There is no bug and 3D touch itself is not removed. The issue you guys are experiencing is the fact that haptic touch is now forced onto you. The light touch triggering link previews is due to haptic touch being triggered (and you have no way to turn it off).

They did deprecate a few old APIs (peek and pop) cause they want to streamline 3D touch and haptic touch, which means 3D touch gets nerfed to be effectively on par with haptic touch.

I wish people would stop saying „it‘s broken“ because it‘s not. It‘s an intentional change, a gigantic middle finger to everyone with a (and who loves to use) 3D touch device. Now you know how headphone jack lovers felt when they removed the headphone jack.

It seems to be removed for me running the latest 13.1 beta. For example, there is no such thing as peek and pop. You have to push, lift your finger, and then touch again. That is a sign to me it is gone and is now the haptic variant. What 3D touch feature still exist? I would say it's all haptic now.

The keypad cursor is the only thing I can think of, but I bet that works the same way with haptic only, which again would indicate 3D Touch is gone.

I’ve decided not to update my iPhone X or 6S past 12.4.1 to keep the 3D Touch functionality. This will be the first time I haven’t updated immediately to a new version of iOS...

Likewise...I am sad about missing out on dark mode but I don't want a half-ass 3d touch on my Xs. Will likely go to the Apple store and see how it's been implemented on the 8 after iOS13 is released.

3d touch still works with the keyboard. Next phones of course will need to use the haptic variant, which is to hold on space key. Again, objectively worse than being able to push down anywhere.

3D touch is most definitely NOT gone because 3D touch itself is the hardware functionality of a pressure sensitive display. What you are missing is the peek and pop functionality which was deprecated because it‘s not possible to reproduce via haptic touch. All Apple did was streamline the both variants by nerfing the hardware one to be on par with the software one.

It‘s no bug, it‘s just a pretty vile move by Apple to dumb down a feature set some people „bought into“ (I know people who picked the Xs over the Xr because they love 3D touch).

I guess that is the more correct way of saying it. Obviously 3D Touch is still there because that is a hardware feature, but they are justing making it the same thing that you can do with haptic software.

I feel pretty confident that most people would prefer the larger batteries to 3D Touch though.

People keep saying this as if Apple said they removed 3D Touch for batteries.

While Apple did not come out and say that, when they first introduced 3D Touch the battery took at hit and that was their reasoning why. The battery from the 6 to the 6S actually was smaller to make room for the 3D Touch hardware.

Not really. With 3D Touch, I could instantly press and get a cursor without issue. Now with 13, it’s hit or miss. I need to long press. If I did it like before, I activate the swipe keyboard crap. I end up having to try 3 times before I get a cursor. I’m not an idiot, I know how to work my phone. They’ve really screwed over the people who paid money for features that have now been nerfed. Terrible.

How much space does that hardware take up? Wasn't it mostly just a very slightly thicker screen layer?

What? Really? Apple nerfed 3D Touch to be on par with haptic touch? Absolutely disgraceful. I have the Xʀ and welcome the addition of 3D Touch-like features (for those who will update... I won't), but this isn't getting the attention it should get.
As far as I'm aware, Apple has never crippled an older device THIS intentionally, at least a 64-bit one (32-bit devices were destroyed by iOS updates), but even taking Apple's poor iOS update performance into account, this is too much.

This is an image from the 6S (I think). It actually takes up a fair amount of space.

If we are talking about the Taptic Engine, that seems to be more related to haptic feedback and vibrations and the like. While 3D Touch might certainly be making use of it, like a variety of other features, it seems like it would still be there even without 3D Touch relating to Haptic Touch and other features that make use of haptic feedback and vibration.

It’s a cost cutting feature. Plain and simple. Yet, the phones are still the same price without 3D Touch. Go figure.

Thats's the taptic engine. That's how you get haptic touch.

Everything I have found seem to be pointing to that as the 3D Touch engine. Here is the inside of the regular 6/6+ (pre 3D Touch days). I am sure the new phones have a Taptic engine, but it is much smaller than the 3D Touch version. The teardown of the new phones will confirm.

3D Touch is/was made possible by one of the layers sandwiched behind the screen:

It’s not the “3D touch version.” Apple shrunk the Taptic Engine because they could. The Taptic Engine has nothing to do with enabling 3D Touch. If you think about what the Taptic Engine does, you would see that doesn’t make sense.

I'm disappointed Apple took away a power (pro?) feature in the 2019 iPhones that was probably under utilized by the masses. But I'm pissed off they are reducing functionality in existing devices basically merging the feature with haptic touch so that people buying new phones don't feel shorted. We paid for 3d touch and it should be supported in full though the life of the device.

Wrong!!! Try Seaboard 5d synthesizer app on any 3D Touch vs haptic (xR). The loss of pressure turns this music app from incredible to lame. This is the ONLY reason I bought a XS Max over an XR! Use in music production every day. LAME! Kinda feel like I bought most expensive for the ONLY feature that is now getting killed if I stay up to date :(

Absolutely right: we paid for this advertised feature. This is the ONLY reason I bought a XS Max over the haptic XR

One question: Is the function to access multitasking by pressing harder on the left section gone, too?

Are you sure the music app does no longer utilize the 3D touch functionality? They afaik only deprecated a few APIs but I don‘t think the pressure detection is one of them.
