I'm sorry if this sounds rude, I don't mean it to be, but if you're not getting crisp shots with the 3gs, you're very possibly doing something wrong. If you have decent light and hold the phone steady, the photos are surprisingly good. Could it be better, of course, it always can, but this camera is very good for a phone.

Very true.

Whenever I read comments from people complaining about the quality of results from even the 3G camera I think they should blame their technique rather than the camera! Pictures on this thread prove my point! :)

I think some of us have higher standards. And different interpretations of 'crisp' as well. I've taken pics of someone on the lawn on a bright and sunny day, and the grass looks like someone ran a watercolor filter over it. My 8 year old, 2.1 megapixel Olympus takes better shots than that.

Yes, it's good - for a phone - I agree with you there. Beats the pants off my old RAZR V3's which was like some sort of an abstract art tool. The 3G's camera is great for a quick snap when you forgot your real camera. But after using it at one family birthday party recently, I've learned that it doesn't even come remotely close to standing in for a real, dedicated camera.

Agreed. The 3GS's camera, while better than the 3G's has some major geometric distortion issues (a little bit to do with the lens, a LOT to do with some wacky image processing), and terrible sharpness.

The Pre's camera is much better.

But I do agree that a flash (and some software settings like a white balance) would be the most important improvement that could be made.

I think lack of clarity(ie. sharpness) is major issue. It gets the colour and white balance okay but compare to my old N73, it does not have that clarity even in the focussed area... I am pretty sure Apple can fix this softwarely even if that means hiking up the sharpness a bit.

lack of sharpness also ruins the night photo as well to an extent.
