I personally would (and did) go for the 17" MBP mostly b/c I like to lay in bed and do whatever, I like to take it to other people's houses, travel etc., and I take a programming class where I like to use a mac instead of the PCs at my school.

Othewise, I'd be all over that iMac.

 I'm biased. I <3 the lower end lappy + iMac. I've got the iMac G5 rev. B and an iBook G4. I love having the ease and choice of using a comfortable and gorgeous display/desktop but having a relatively compact and sturdy little laptop for gentle on-the-go computing.

The whole syncing thing has never really bothered me because anything of "importance" is quite likely already on the iMac and anything that might be important work on the iBook would just be simple documents (which I do email to myself), so it all works out. :D

Why do you want two Macs? 15" MBP + 23" LCD, max the RAM, get Applecare.

One other thing to head off arguments - even if you convince me that you need two Macs (not bloodly likely), why on earth would you buy both Macs at the same time? Space out the purchases - buy one 18mos later so it's a more advanced architecture, etc. Then upgrade each one every 3 years. That way you always have a machine (desktop or laptop) that is, on average 0.75 yrs old.

I'm in a similar situation. I've got about that much cash to spend and already have a 12" PB hooked up to a 26" samsung (which i just wall-mounted, and it's really cool cause my desk is a little shaky and the monitor doesn't shake when i'm typing on the keyboard) and this machine is just fine. Problem that i run into is my school is changing its accounting books (my major) and the software only runs on XP. That being true, and not wanting to run VPC, I'm going with the 17" MPB. It will strictly travel to and from school and to and from work. The 17" will be the one I go with because i use Excel FREQUENTLY and the extra screen real estate will be excellent. Since this 12" is somewhat of a desktop solution already, I don't see the need for scrapping this machine and going iMac + MB, especially when i really want the MBP, even though it will have Winblows installed on it :( .

Not trying to steal the thread but I have a similar question. Right now I have a 17 inch 1.67 powerbook. I plan on selling it and get a macbook 2.0 ghz white in a couple of weeks, and then when the Mac Pro's are released buying one of them as well, with a 23 inch screen.

I was just wondering if this would be a good idea.

I do a lot of video editing and it is quite a pain on my powerbook right now and it takes forever, thats why I want a Mac Pro.

I am also in school and want portability, which my 17 inch does not have, so that I can take it to class for notes.

Just wondering if this is in fact a good idea. Thanks
