every time i see this question i laugh. it shows an obvious fundamental lack of understanding of how 3g and 802.11 work. it's like asking is it faster to walk or drive somewhere.
it's like asking is it faster to walk or drive somewhere.
Maybe not the best analogy. For those of us that live in a urban area there are many times when it is indeed faster to walk than drive b/c of traffic, circuitous routes due to one way streets, or lack of parking.
I didn't ask if it was as fast as Wifi, I simply asked how is the speed from an owner and new user of the actual device.
Is this THAT difficult to answer?![]()

Then what do you mean by "vs" in the title?
I also think a good comparison would be 3G speeds versus mywi tethered wifi speeds. In theory shouldn't they be similar since the mywi is using a 3G connection?
So what your are REALLY asking is:
Is the iPad 3G faster than the iPhone using 3G?
Is that it? Are you looking for actual timing of downloads to compare?
I can't imagine why having larger screen would slow things down at all, given that the processor is faster that the iPhone's.
Really, you have to admit it's a weird question. It if were noticeably slower, you would have already heard rumblings about it. And if it's faster, it probably wouldn't be all that noticeable either since the real limit is the speed of 3G so, again, no one would be talking about it.
Would you like to see various iPad 3G speed tests? Some real world examples (which would of course all be different as well due to local 3G coverage)?
There's really no answer to your question...or at least the question as originally asked.

Yes, very weird. Is he asking:
Is the hardware of iPad 3G faster than the iPad WIFI? Weird. There should be no difference.
Is the data speed on 3G faster than WIFI? Weird. Unless you have very slow WIFI, I would expect 3G is always slower.
Weird!![]()
It really dosen't seem like a very difficult question, I never thought I would have such a difficult time with this. I'll be much simpler about it....
When you are sitting down enjoying your new 3G iPad with a nice cup of coffee at home reading your favorite newspaper site (just an example) On Wifi, normally the pages just pop up nice and quick....unless of course your sitting at Panera in Piscataway, NJ at 6pm on Thursday....then the pages will load in 1 to 2 minutes.
Do you notice when using it on AT&T 3G network that everything just flows nicely, pages open quickly, youtube runs without buffering 10 times on a 2 minute video?
OR!!!!!
is there a bit of slowdown? Does it take a minute or so for a page to load up? Does streaming take a while to load up, does it buffer often?
So simply asking what users' experience on the 3G network performance in real world are weird questions?![]()
asking about 3g performance is fine. but that's not what you asked. you asked how does 3g compare to wifi and they simply can't be compared. for example, at home i get 3g service but i also have 802.11n wifi and a 50Mb internet connection. so comparing these would be pointless.
i'm also glad we already reached 20 posts for a subject that has been covered here and everywhere else ad nauseam![]()
I am asking about the 3G DEVICE PERFORMANCE.....not just the network....simply put.....do you find it to be as fluid as the Wifi device regarding websurfing? please link me to those enormous amounts of posts you mentioned about an ACTUAL USER'S experience using the 3G device in the wild....
Geez![]()
maybe I shouldn't had asked![]()
