you can find it again.
Save it with a name you can remember like EfiRom.
Now you will be flashing this new rom to your card.
You are presented with 3 paths.
You may only use One of these paths.
Some may not work for you, one will, though all should and have for me.
Zeus (in osx i use 2.3 cuz that worked on my 2 gig card) , Ati-WinFlash (in win) or AtiFlash (in dos).
Which path will you choose and which will bring you to grafical epifany is upto You!

The cards work. They have only 2 issues : Upper DVI port stops working in osx, but every other port does work. (so ya get a hdmi/dvi converter or dp/dvi) -and- they run at 2.5 , getting them to run at 5 is a holy grail discovered only by those who have crusaded it. Ask yourself , do i rrrreally notice the difference or even: " do i even know what that means?" . If you do and its imperative, then Macvids is infact your only solution or ofc an apple card for 3 times more the price.

I use xfx dual fans, because its the most silent ive heard yet. I use the 2 gig version because the 2 games i play in windows actually use more than 1 gig and mostly cuz it says 2 and not 1 ...and cost the same round here. There are aftermarket gpu coolers people install to make them quite. But advising you that makes me cringe.

So, now that ive covered the guilt you´ve managed to make me feel, and ive rewriting Dantes Inferno again... I salute you, abandone this cause & wish you luck in your osx/gpu ventures.

And Now for the Small Print:
Offending me or anyone in that matter; because we dont feel like rewriting an already written book over again, specifically tailored to you, ...is simply proof of your own prententiosness and lazyness. It shows only; that you are used to being served your "knowledge" on a silver platter. In whatever eloquent manner anyone manages to state it, this gains no respect from me.

I posted a pretty detailed guide to flashing the XFX using a DOS boot disk here.

The flash.zip file referenced is included in the very first post in the thread.

Yes to all your questions.

So its come time to upgrade my video card (running an 8800GT right now) in my Mac Pro 1,1. My understanding from snooping around the forums (here, and netkas) is that a 6870 will run straight out of the box (on Lion). However there is no boot screen, no DVD player, and no Steam games. 3 quick questions,

1. Its the Apple DVD player software that doesn't work right? Using VLC will still work?
2. Steam games still work on Windows right?
3. The 1 GB or 2 GB cards both work right? I'm hoping for a 2gb XFX 6870.

Thanks for any help!

Oh, and I can't flash because of the 64 vs 32 bit incompatibility right?

OK, I just to want to confirm. I have a 2006 MacPro 1,1 running 10.6.8.

1. Unflashed 6870 will run out of the box in 10.6.8
2. I won't be able to use Apple DVD player and Steam games
3. "...I can't flash because of the 64 vs 32 bit incompatibility right?" So I couldn't flash the card even if I wanted to?

Thanks.

Wow I haven't been on here in a long time, hopefully this still helps you?

1. Yes, unflashed will work just fine.
2. The DVD player program won't work, but VLC will work just fine. Use Windows for your Steam games.
3. Not sure about whether flashing works or not... can't see any reason to need to?
