3 years standard warranty from Apple (only UK?)

Looks like the Higher Education store in the UK has negotiated a deal with Apple to offer a 3 year warranty for all Apple laptops and desktops. Any similar deals around the world?

Edit: It appears the 3 years warranty is not a free Applecare but very close to it since when I try to purchase a MBP I can upgrade to a Applecare for only £58.75.

Here it is, I have to say it is a really good deal considering the discount for some laptops/desktops are really high, like 15% for the MBP. So now it'll be 15% cheaper and 3 years warranty!

Don't know if this helps, but I am SURE when I was listening to the BBC a few weeks ago that there is now a mandatory 3-year warranty on ALL hard goods bought within the European Union. There was some ?Belgian MEP, a woman, who was making it her purpose in life to point this out to all Europeans. It is an all-encompassing EU directive and overrides any limited (1yr, 90-day or whatever) local warranty. I don't think I have made this up ---

I can confirm this as well. My 20" iSight iMac got a 3-year deal for about £60 back in December 2005 through the ed discount.

I paid full student price for the Apple Care and i could have spent that money on something else. I am going to call Apple and see if i can get a credit back for the difference that i spent.

The student one applies to all students but Higher Education is only for University students/staff only. The HE one offers much higher discounts where as the Student one offers a flat 8% discount. (for example, the HE offers a 15% on the MBP, almost double!). From my understanding, the Student store is operated by Apple themselves but the HE store is run by a separate company (which is why if you went to the Regent Street store you can only get the student discount and not the HE). In regards to your question, you can't purchase the Applecare for £60, the discounted price is only valid when purchased together, and only at the HE store. I am guessing they don't allow you to purchase the Applecare separately for £60 because their agreement with Apple only covers Laptops/Desktops purchased from a certain date.

I was using the HE Apple store - logged in via the university network, and I only purchased 4 days ago! Darn it. Stupid early starting terms. So you dont think I could get the apple care for £60...even tho my mbp hasn't arrived yet?

I would definitely call them on Tuesday, and personally if they refuse to sell it to you for £60 I would cancel my order and order again If your MBP hasn't shipped cancelling should be without a charge I believe. Btw, that is one nicely spec-ed MBP

If this where regulated by the EU, the Swedish EDU stores would have a similar deal. However, we don't seem to be so lucky...

OK - I have checked this out and the period is two years, not three (sorry, my bad). But the basic elements remain the same and can be checked out initally here.

The Directive on Sale of Consumer Goods and Guarantees aims to harmonise those parts of consumer sale contract law that concern legal guarantees (warranties) and, to a lesser extent, commercial guarantees.

Its main element is that the seller has to guarantee the conformity of the goods with the contract for a period of two years after the delivery of the goods. Certain standards exist for assessing when conformity can be assumed and when not.

This applies to all goods sold within the EU and overrides any local warranties (like a company saying they will only guarantee a product for, say, 1 year).

Hmm, well, my mbp (nicely spec-ed out due to the savings of HE discount ) is enroute to me - i had the email saying it had shipped (left the factory, last check it was in shanghai still) - so i'm guessing there probably would be a restock fee....?

I believe you... Just a bit strange that Apple restrict themselves to announce this guarantee improvment on UK edu sites only.
If I understood you correctly, this guarantee should comprise all goods sold in the EU and therefore not exclusive to students nor citizents of the UK.
The behavior of Apple's marketing dept. strike me as a bit odd... If this guarantee is imposed on the them by law, why not use it to their own advantage?

In the USA we get a discount on Apple care if you use your student discount (ours is only a tad bit more expensive in US dollars than its british counterpart).

Some colleges in the US get the three year deal too, I have seen a couple people come in with the three year ApplCare warranty, it surprised me! Usually really big places that do a lot of business with Apple get the special treatment.

Just to clarify this. This is due to a deal between the UK government on behalf of higher education and Apple, which means now that all Higher Education purchases come with 3 years free Applecare.

This deal is not available in the USA or for anything other than UK Higher Education sales.

Yes, but Apple and other unethical companies aren´t updating their warranty policies. They probably want you to buy the overpriced Applecare without telling you that you will get 2 years of warranty without any extra charges.

I´m a very ethical person in general and I cannot tolarate when companies are dishonest with their customers, so I´m going to buy a PC next time and install whatever OS I like, unless Apple turns ethical against their EU customers and tell them they are entitled to 2 year warranty without any extra costs.

I rang apple and they just told me, if i wanted it, with student discount it would be £220 for my mbp - slightly annoying since i ordered 3 or 4 days before they the 3years for HE was announced.
