As far as the OP's question.... I did not get 3G and I am very happy so far. I work from home and don't plan to carry it around with me. I have an iPhone if I need to check email and a GPS for my car. I'm sure when I travel it would come in handy but I have always managed fine with my MBP. I also didn't want to incur an extra monthly expense.

It all depends on how you use it. In my case, I use 3G on my iPhone, as i bring it everywhere and I have Internet when I need it. For my iPad, I mostly use it indoors, and wifi is always available to me so I didn't buy the 3G model, the iPad is also used in my car for music, loved it when iPod is on a huge screen.
My dad uses the 3G as he has no wifi at work.

So it depends on how you use it, I suggest if you don't have wifi then get the 3G model.

You need a computer to connect to the iPad for updates, to add data and to restore it if ever it crashes...at least that is what I thought.

Don't need to add any data to it.

Couldn't be bothered by updates, unless it's critical. At which case, that is easily fixed. You don't need to own a computer to do that, which applies for your 3rd reason too.

Thus, I only have an iPad :)
